AWS Keynote round up (youtu.be)

Hi folks, this time it’s time to look at the announcements from Adam Selipskys #Keynote at #AWS #reinvent 2023. I’ve broken this down into a couple of videos to make it easier to digest which I’ll release throughout the day and I can say with certainty watching my summaries will save you a bunch of time in rewatching the...

This sounds extreamly corporate. Aws Community Radio sounds like it’s made by AWS, which would explain why it sounds so cringe to listen to.

They can’t because Googles empire is built on bait and switch tactics, and if the product is open source, nobody can bait and switch it.

Open source actually guarantees that all shitty behaviors from big tech doesn’t work at all.

That was the thing about old games, they weren’t worried about being difficult sometimes. Gamers were happy to get a challenge.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah I was never into arcade games as a kid. I realized right away that they were made to be difficult for that reason, so it felt like they were not worth it.

But games at home, at my commodore 64 or Amiga, were often difficult too. There was often no tutorials even. You just started playing and figured things out. I remember feeling like I had all the time in the world back then. As an adult, I often feel my time is limited and I should be doing something useful with it.

Yeah the best manual I ever read was for en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunship_(video_game), it was amazing. A thick manual explaining so much about the military helicopter and how it worked. Was thrilling to read as a kid.

I don’t remember the graphics being so bad though…:) But it’s pretty shit by today’s standards.

Grinding must feel like fun, otherwise it’s just bad game design. If you don’t feel rewarded for it, it’s specially bad.

I think blizzard have actually lost the ability to make fun games, because they don’t love games anymore. They are in this for the money.

It kind of has a value, because so many people don’t realize how fast it goes.

They say things like AI will never be better than humans at this and that, etc. I have no idea how they are even thinking. AI will become the primary interface to all technology.

You will talk to AIs constantly in just a few years. When you order a burger, when you search the web, when you ask for help online because you feel sad.

I agree about NMS, I can’t bring myself to try it again. The original feeling that everything is the same is still with me, even after reading reviews of updates.

Neovim is better in many ways, and because it has lua support, it’s so much easier to write plugins for it. So there are thousands of plugins right now, and entire neovim distributions that are configured to work like an IDE, like Lazyvim for example.

www.lazyvim.org

I’m a huge fan and I have written plugins myself since it’s easy and rewarding.

But on the server, I don’t bother installing neovim. Ordinary vim is fine for simple editing tasks. But if you want a customized experience to replace VS Code on your computer, you want neovim and not vim.

Good thing there are hundreds of other instances. This a solved problem with Lemmy.

No need to even complain about it. You have choice here.

The largest instances are going to be like reddit, yes.

Yeah it’s getting better with Nvidia but you should try it with an amd card. Absolutely stunning.

Yes but it’s relative. I have 800 users right here that doesn’t use any of that stuff. Just saying it’s not really a block for 99% of users because all they do is surf the web and play games.

Don’t forget they want to introduce things like WEI to lock down what devices and plugins you can even use on your own computer. That’s what Google stands for.

Why is everything in consumer / American life so fucking shitty now - and companies literally just say 'oh bc profit margins' and we're now expected to swallow that and sympathize?

like I went to taco bell and they didn’t even have napkins out. they had the other stuff just no napkins, I assume because some fucking ghoul noticed people liked taking them for their cars so now we just don’t get napkins! so they can save $100 per quarter rather than provide the barest minimum quality of life features.

The guy posts in Swedish here for some reason.

But yeah, the Black Friday thing in Sweden is a joke. It’s being used as a way to get rid of old models of televisions and other stuff that nobody really should buy. Any discount on things that are new is very minor, or as in this case in the picture, even more expensive on Black Friday.

The list is generally correct but these days, systemd has made quite an impact also. If a distribution uses systemd, it has one software to handle everything from booting (instead of grub), handling start and status of all system services etc. Its probably the largest change to the Linux ecosystem in a long time.

X11 and Wayland are desktop protocols, so things like desktop environments and window managers depends on one or them to be installed. Without them, you don’t get any graphics except for the console. It’s all built on top of one of those.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Right? :)

Do guys that tip cam models hundreds of dollars week after week think that model actually likes them?

I understand a fantasy and a one time thing like tipping on a guys night out at a strip club, but some of these guys think they are in a relationship with someone they will never meet and don’t even know their real name or life details.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Imagine being a girl like that, and you get told you are beautiful and sexy, and you get paid money for just existing.

I can see how the girls can enjoy that a lot, and they probably like some of the clients also. But the guys will never know for sure, since it’s in her interest to make it appear she likes everyone.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I would not feel good about myself in that situation but I guess I understand…

For me it’s a slightly disgusting to pay money to another human being for fake attention, it’s very superficial and animal-like. But I can see how it can make some guys happy.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Fair enough. I agree that the job must be difficult, but there are probably some guys that the girl actually likes. But probably she hates most of them.

Everyone’s parents suck, and today’s kids will fuck up their kids also. It’s almost unavoidable as part of the separation process, where kids will try to be as different from their parents as possible.

This causes conflicts and parents reacting in “wrong” ways to their kids being morons. :)

They pay good salaries to grab people who could otherwise create something worthwhile. Now they do shit for Google, like ads.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It’s maybe hard to realize but these moderators wants an environment where their users never see an uncomfortable opinion that upsets their users.

As an adult, I don’t have a problem with different opinions, but my teenage son has massive issues with it. He wants to go to war with people over opinions, and if they don’t agree with him, they are stupid. So I think it’s a maturity thing.

Sooner or later, you realize that people have different opinions, and censoring them doesn’t make them go away. The ability to discuss different opinions is what makes someone mature.

Anyway, I can absolutely understand why they don’t want to moderate difficult discussions. That’s a lot of work.

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Things are more interesting in the Linux world. Plasma is just a user interface, a desktop environment. The actual operating system is Linux. And we have so many choices for how we want our desktop environment on Linux, but Plasma is the most advanced one.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah it depends a lot on the hardware. I have one laptop with Linux that is wonky sometimes because it has Nvidia graphics. But my stationary with amd is awesome, always works 100%.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I think it’s unavoidable that humans won’t have enough work in the future since more and more stuff get automated.

I also think the evil people at the top knows this and are no strangers to starting wars to get rid of millions of people, when there is no capitalistic benefit for them to exist.

1984 , (edited )
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah but my point is, more people may not mean more profits in the future. Depends on what can be automated.

So basically im saying there are two ways to increase profits, either reduce costs (salaries) or increase sales. It’s possible that in the future, the equation becomes that it’s possible to reduce costs very very much by reducing employees to almost nothing, but someone needs to buy the products for it to be a profit, I agree.

It just seems so primitive what we are doing now. We should build societies where humans are happy, but capitalism is the opposite, and other systems seem to suck also.

Those star trek societies are only possible because they can generate items from thin air…

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah it makes sense. They want to protect what they have built now, all based on interest rates and everyone borrowing money they have to pay back their entire lives by working.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

No they are just not as horny at that age. I read that woman are the horniest in their 30s and guys in their 20s, and it kind of matches my own experience.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah maybe. I’m a guy but I would be pissed too if some female made a completely ridiculous theory about men being a certain way. And they sometimes do. :)

I understand the emotional reaction to this, and yeah, could be correct, but I doubt it myself.
