Musk's internal monologue: "I shall walk imperially through the halls of power for this photo, like an 18th century duke, and then I shall cast my gaze upon you, little photo-person. Do not weep in the presence of my greatness but love me... from a distance."
"Would you believe that the entire ebook marketplace – including Kindle, iBooks, and thousands of ebook stores – depends on the volunteer work of about a dozen people?"
What I'm really trying to puzzle out is how these texts compare to older and still widely available Armenian works like Grigor of Narek's Book of Lamentations (Մատեան ողբերգութեան, c. 1000 CE). Initially, I thought the European works would be very different from the #Armenian ones, having been produced in a different cultural context. But I'm finding now that they're more similar than I'd assumed—at least, in the ways that would have been noticeable to the average Armenian reader around 1700. 9/
With the biography done, I'm now writing about Hohannēs's translation of Thomas a Kempis's The Imitation of Christ. It's been so interesting to read about how popular of a book this has been all over the world over the past 500 years. I've found that it's an anthology, really, the overall title being the incipit of the title of chapter 1: "De imitatione Christi et contemptu omnium vanitatum mundi." A more descriptive title would be "A Manual in Humility for Monastics." 12/?
Although Imitation was written in a totally different context (a European monastery in the 15th century), it's not as different from something like Grigor Narekatsi's Book of Lamentations (Մատեան ողբերգութեան) as I'd thought. They're both very humble and humbling works. They're quite complimentary, and, for that reason, they can't be categorized as simply Apstolic versus Catholic within an Ottoman-Armenian context—which is how I was thinking of them initially. 13/? @bookhistodons
I've been reading The Coming Wave by Mustafa Suleyman. He's not saying it outright, but I'm hearing him say that we're headed for corporate power explicitly replacing nation-states, governing the areas where they operate and protecting only their needs and employees. I really don't want to live in a Cyberpunk world. It's not a good one.
@DejahEntendu@bookstodon Yeah, and the trauma was being betrayed by the girl who gave him his first "adult" experience. Not being shot in the head. So it's just weird.
Do it slowly and don’t be consistent, sometimes I select the tile with 3 pixels of the thing its supposed to contain, sometimes I leave 2 or 3 tiles that clearly contain the thing, sometimes I just select a tile that doesn’t even match. Idk, it always works, I suppose the erratic behavior is what shows them I’m human or smth
It was 3°C this morning... no summer or holiday mood, I'm afraid.
Work in the study at home in 13° max with no heating cos I'd be losing 90% of the heat to no insulation cos AUS builds like it's the 1840ies in England.

Sorry to hear about the deficits of Australian architecture. I totally understand that it is hard to have summer feelings under these conditions.
But we have loads of evidence of #emdiplomats who complain about the rain, cold and the wheather in general. So, you are in good company. 😉
A little rant about the Android operating system @android
Everyone felt weird when I said I was using custom ROMs. Most of them haven't heard about anything beyond stock android. I wrote a blog trying to normalise it. https://text.tchncs.de/czars-blogs/custom-roms-and-my-phone
I do absolutely agree that this sucks. However, most people don’t actually need this. Yes, it’s very convenient, but I found that pretty much all banking apps, at least for people I have helped support, offer a web client anyways that’s just as good. It’s only missing things like NFC tap payment.
Of course, don’t get me wrong. A lot of solutions don’t offer web UIs, and that sucks. But we can’t force everyone to be a not shitty developer Sadly.
I also do really miss tap payments with my phone. It’s really nice just taking my phone when I go shopping and maybe $20 in cash. Not needing to worry about my car or anything else.
Flashing a custom ROM is an arcane process, most up to date documentation is hidden in chat apps and if you miss a step, you risk boot-looping your device with no chance of recovery or warranty.
