They might as well. Moscow has shown in multiple ways over the past few years that their security “guarantees” are meaningless.

ChrisLicht , in Russell Brand: Thames Valley Police investigates allegations

Uh oh. I’m worried about this getting properly investigated.

I don’t know much about British policing, but I do know from watching Endeavour that the centralization of operations in the newly created Thames Valley Constabulary in the late ‘60s did not produce investigative efficiencies.

Currens_felis , in US agency sues Tesla as Black workers report “swastikas, threats, and nooses”

Looks like Tesla isn’t the progressive company some people pretended it is.

RvTV95XBeo ,

With such a progressive leader, how is this possible?

/s

BruceTwarzen ,

In such a progressive country

Destraight ,

Which people specifically told you that Tesla was a progressive company?

ahal ,

Green energy was practically synonymous with progressiveness when Tesla was first gaining popularity.

Destraight ,

That’s more of a well rounded statement than specifically naming people, but ok

sebinspace ,

My more naive and younger self honestly believed Tesla were a shining example of capitalism done right. Now the only thing I believe they’ve honestly done is show the commercial and technical viability of electric vehicles to the rest of the auto industry, who proceeded to curbstomp them with better build quality. At this point, if and when I can afford a Tesla, I’ll be looking to other manufacturers instead.

Porsche’s offerings look quite nice…

Moobythegoldensock , in ‘We are not in the business of ice cream’: Big Oil CEOs defend themselves against climate criticism

“So, the debate has always been posed here, I’m reminded of an old saying: ‘If you want to keep everyone happy, sell ice cream.’ We are not in the business of ice cream — and I’m reminded, there are people who are lactose intolerant,”

… what? The longer you stretch an analogy, the higher the chance it’s going to sound stupid and weird.

Jokes aside, it’s really not the responsibility of the oil barons to sunset their own injury. The responsibility is on the lawmakers who sold us all out to lobbyists for campaign money. We could have regulated this industry 30 years ago and had it all but obsoleted by now, but instead we did fuck all.

anderfrank , (edited )

Agreed, oil companies knew climate change was real forever ago and bought off politicians to keep them from doing anything about it.

BTW Climate Town is an amazing YouTube channel for climate-related content, hilarious and educational.

bobman ,

Stop voting for politicians that can be bought?

I know they’re out there, we just need to give them support.

Kichae ,

The system required personally ambitious people to the right thing for everyone instead of the thing that would get them further ahead as an individual. In the face of the wealth and power of the oil industry, corruption was almost inevitable, sadly.

Lemmylaugh ,

“After three or four years, I understood that maybe I was naïve, we will not please the activists. We will never make enough to please the ones which are against oil and gas, but my mission is not to please them,” Pouyanne said.

Yikes there’s another problem. Maybe someone over there should make it the mission to listen to the scientists.

GBU_28 ,

Cynically, why?

There’s a global demand for oil and gas.

Why shouldn’t they want to meet that demand?

Like, he and others like him across the world don’t want to save the planet, they want to make money.

It is the role of government, and tangentially, tech innovators to decide that oil and gas shouldn’t be used. Then government and innovation build the tools, products and frameworks to make that a reality.

I’m not defending oil and gas, I’m simply pointing out that it isn’t illegal to meet a global demand, someone other than him is supposed to replace that demand.

afraid_of_zombies ,

Both can be true. You can hate the player and hate the game.

GBU_28 ,

Fine, hate everyone, but why should this guy listen to scientists? He’s making money hand over fist and seemingly has no reservations about it.

afraid_of_zombies ,

Don’t mind if I do.

Nudding ,

That’s why selling out the planet for profit should be made illegal.

Sodis ,

He got 4 kids in their 30s. Leaving them a world worth living in could be something worthwhile to pursue.

GBU_28 ,

He’s made it clear he doesn’t care, making oil is his motivation.

Besides that’s not the point. I commented on the motivation of an oil and gas exec “listening” to scientists

captainlezbian ,

I’m not saying that Kaczynski was right, but maybe people like this need to fear bombs from the citizens of the planet they’re murdering.

And they’re right they can’t cut emissions enough to please us until they hit zero. That’s the amount we need to get to

GBU_28 ,

Some people have sensitive teeth!

captainlezbian ,

At the same time as human beings they did have a responsibility to look at the devastation of their industry and not hide that or buy off regulators. Additionally you can argue they had a responsibility to begin the transition to less destructive energy in earnest. And they sure as shit had a responsibility to not buy out school curricula to indoctrinate children away from green energy like seriously what the fuck

bobman ,

The responsibility is on the lawmakers who sold us all out to lobbyists for campaign money.

Slight correction.

The responsibility is on the consistency to vote for lawmakers that don’t succumb to bribery.

Blaming politicians for the world’s problems instead of voters is like blaming companies for climate change but not customers.

guyrocket , (edited )
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

No. Should have brought bear spray. Apparently the latest wisdom is that guns aren't very effective against bear but the spray is.

GBU_28 ,

Porque no las dos

guyrocket ,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

Yes, not a crazy idea. But if you see that Wikipedia article you need bigger caliber weapons to be effective.

SHOW_ME_YOUR_ASSHOLE ,

Bear spray is the first line of defense assuming the wind is at my back or non-existent. The backup plan is 12 rounds of 10mm Buffalo Bore or Underwood handgun ammunition.

The only close encounter I’ve had with a grizzly (and a moose too) was in Canada where I was not allowed to have my handgun. I made a point to not wander more than maybe 25 feet from my vehicle so I could make a quick getaway if needed. The grizzly came within 100 feet of me on a river bank on the opposite side of the Kluane river in Yukon Territory and the moose wandered up river then floated downriver.

sudo22 ,
@sudo22@lemmy.world avatar

What? That link immediately refutes this claim in the next sentence “Although this claim has been disputed because of the 83 incidents in the Smith study[10] only 18 cases involved an aggressive bear, and of those 18 only 9 involved a charging bear.”

bingbong ,

A lot of common calibers really don’t do much against a damn grizzly, those bastards have every possible cheat code active.

AA5B ,

Or, how about avoiding those life and death situations? I’ll “stand my ground” that most bear attacks are caused by people. Don’t do that. Don’t be stupid and rely on blasting away to save your life. Bear bells, secure food storage away from people, not getting too close with your photo attempt, are much more effective

sudo22 ,
@sudo22@lemmy.world avatar

Yes I agree do all of this, don’t just shoot everything you see. But on the chance this fails or you make a mistake, you should have a gun as a last resort.

masterspace ,

If every back country hiker was strapped up we would have more deaths, not less.

sudo22 ,

Okay bud. If you don’t want to carry by all means no one is forcing you. But I’m going to protect my family when we camp or need to visit bear country for any reason.

staticblanket ,

Okay bud but this is Canada.

sudo22 ,
@sudo22@lemmy.world avatar

Many guns are still legal in Canada.

masterspace ,

Carrying them openly at camp sites and in national or provincial parks is not.

More people carrying guns will result in more suicide, more domestic violence murders, and more accidental homicides than it will prevent human deaths from fucking bears.

Grow up.

sudo22 ,
@sudo22@lemmy.world avatar

Go unarmed then. I don’t actually care what you do. But if carrying a gun gives me a last resort to save my family in bear country, I’m going to train and carry.

If holding a gun makes you suicidal, homicidal, or if you’re worried you’ll accidentally kill someone, don’t carry or seek training.

Do what’s responsible for you.

masterspace ,

CalamityBalls ,

From someone firmly against the proliferation of firearms, I think taking a gun on a camping trip where there might be bears is a pretty solid idea.

SHOW_ME_YOUR_ASSHOLE ,

Gun owners have to pipe in whenever there’s a legitimate reason for a firearm otherwise the narrative is that we only have them because we love mass shootings and dead children.

masterspace ,

We know you love them cause they make you feel like a big man, their widespread ownership just also always leads to mass shooting and the mass death of children.

We understand where you’re coming from, we just think your prioritization is objectively and statistically stupid.

sudo22 ,
@sudo22@lemmy.world avatar

Agree but you need to be very mindful for the type of gun.

Any more typical pistol like 9mm, 380, 45ACP won’t do much against a bear. 10mm high penetration rounds (ie not holopoints, hard cast is preferable) is probably the minimum I’d want if I can’t carry a rifle in bear country.

She doesn't seem too bad, she has a history of helping union workers in nursing and janitorial duties. So she had a good history for organized labor

However....

Butler joined SCRB Strategies as a partner in 2018. At SCRB, she played a central role in Kamala Harris's 2020 presidential campaign. Butler also advised Uber in its dealings with organized labor while at SCRB.

Butler left SCRB in 2020 to join Airbnb as director of public policy and campaigns in North America

SCRB Strategies seems to be a "for profit" political consultation group. Airbnb needs no introductions.

It's hard to say whether she took the money or not. While some organizations declare her net worth around $300,000, others report it around $16 million.

Laphonza Butler owns more than 7 real estate properties, valued at over $3 million in total. These properties bring in nearly $500,000 annually in rental income. She also invests in stocks and government bonds worth $2.5 million. Her investments include big names like Tesla, Microsoft, ExxonMobil, Google, Walmart, Universal Studios, and Bank of America.

TLDR: So at least from what I can see in her past.

She is going to be big oil on issues, she is going to also have a lot of personal incentive to keep rental prices high, and she has a bit of a history defending labor. What that means going forward is going to be hazy.

Butler seems about as left-wing as one could expect in the current Democratic party machine; she’ll be an improvement on Feinstein. I was expecting the DCCC to push some corporate stooge from the Clintonian right of the party, and, while she’s not perfect, I’m pleasantly surprised.

Muun , in James Webb telescope makes 'JuMBO' discovery of planet-like objects in Orion

What’s intriguing about the discovery is that these objects appear to be moving in pairs. Astronomers are currently struggling to explain them.

I always hate when science reporting does this. Astronomers are not struggling to explain them, they just don’t have enough data to take a hypothesis to a theorem!

The article even tells us possible explanations:

One possibility is that these objects grew out of regions in the nebula where the density of material was insufficient to make fully fledged stars.

Another possibility is that they were made around stars and were then kicked out into interstellar space through various interactions.

“The ejection hypothesis is the favoured one at the moment,” said Prof Mark McCaughrean.
