I’d love to see parents flabbergasted by their children refusing the shellfish daddy worked hard to buy, and making sure their clothes don’t use mixed fabrics.

some people here on Lemmy get upset at any mention of Ranked Choice Voting and respond that, in their opinion, it’s not perfect

To those people, I say: do not let perfection be the enemy of progress.

Also, it’s absurd, because it’s clearly better than what we have now. I suspect many of those people are trolls.

The Government’s theory would also criminalize a broad swath of prosaic conduct, exposing activists and lobbyist to decades in prison…And the Government’s interpretation would give prosecutors broad discretion to seek a 20-year maximum sentence for acts Congress saw fit to punish with far shorter sentences.

From the decision.

In short, the prosecutor used a non-applicable charge against this individual. The case was remanded back to lower courts to continue.

notanaltaccount , in ‘The Movement to Convince Biden to Not Run Is Real’

The conspiracy theorists all say Joe is supposed to step down and Gavin Newsom somehow is added to the ticket which then will win. These conspiracy theorists also say that candidates are selected in advance by the powers that be and it’s all pagentry to deceive the gullible masses. If this is true, then Joe needs no convincing and this is already decided.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Then why parrot chafe into the conversation at all?

notanaltaccount ,

I am adding it for posterity in case it does happen. I don’t believe or disbelieve this, but I have seem “conspiracy theories” proven true later and sometimes it’s like people forget the “crazy” people mentioned the truth months or years prior. I want this here so that if proven true, the word “misinformation” will start to be viewed skeptically as the Ministry of Truth word that it is, divorced from science and discourse.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Adding distracting points into the public discourse when people are seeking clarity doesn’t seem like a noble goal.

What do you get out of it at the end, the ability to say “told you so”?

What if Kamala does step in due to the very real odds of a medical issue happening, then shall we start believing conspiracy theorists on other points?

My point remains the same, you’re occluding understanding of the situation, both currently and in the future, and I don’t like that.

notanaltaccount ,

Others are occluding discourse by banning discussion as misinformation to control all narratives, then acting as though conspiracy theorists weren’t correct. This narrative control is from an elite whose lies are vast enough to occlude the sun.

RubberElectrons ,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Overly dramatic verbiage aside, I’m not seeing any discussion here, of utility anyway.

Melody , in Police in New York shoot and kill 13-year-old holding a pellet gun, authorities say

I should point out that pellet guns do not have a ‘Day-Glo Safety Orange/Red’ tip.

As they do eject actually harmful projectiles; they look much like other guns until you get close to them. Reasonable parenting would have included making sure the child understood that under no circumstances do you point that at people.

That doesn’t make this less of a tragedy, but it does provide some context to the situation. Cops are, sadly, trained out of necessity not to try to discern when on the receiving end of any gun barrel. While it’s difficult to expect a child to know not to point weapons at police; doing so is in fact dangerous.

NateNate60 ,

You can’t really trust the orange tip anyway, since criminals have been known to paint that on real guns to trick cops, with mixed success.

Regardless, from a police officer’s perspective, you only have half a second to tell whether an object that someone is getting out of their pocket is a gun or something less harmful, like a cell phone. So it’s understandable why they chose to shoot in this situation.

Of course, if it were harder for the general public to get guns, then police wouldn’t be put in these situations where they have to make life-and-death decisions in under a second, but we have to live with the consequences of which rights we chose to value.

shalafi ,

Right with ya, until…

if it were harder for the general public to get guns

Is there anywhere harder to get a gun? Even pellet guns are illegal in NYC. You can be legal in one state, passing through to another state where you’re legal, and NY can take your ass to jail for a gun in the trunk.

So. More laws might help?

NateNate60 ,

Laws aren’t, by themselves, an effective way to keep dangerous guns out of the hands of criminals, because it is really easy to (illegally) import guns from a place with lax gun laws into a place with strict gun laws. There’s also a problem with existing gun laws encountering enforcement problems from law enforcement agencies who refuse to enforce them or who don’t care enough about it.

On top of that, there is a cultural problem where guns are associated with masculinity and being “cool”. That leads to way more people acquiring them than there really should be, and many of those people really shouldn’t be having them. That’s not something the law can fix.

Remember when a huge coalition of people wanted RBG to retire? And then she didn’t, and those people took it as courage or some such other virtue?

Crikeste ,

I only remember people being so pissed that she didn’t, they celebrated when she died. I don’t remember anyone who wanted her to step down calling it ‘courageous’ when she didn’t.

notanaltaccount ,

There’s a herd mentality that often overrides practical thinking, along with the desire not to offend.

I think for RBG she had worked so hard to get there as a woman, and she probably felt like men don’t retire from the role just to please political concerns so why should she? Could she see the mess the country is in, she would have retired.

Lucidlethargy ,

Her lack of oversight is one of the only things many of us will ever remember her for. She set all women back 50 years by not stepping down. That’s part of her legacy now, and it always will be.

Her decision is a lesson for all those who will listen. We need to stop gambling with the future of our country. The best decision for everyone always needs to be put forward, and even the best people need to step down, if needed, to preserve and secure progress.

notanaltaccount ,

It’s true. Her stubbornness leading to a conservative supermajority is what her legacy is now, instead of her trailblazing. Maybe one day when trans people aren’t considered fourth class citizens and we live in a better world, people will go back to remembering her trailblazing. She made a terrible gamble due to a lack of fear, and it was selfish or naive.

Fucking hate when you get “too old” out of people for one side but not the other.

All these fossils should have been sent to the farm years ago.

Max age for starting a term should be 70. In most places you can’t be in control of a car without regular tests when you reach that age, yet you can be in control of the largest nuclear arsenal on Earth if you can still tell the difference between a cow and a horse.

EnderMB , in Oklahoma schools head Ryan Walters: Teachers who won't teach Bible could lose license

Surely this could backfire in so many hilarious ways?

  • Teach the parts that conservatives don’t do, and teach your class to call out injustice everywhere.
  • Teach the bible in Aramaic or Ancient Hebrew, and give the kids 30 mins of study time to learn whatever they want from it.
  • Use it as an exercise to teach that many parts were written thousands of years ago, and doesn’t have current medical or societal advancements, so that many parts might be up to interpretation.
  • Compare it to Islam, Judaism, and other sects of Christianity - and teach that they’re basically the same thing and that everyone should get along.
  • Reference that the pope said years ago that even nonbelievers that led a good life would be offered a seat in heaven, so be nice and it’ll all be fine.

Oh I don’t know that I would make the claim that major world religions are all about people getting along. I’d say we can find some parts that are much less friendly than that.

Why don’t we go back to Genesis. Lot is an exciting character, and tells us a lot about God’s character. And then it gets creepy too.

SeaJ , in Police in New York shoot and kill 13-year-old holding a pellet gun, authorities say

One of them fled and pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the officers, according to a statement by the Utica Police Department.

If the footage confirms this, it makes sense that the officer shot him. Don’t point guns or gun replicas at people.

But they were fleeing and pointed a gun at him? Either the reporting is shitty or it did not happen like the police say it happened.

Frozengyro ,

You can run and point a gun backwards/shoot in their general direction.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And unless you’re some sort of trick shot marksman, you won’t be any danger to the cops.

Frozengyro ,

Thetimefarm ,

I mean shooting randomly is always dangerous to someone. People get hit by stray bullets literally every day in america.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

This isn’t entirely accurate.

First, just because they’re only slightly less accurate than most cops… doesn’t mean they’re not able to get lucky.

Secondly, I’m reminded of an incident I saw security recordings of, from a guy running across a light rail platform (warehouse district in Minneapolis,) dude was spraying behind him. While running.

Missed all of the people he was aiming at, killed 4 people all the same.

ACAB, so I’m not saying the cops didn’t fuck up. (Or even plant the damn pellet gun…) but yeah. There’s a reason that’s the narrative.
