TeamDman , in 133 Degrees and No Ac: Kids at Angola Prison Kept in Potentially Deadly Heat

OJJ policy states that children can be sent to Angola from other facilities for any number of reasons, including committing certain acts of violence against a staff member or possessing marijuana. Even kids determined to have a serious mental illness or “significant developmental disabilities” can be transferred to the unit.

Charles C. was hospitalized at 10 years old and diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and ADHD, according to a previous statement submitted to the court. He was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after being shot at age 13 and has been hospitalized several times for mental health crises.Ah yes, let’s starve our children and put them in oven jail… Because of weed and mental health. That sounds healthy.

Hell, even if they were rapists or murderers they shouldn’t be getting treated like this -

Children incarcerated on the former death row unit of Louisiana’s Angola prison were locked in their cells without air conditioning for several days this month amid scorching summer temperatures, according to a teenager held at the facility. The child, identified by the pseudonym Charles C., said in a statement to his attorney that the kids were only let out of their cells for an eight-minute shower, which they had to take while handcuffed with their ankles shackled.

On Monday night, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other legal groups submitted statements from young people held at Angola to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana. The plaintiffs asked the court to order State officials to immediately move all kids out of the unit and to cease transfers into the unit. With heat indexes in the surrounding area reaching as high as 133 degrees this month, a medical expert for the plaintiffs warned the court that the conditions could be fatal.

“I would not dare to keep my dog in these conditions for fear of my dog dying,” Dr. Susi U. Vassallo, a medical expert for the plaintiffs, wrote in a statement submitted to the court. “It has been dangerously hot in Angola so far this summer. Confining children for all or most of the day to concrete and cement buildings without air conditioning is foolhardy and perilous.”

indomara ,

I thought a child could not be formally diagnosed with bipolar… It is also extremely rare for a child under 13 to have schizophrenia. This poor kid.

DigitalTraveler42 , in Three finalists picked for job of Chicago police superintendent

Angel Novalez seems like the obvious pick, judging from this article, the other two would be purely political picks based on race. Novalez has actually shown a willingness to innovate and change the force to improve relations, and that’s the most important thing for a city with Chicago’s issues, rebuilding community trust and modifying how the police operate for the better.

Also Snelling having the “trust of the officers” is just a red flag to me, the officers just want to be shielded by a boss that protects them, sure Snelling may be good for the Chicago cops, but what’s good for them isn’t necessarily what’s good for the city, since the cops of the city have become part of the problems for the city, screw their trust. Chicago needs a reformer and that again seems to be Novalez.

Flying right now seems like an absolute shit show. Sure you may get to your destination but not always on time.

My facebook "memories" over the last month have been filled with images of me and my family stranded at various airports due to flight delays and cancellations. Flying in the summer is fraught with complications, and has been for as long as I've lived.

Mr_Buscemi ,
@Mr_Buscemi@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Lol the last time I flew was a shit show. Here’s a recap.

As the flight attendant is giving us the safety instructions and about to lock the door, a lady opens the airplane door even though the path should have been closed down. The attendant was pissed since they all had to restart the pre flight stuff from the beginning.

When they finished it all a second time we got told that a part of the plane was broken and they were working on it. An hour later they said they were opening the door and letting us walk around the airport to get food or go to the bathroom for the next 25 minutes.

When they all came back the the attendance started the pre-flight stuff again. When he finish everything a person came up and said hey I’m on the wrong flight and the flight attendant just looked so shocked and confused since he had never had that happen before. They let the guy off as the attendant looked like he was about to give up.

The attendant had to restart the pre-flight stuff AGAIN. Luckily the plane was working now after two hours waiting on the runway and the flight began.

rouxdoo , in In-N-Out bans mask wearing for employees in some states
@rouxdoo@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t have a problem with this. I was an “essential” employee in the before-times and I muddled through and never had an incident of sickness…I think my masking and sanitation saved me from hazard. I’m not downplaying the whole pandemic - I lost a few very good people because of it (I miss you, Russ).

The before-times are past…we need to work through the now times and that requires that we are together as people and a part of being present in the now-times is not hiding behind fear. We need to connect and see each others visage to gauge our connections.

Wear a mask if you have the sniffles (cold/flu), wear a mask if you want to avoid allergens or smoke in the air. Wear a mask if you, like me, are just plain ugly and it makes others more comfortable but do not wear a mask because of covid anymore. That threat is behind us as a people just as the Spanish Flu is behind us as a people, despite it’s presence in the world at large.

Speculater ,
@Speculater@lemmy.world avatar

The policy says only with a doctor’s letter. So if you’re sick, no mask is allowed, sniffles or not. Unless you go see a provider.

Do they offer insurance? It should be illegal to require doctors notes if you don’t offer insurance. Fuck, insurance should be illegal and visiting doctors should be free.

The DoE has a national security and safety mandate, and includes biotech laboratories and covid-19 technical assistance program. Additionally, the DoE has a very well funded and competent intelligence and counter-intelligence agency, responsible for assessing both domestic and foreign national security threats.
