So I’m reassessing my entertainment center since seeing the Video Game History Foundation’s report. Since the study it’s got me thinking, if you could pick any 4 consoles to have hooked up to your TV (4 becuase I’ve got 4 inputs to my TV) which would you pick and why? I will accept modded consoles as answers too.
I wouldn’t buy any consoles, I would build (though you can buy) a really powerful gaming PC to plug up to my 4k TV. I’ve actually recently done just that and it works amazingly well.
Things to make it a good experience:
Make sure you have a 4k TV with HDMI 2.1 for 120hz gaming
Configure Windows to bypass the login screen on boot
Configure Steam to launch in Big Picture mode on startup
Buy an Xbox Controller and the little dongle for it (it works better than just bluetooth)
Buy a small wireless keyboard with built in trackpad for the odd occasion you need to use a mouse and keyboard (looking at you EA Play).
With that, you’ve got the best console ever. Huge backlog of games, games on steep discounts, a machine that has a much better experience outputting to a 4k TV than something like a Steamdeck or a console. I’ve tried the Steamdeck to a 4k TV and the quality was pretty awful; 720p does not upscale to 4k well at all. And if you wanted to, you could set it up with emulators using retroarch for any games you are missing.
My TVPC specs:
Ryzen 7800x
32GB DDR5-6000
2TB NVME SSD
RTX 4080
Fractal Design Torrent Nano
I picked that case specifically for the huge 180mm fan in the front, the fact it can fit a massive cooler like the Peerless Assassin and the GPU gets fresh air from the bottom. It’s not the smallest case, but it stays cool and super quiet.
Netflix is forgetting that a large part of their success was due to being more convenient than piracy.
Oddly, I have noticed that most people I know aren't interested in taking the minimal risk to sail the seas now that there's widespread cause.
Back when Netflix was awesome, I knew a LOT more people who were willing to dive in to the technical stuff, risk, and additional effort to strap on an eye patch.
Anyone's guess on the root cause, but I feel like the amount of people on the interwebs now have absolutely no idea (or interest) how anything works. "Push colorful button to do things" seems to be it.
Volla Phone X23 comes in two platform options. The brand’s own Volla OS & Ubuntu Touch, you can easily switch between operating systems using the multi-boot function.
An 18-year-old from suburban Denver who allegedly planned to go to Iraq to fight for the Islamic State group was arrested last week as he tried to board a flight to Turkey.
This is getting so stupid, it’s beginning to sound like The Onion. Why don’t they just start charging for reading posts.
Here’s an idea: Every day you get 5 Reddit Emeralds for free, and you can use them to read 5 posts. If you want to read more, you can get more emeralds from Common Reddit Loot Boxes. You can buy those boxes with Reddit Rubies.
You can get Reddit rubies from Rare Reddit Loot Boxes, and in order to get those, you have to use Reddit Diamonds. If you have 19 Common boxes you can also craft 1 Rare Loot Box. Doing so will also require 10 rubies.
You can also buy Reddit Diamonds with Superior Crypto-Augmented Money (SCAM), and getting those coins requires real world money.
Ok, so now that you have all these gems, you can put them to good use. Emeralds are used to read posts. When you comment, there’s a 50% chance that it will be deleted within 30 minutes, but you can improve your odds by spending 1 Reddit Ruby. For each Ruby, the odds improve by 10%. Posts have the same mechanism, but you need to spend Diamonds instead.
Not the summer sale but the Steam fest, I played House Flipper 2 demo, I really enjoyed it and it turned out it was the most played one.
House Flipper is a sort of simulator, the purpose of the game is to buy houses in horrible conditions, renovate them and resell them, there’s something oddly satisfying in it, I love it :D
Asking about why the kernel needs to support secure boot on an individual system where I am not concerned about the hole punched by the nvidia kernel module. I’m concerned about the proprietary boot loader firmware that will never be maintained well. I’m not asking if it is a good idea in general or for most people....
Odd, pretty sure I ran Fedora with my Nvidia 3090 just fine with secure boot. Currently running Arch Linux with the exactly same 3090 using self-signed secure boot certs. I didn’t have to sign the Nvidia kernel modules, just the kernel image and the bootloader.
I don’t really see how Trump would be found guilty of anything that happened on that day. Pretty sure the only things he said mentioning the events were for people to be peaceful and respect the law enforcement officials in a few tweets. That’s all I’ve seen from either side in terms of his “inciting an insurrection” - have I missed something?
The indictments are clearly politically motivated. That’s an issue in itself. He is absolutely no doubt guilty of a lot of crimes, but I don’t think this one is going to stick unless there’s some more evidence that I’ve missed but that the people wanting him in jail haven’t shared for some odd reason.
Hmm that’s odd. That’s kind of the opposite of what I believed. My fingers are oily and can operate the sensor great. I even saw a website suggesting that if you have trouble with the sensor, to run your finger on the outside of your nose to get it oily to activate the sensor.
I’ve ended up with a number of machines on my network, and a need to name them all in a somewhat logical way. For several years I had them named after the planets, which worked well until the PCs for myself, my girlfriend, servers and Raspberry Pi’s quickly summed up to more than the eight planets. I’ve broadened it...
Ungulates. Because who doesn’t like a hoofed animal?
My client machines are even-toed ungulates (order Artiodactyla) and my servers/IoT machines are odd-toed (order Perissodactyla). I’m typing this on Gazelle. My router is called Quagga, both after the extinct zebra subspecies and the routing protocol software (I don’t use it any more but hey, it’s a router).
Biological taxonomy is a great source of a huge number of systematic (and colloquial) names.
It doesn’t quite say that, but I think the meaning is essentially the same: “Don’t choose a name after a project unique to that machine.” - RFC 1178
For my homelab, I think that’s fine to do. I’m unlikely to have multiple Plex servers locally, for example, and if so, numerically naming them is fine - I provision with Ansible, and if I’m at the point where I’m having sequentially numbered hosts, they’ll be configured as cattle anyway. Also, having the names reflect the services a host provides makes it easier to match in my playbooks.
I think it’s a better scheme than turning to mythology, fiction, or animal species, which oddly enough RFC 1178 does encourage you to do.
To be fair, I have seen many people confused by git (in fact, there is a relevant xkcd). So for you and anyone else that could use some help:
Git is just a version tracker. It is basically like naming a files “project_1”, “project_2”, “project_final”, etc. It just does the hard work of remembering history for you, and only shows you the current version.
The commands are somewhat oddly named, but are fairly intuitive:
git add - adds some of the current changes to the tracker (“stages” them).
git commit - commits (i.e. saves) the currently staged changes to a new point in your history (a ‘commit’)
git checkout - check out, as in take a look at, another branch
And you shouldn’t think about pushing and pulling as a tree; think about it as an action you take. You either pull changes in from the server or you push them up to the server.
For more complex situations, you will need to use more complex functionality. Git is built to help manage changes when working on a team, so it has the concept of creating new branches of history - like an alternate timeline - so that each individual can work on their code as if they were working alone. When they are ready to send their changes to the main (or master) version, they can merge the changes in. In the event that you want to change history, there is git amend and git rebase.
The normal work flow goes like this:
git checkout -b new-feature: check out a new brach, based on the one you are on now
make some changes
git add file.txt (or -A for all): add your changes to tracking
git commit: save the changes to a new commit (a new point in history). This will try to open an editor so you can write a short message explaining the changes; you can use -m “message” to specify a message from the command line if you prefer.
repeat until you are done working
git push: send your changes to the remote server (add –set-upstream origin new-feature if this is the first time for this branch)
open a pull request or something similar so someone else on the team can review and approve your code
merge the pull request in
If your changes fall behind the main branch, you will need to update your branch before merging it in. First, checkout the main branch and pull the new changes. Then, checkout your branch and add the changes from main. There are two ways of doing this:
git merge main - merge the changes you are missing from main, creating a new point in history for the combined changes
git rebase main - change history so that it is as if your changes started from where main is now - change the base of your branch to be the current state of main.
If there are conflicts, stay calm and take a look at your files. You should see something like this (from here:
<pre style="background-color:#ffffff;">
<span style="color:#323232;">here is some content not affected by the conflict
</span><span style="color:#323232;"><<<<<<< main
</span><span style="color:#323232;">this is conflicted text from main
</span><span style="color:#323232;">=======
</span><span style="color:#323232;">this is conflicted text from feature branch
</span><span style="color:#323232;">>>>>>>> feature branch
</span>
You need to edit the file to decide which of main’s code and which of your branch’s code to use. Once you are done, run:
git commit: if you are doing the merge method
git rebase --continue: if you are rebasing. A rebase resolves conflicts one commit at a time, so you might be editing code from previous commits, and you might need to repeat this process for the rest of your commits until you get back up to now.
Another tip: if git complains about uncommited changes, or if you just want to save all of your changes somewhere and go back to a clean slate, you can use git stash. This will create a local stash of your current changes, and allow you to get them back later with git stash apply or git stash pop.
And you aren’t expected to remember it all. That’s what man git, Google, and websites like git.wtf are for. Or, you can call that one friend who understands it, and ask them for help ;)
I love javascript and how loosey goosey it is, I must be the odd one out. Then again my apps tend to be database driven so it’s mostly just a UI and very thin API layer.
Thanks for sharing, I see what you mean about it feeling like something you have wanted to say.
A section I liked is
And I also understand that we are the generation who has to go through this part of it. We’re the ones born in time to be forced to make the rules and defend them. To say hey maybe one guy shouldn’t be able to own the village square. Because it was never remotely possible before. It’s all new and we have to figure it out. To agitate and legislate and be constantly vigilant. Maybe it’ll all seem so obvious and settled in 50 years, but those are our 50 years and no one else is going to have to be the first to have these conversations and try to make policy out of them. That’s us, it’s our lot, and it sucks ass, but this technology is the singularity we geeks have been talking about, and it turns out it’s not just impossible to imagine life on the other side of it before it happens, but it’s really fucking hard to figure out life on the other side of it once you get there, too.
Lately I’ve been feeling a sense of dull but oddly optimistic sense of resignation about the fate of internet and privacy and all the AI bullshit, and I think this paragraph captures that feeling.
The odd thing about this is that because Linux generally doesn’t come preinstalled (though some sellers do have it), I’ve found the Linux installation process is usually smoother and easier than installing Windows.
I realize it’s extra work, though, which is a barrier for some. Worrying about screwing up their new computer and voiding the warranty is certainly a deterrent.
Stop suggesting humans are the only factor. The fact you can’t accept that there are possibly other factors in play tells me you are also not a “climate scientist”. Something I never claimed to be, nor a chemist, so that’s a bit odd eh?
Teachers will be forced to tell parents that their child is questioning their gender even if the young person objects under new guidance for schools in England, the equalities minister has indicated.
What a nonsense, meaningless reply. This sounds like a response from someone who lacks critical thinking skills and doesn’t understand the difference between behavior and identity.
Parents are forced to send their kids to government agents at the threat of taking the kids away. The least they can do is being transparent with my kids behavior, if little jimmy wants everyone to call him Laquisha, that falls under behavior.
This makes you sound unhinged. Who is ‘they’ and when did ‘they’ tell you to shut up?
What’s unhinged about it? My local school boards.
Yes, and that’s completely irrelevant to the discussion.
No it’s not, teachers have been expected to let parents know what their kids are up to and how they’re doing socially, emotionally and with their studies. The fact you are trying to have teachers keep these things from parents is more telling about you.
Parent teacher conferences don’t consist of the teacher listing the race, religion or ethnicity of the students I/my child hang out with, nor is there a specific mandate for them to do so.
You made up this scenario and are arguing against it. That’s weird.
Are they? Or maybe they’re just minding their own business when it comes to matters that don’t involve education or risky/harmful behavior.
If a kid has cancer should the nurses not tell the parents? Is transitioning not a very hard emotionally and mentally situation to be in? pre-transition, the suicide rate attempt is over 40%, how would you feel if your kid attempted suicide and you couldn’t help because the teacher kept it a secret?
Why would anyone in their right mind want to work with someone who refers to them as a “servant”
LOL, I say public servant, and the fact you try to pervert my argument and equate it with ‘servant’ is dishonest and disgusting. Every individual employed by the government is supposed to serve the tax payers.
You complain about ‘forced government institutions’ yet in the next breath demand they be the sole conduit into your child’s life.
I didn’t complain it’s a forced government institution, I said what it was. I don’t demand I be the sole conduit, I demand that the teachers tell me what my kids are up to during their forced institutionalization. I know it may be odd that someone paying for the school, paying for the new gym, property taxes teachers salaries and their supplies might want to know how my kids are doing, but I think the governments job should always include transparency to those that they are serving.
What do any of these things have to do with a person determining their own identity just as every other autonomous human has done for millennia?
You said that kids have autonomy. 13 year olds should be able to buy cigarettes, booze, get tattoos, right? Is there a reason we don’t allow them to?

If they were just odd they’d have a lot more success because you kind of have to be odd to be good at CS.
It’s more the rapey, incely, tendency to see women as a different and incoherent species that has the women in CS either walking around with their hackles raised all the time or quietly slipping out the back door.
