iByteABit , in How a picture of bedsheets from dark web led police to Brisbane childcare centre and man’s arrest

As sickening as this is I am pretty intrigued as to what clues they found through the bedsheets, sounds like some great detective work

originalucifer ,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

my guess would be patterns on industrial-used linens. guy worked for centers that likely used laundry services with patterns generic to some or all industry,

girlfreddy OP ,

Hotels sometimes have monogramed items, ie: a logo printed or embroidered on sheets, towels, etc.

Or they use a certain patterned sheet style so the cleaning services they use know who the sheets belong to (vs. all motels/hotels using plain white sheets that are redistributed willy nilly).

ArugulaZ ,

I've been watching a lot of Forensic Files lately, and I could very easily imagine an episode of that based on this crime, complete with disturbing narration by Peter Thomas.

SheeEttin ,

I would guess it’s a pattern only sold in certain areas. For example, an Australian children’s cartoon character print. Combine that with other stuff like the type of wall outlets, or any other branded products only sold in certain countries, and you can start to narrow it down.

Treczoks , in Oklahoma parents, faith leaders and education group sue to stop US’s first public religious school

While this might have severe issues with separation of state and church, those people probably are against the idea that someone might teach an unbiased, analytical approach to religion as such...

fireweed , (edited ) in Biggest apartment construction boom in decades likely to bring renters uneven relief

Criminally neglected by this article: Yesterday’s luxury housing is today’s affordable housing.

The problem is we underbuilt for decades and don’t have enough “yesterday” housing to fill “today’s” demand, and new affordable housing often doesn’t pencil out without unsustainable amounts of government subsidies. This article makes the NIMBY-fuel mistake of bemoaning the luxury housing as basically useless without acknowledging that 1) these units will become more affordable over time and are part of a necessary return to rent price stability and a balanced market, and 2) in low-vacancy markets, luxury housing relieves pressure on mid-price housing which in turn relieves pressure on low-price housing, which is not enough to resolve the issue but still better than building nothing.

Too often is the argument “we shouldn’t allow this apartment/condo building because it’s not going to be affordable” followed by “we shouldn’t allow this subsidized affordable apartment/condo building because it will strain local resources/destroy the character of the neighborhood/increase crime and traffic/uglify the neighborhood with its cheap appearance.” Opposition to luxury housing is the top rung on the NIMBY ladder, and NIMBYism leads to housing shortages, which lead to affordability crises.

dumples , in As work begins on the largest US dam removal project, tribes look to a future of growth
@dumples@kbin.social avatar

The restoration of this former reservoir is going to be an epic task of conservation with very interesting results. I'm sure extensive measurement and tracking will make this not only a useful scientific experiment but hopefully a prototype for future dam removals.

It would be so cool to view it live in action over time

betterdeadthanreddit , in Pentagon hit by ‘critical compromise’ of US air force communications – report

Guy put all his points into INT but WIS was his dump stat. Might just be one of those nerds who got too comfortable taking his work home with him after getting away with things for a while and kept escalating the bad behavior, good thing the contractor was paying attention and reported the suspicions. Hopefully this will lead to more effective oversight when it comes to sensitive items.

Nijuu , in Moscow targeted again as Kyiv steps up drone attacks inside Russia

Wasn’t there a point where if Ukraine took the fight and crossed the Russian border, that Nato and Ukraines supporters would withdraw their support?

Yes. The very first one of these suicide drone attacks Ukraine still denies it was them lol

MicroWave OP , in Katie Ledecky breaks Michael Phelps' record for most individual world titles
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

At the World Aquatic Championships in Fukoka, Japan, Ledecky collected her 16th world title by winning the 800-meter freestyle, her favorite distance, with a time of 8:08.87. It marked her sixth consecutive time winning that distance — the longest ever streak in a single event in the championships’ history.

febra , in US man who killed woman by driving car through BLM protest pleads guilty

Terrorist

uncle ,

Not really. Maybe you should actually read the article.

Pissnpink ,

He drove his car the wrong way on the freeway to hit the girls. You can argue about the label terrorist, but he’s certianly a murderer .

On 4 July 2020, the Washington state patrol said Kelete drove the wrong way on to Interstate 5 in Seattle, around a barricade of parked vehicles, and struck both Taylor and Diaz Love.

crimroy ,

Murderer, and mentally ill. Which is almost always the case with these kinds of things. I think we as humans try to look for a single cause of problems and it’s always a mix of things

SeaJ ,

Dawit Kelete’s a massive piece of shit but almost certainly not a terrorist. He most likely knew the interstate would be blocked off at night (it had been nightly for a week or two) and took the opportunity to go hot rodding in his car. He definitely knew he illegally went up an off ramp since he has lived here in Seattle for a couple decades. Terrorism implies he did it for political purposes. There is occasional beef between East African immigrants and the black community here but there is no evidence of that here and he has no history of that. He also does not have a history of harassing the LGBTQ community which Summer was a part of.

What is also certain is that he did not accidentally go up an offramp like shit heads on the right have suggested. He has lived in this city for over 20 years. That is not some unknown offramp he would be unfamiliar with. He knew what he was doing was illegal and it got someone killed.

Pissnpink ,

Yeah, seems like all the articles written about the incident report on vehicular manslaughter, vehicular assult and wreckless driving.

Kelete’s attorney claims as much, “This tragic event was not a political act or statement," said attorney Francisco A. Duarte, who is representing Kelete

That said, it seems like you have a bit of community knowledge.

Hazdaz , in NASA is launching its own streaming service later this year

I’m very excited to see what they do with this.

NASA and scientific research in general has a huge marketing problem - too mqny people think science is boring and only for nerds. They also think it is easy or possibly even made-up.

Regular people just don’t understand the amount of work that goes into scientific research and they also don’t understand the limitations of it as well as the amiunt of checks and balances that discoveries need to go through. We are all familiar with bullshit science fiction of Hollywood movies,but few understand what it takes to really develop a new rocket or plan a space mission.

We need NASA+ to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. We also need it to get folks excited again about exploring space. It’s far easier to get funding from Congress for these missions when the general population is excited to hear about discoveries. NASA needs to use this channel as a way to get regular folks interested in their research and hype up various missions and discoveries.

dragonflyteaparty , in Judge blocks Arkansas law allowing librarians to be criminally charged over ‘harmful’ materials

Wtaf. I’m so baffled by how far these people are willing to go in the name of taking things away from other people’s kids.
