I get a lot of visual artifacts when first opening Chromium on Pop!_OS with a 12th gen intel Framework laptop. Relatedly, odd black outlines will appear around different elements around the OS occasionally. I believe I’m on the most recent drivers and such, is there some other configuration necessary to fix this bit of cruft?

You know what, if they had P+ ready to go in the UK in 2015 when Dis began I’d have probably signed up and still been so. But since then they’ve pissed us about so much. Dis was on Netflix, when Picard went to Amazon, then Lower Decks went to Amazon six months odd after it finished in the US so I’d already had to torrent it, then Dis got pulled from Netflix at the eleventh hour just before series 3 began, a week after they had told people it would be on there at a London Trek Con, but as P+ still hadn’t launched the only way to watch it was on an obscure Freeview digital channel. Now this with Lower Decks.
Not to mention times are much harder now financially for everyone so adding another monthly cost is a much bigger burden. Especially for one franchise, as least Disney brought Marvel, Star Wars and Fox to fill out D+ before it launched.
Given the psychological effect of owning a gun, or having access to one has on a person, I honestly feel like we’re in the same mental health territory as any behavioral antagonist, like leaving an addictive substance around an addict. You take a gun and put everything it means in a person’s hands - the power, the mythology, the kind of baggage it comes with in this country - and it’s gonna have some kind of effect.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve witnessed, and am aware of many cases where drivers of certain kinds of cars - big, fast, whatever - do stupid, reckless, dangerous, even murderous things because of the feeling of power and control their vehicle gives them. It’s the psychology of the damn things that makes people crazy.
We have a phrase for it, oddly enough: “it’s like leaving a loaded gun on the table”
I posted the other day that you can clean up your object storage from CSAM using my AI-based tool. Many people expressed the wish to use it on their local file storage-based pict-rs. So I’ve just extended its functionality to allow exactly that....
Yes. odd how people think sharing CSAM is why people would post here, instead of actually tracking down and prosecuting those sharing CSAM. Details about the users who sharedl CSAM content, such as timestamps - would help identify the offenders for prosecution.

Farquhar’s views on remote work put him at odds with other major tech CEOs, who are increasingly trying to get employees back to the office at least part of the time.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told employees in an internal meeting this month that fully remote workers likely would not have a future at the company, reports Insider.
Many tech companies that once praised remote work are now trying to get people to the office, citing improved collaboration and productivity.
Even Zoom, whose videoconferencing software helped power the pivot to remote work, is trying to get its employees back to the office at least twice a week.
Founder and CEO Eric Yuan told Zoom employees that it was tough to build trust remotely, Insider reported earlier this month.

A proposal from the Labor Department would make an estimated 3.6 million salaried workers newly eligible for overtime pay. It covers workers earning less than $55,000 per year.
I'm probably well in the minority here but I'm curious how true that statement is across the board. Or maybe I just work for a great team, lol. I rarely put in more than about 30-35 a week with exceptions of crunch-time deadlines. I do pull some odd hours because we have a team in India but can just take comp time later in the day or week to offset that. I'm paid (by most standards I know) quite well too.
That said, this is great for the folks that will benefit! I really hope this helps push for a larger reform. Far too many people are getting screwed over by shit jobs, shit hours, shit pay, shit benefits, etc...

It depends on how deep you wish to go down the hole.
For me, and especially now that Netflix is ending their DVD service, if I can’t find something old via torrent, I’ll find it on DVD on Amazon, used for as cheap as possible. Then, rip it, and sell it back on Amazon used. Odds are, whoever is buying it from me is doing the same thing I just did.
Ah, this got a good writeup by news piece. I first learned about this from Medlife Crisis’s The Epidemic of Fake Disease. Statistics about anything as big as cancer diagnoses are beyond complex, and honestly it would take a gargantuan effort of science communication to get this out to the general public. It’s… sobering to know that mortality is not morbidity and that harsh side effects create the most important optimization problems of patients’ lives. I hope that if (or maybe when) I get confronted with a similar diagnosis, I can face the numbers and the odds with as much of a level head as possible.
Say you list a table lamp on your website at $100, tax included. Well, if you sell that table lamp to a buyer in Connecticut (where the tax rate is a flat 6.35%) then you’re required to remit $6.35 in sales tax to the state of Connecticut on that transaction.
But if you sell the same table lamp to a buyer in Aberdeen, Washington, where the sales tax rate is 9.08%, then you’d be required to remit $9.08 in sales tax to the state of Washington.
As you can see, you are cutting into your profit margin by including tax in your pricing.
Further, US customers are accustomed to paying their local sales tax rates. We’re so accustomed to paying odd amounts in sales tax that paying a flat rate might surprise us or leave us a little confused.
This is anti-consumer bullshit nonsense. All they did was hid their only real “con” behind a wall of text. “As you can see, you are cutting into your profit margin by including sales tax”
And the last paragraph is fucking stupid too. People are too used to seeing numbers, so other numbers will confuse them!
odds are greater you’ll just have to live and suffer through the heatwaves, droughts, freezes and cyclones instead, not to mention the super fun collapse of society
Seems an odd question. Since I’m not sure what you’re getting at, my answer might or might not be of value.
The only thing I know offhand about the breakdown is 60% of the total lifetime cost of electricity is in construction costs, a number that is disgustingly through the roof and why using nuclear power for the whole world is unfeasible. It’s that bad.
The rest is “day to day costs” which are far lower with nuclear than other forms of energy. Which would be great if it didn’t cost so much to build a nuclear plant.

I get that for older gay people in English-speaking countries and i appreciate that you shared this. My perspective on this is rather different, as i’m from Germany and completely out-of-date English slurs are obviously not something people here normally have a personal trauma from. On this side of the North Sea, the people who take objection to the term queer are mainly assimilationists who don’t want to be lumped in with anybody who is too flamboyant, loud and gender-nonconforming for their straight friends and business partners, or they’re outright terfs who love to make up stuff about how lesbianism is erased by the queer agenda (ofc most of the time these aren’t even lesbians, and if you see them at a counterprotest to a Dyke* March, odds are they are paid to be there by one of the European fronts for the Heritage Foundation). So i’m not used to needing to pay attention to who i piss off with the term, because my experience is that it reliably pisses off people i want to piss off.

This is one of the many things that Strange New Worlds (and Lower Decks as well) have got right. Space battles in SNW are beautifully animated, but they aren’t overwhelmed with excess visual spectacles and they tend to be fundamentally simple: you shoot at us, we shoot back or try to find some helpful obstruction to hide behind, etc.
Even Prodigy’s big space battle in their finale manages the task to some degree, despite it’s scale. I remember watching it felt oddly sluggish, as the ratio of ships on screen to weapons being fired was surprisingly low, but it definitely made it easier to keep track of whatever specific event the camera was focussed on.

Wait. How is it not politics when it has to do with governments? Is there some kind of language barrier going on with the the term “politics”?
Yeah I didn’t think it was weird either. But I don’t appreciate sharing with people to have them throw it in my face.
To some, it would sort of be like saying I don’t care what isis is doing or that girls in the middle east can’t go to school and honor killings are a thing in some places, cuz that’s politics.
so that’s politics but not the tankie stuff that has to do with governments? This is the part that is like, really odd to me.
or you keep your ammo in the same place as your weapon, …Isn’t that the entire point of having a firearm if you intend to use it to defend your life?
Sure, that’s the big contradiction n trying to keep a firearm for self-defense. If it’s readily accessible, odds are more likely someone will be shot on accident or a moment of emotion, than that you’ll defend yourself. If it’s locked up, with the ammo elsewhere, you’re following best practices to keep your family and friends, and yourself safe, but then can’t use it to defend yourself
