june , in Delta passengers fall ill while stuck on tarmac for hours during blistering Las Vegas heatwave

“Uncomfortable temperatures” is a wild understatement. People could have died

n33rg , in Taco John's has given up its 'Taco Tuesday' trademark after a battle with Taco Bell

Taco John’s is asking Taco Bell to match its $100-per-restaurant donation to the nonprofit Children of Restaurant Employees, or CORE.

I hope Taco Bell matches this since they get to save on the legal fees. This would make this good news all around. Except that apparently the trademark is still held by Gregory Hotels Inc in New Jersey, so not fully in the clear yet!

Hank , in A 16-year-old has died at a Mississippi poultry processing plant, county coroner says

Should've been careful around those sharp talons.

qwertyqwertyqwerty ,

That’s a good point. I don’t know anything about poultry processing plants, but is there dangerous (to human) equipment in these facilities, and why would a 16 year old be using said equipment? I remember working at Wendy’s and I wasn’t even allowed to use the chicken fryer at that age.

oSillyScope ,

Republicans have been rolling back child labor regulations and protections in multiple states claiming it will save us from the labor shortage. I’m surprised it has taken me this long to see a story about the predictably disastrous results of this exploitative behavior. In the US capitalism is winning and the citizens of this country are losing.

NeedingvsGetting ,

July 1st, a 16-year-old died in a sawmill accident in northern Wisconsin. At the same time, the gerrymandered-as-hell state legislature is trying to eliminate child labor laws. Thank god we currently have a governor with a modicum of decency to veto the garbage.

I worked at a Foster Farms processing facility, and even in just the shipping department there are machines that could take your fucking head off and other things that could crush you if you’re not paying attention (which is hard because it’s also dark and loud). The rest of the plant is just as dangerous, if not more so. It’s one of the reasons I quit.

SheeEttin ,

Yeah, my money is on the kid being inside a machine that you’re not supposed to be in, plus not being properly locked out/tagged out. When you’re a kid and the boss says “go clean out the machine”, you don’t really think “hmm, maybe there’s a safer way to do this”, you think “boss says do it, so it must be okay”. You just don’t have the experience.

Selmafudd ,

I worked at what I would call a medium size plant, we processed 80-120k a day. There are a few minor crush hazards but honestly the biggest dangers would be accidents involving forklifts or trucks.

I had no idea the company was run by such huge assholes. I don’t think I’ve ever been to an In-n-Out, and now I know to avoid them.

skepticalifornia ,
@skepticalifornia@lemmy.world avatar

You’re not missing anything - they are pretty overrated with a very limited menu. In my opinion 5 Guys is better.

regular_human ,
@regular_human@lemmy.world avatar

And 5 guys is already overrated af

Clocksstriking13 ,

Isn’t the appeal of in-n-out the lower price point compared to other fast food burger places, rather than the options or stellar flavor? 5 guys is way more expensive and the customization/taste reflects that.

skepticalifornia ,
@skepticalifornia@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed that 5 Guys is pricier (although here in CA fast food prices everywhere are through the roof) but, and this is just my opinion, which is basically worthless to anyone else - if I am going to pay In-n-out prices, I’d rather just go to Wendy’s or McDonalds. Although I will say that the shakes at in-n-out are the best, again just my opinion.

Galluf ,

5 guys is better, but also more than twice the price.

In N out isn’t the best, but they’re the best for their price.

frogfruit ,

P. Terry’s is comparable, but fairly new and currently limited to 30 or so locations in Texas.

vaultdweller013 ,

So why compare it to IN-N-Out a company largely based in california.

frogfruit ,

Because In N Out is also in Texas (my city has both), they are comparable in quality/price, and they are presently expanding. I’m sorry this information does not help you specifically, but that does not mean it’s useless to everyone.

no no they also what kids to work with out the need for parents to consent and to pay the child less then minimum wage

JayK117 , in Texas says no inmates have died due to stifling heat in its prisons since 2012. Some data may suggest otherwise

Pretty sure I saw an article once (might even have been a post from a CO) saying they take any dead bodies to the ambulance before recording time of death. Artificially gives them 0 deaths in custody or something

TwoMindsQ , in Taco John's has given up its 'Taco Tuesday' trademark after a battle with Taco Bell

I didn’t know they had it trademarked, I just knew John’s was better than Taco Bell lol.

Astroturfed ,

That’s a super low bar. I haven’t tried my dogs turds, but I’d still give dog turd like 20% chance of being better than most taco bell items.

TwoMindsQ ,

Taco Bell should raise their bar then.

dylanmorgan , in Justice Dept. assessing Texas razor wire at border that Mexico blasts as ‘inhumane’

Hearing the description of these buoy chains, they are there to kill people. The buoys spin on the cable they’re strung on, and under the buoy line is netting. There are blades between the buoys as well. Obrador’s words are completely accurate: these devices are barbaric.

Reminds me of the time a version of him refused to work with and tried to kill a version of Red Skull when he found out the dude was an actual Nazi rather than just cosplaying one. "I may be a criminal lunatic, but I am an American criminal lunatic". Which is an interesting take, dude's a sometimes omnicidal maniac who has on multiple occasions tried to destroy all of reality, but at least he's equal opportunity about it and it isn't for racist reasons.
