Talk about throwing shit at a wall to see what sticks.

Even acknowledging that the Supreme Court would reject it. A Supreme Court they stacked in their favor. What the absolute fuck lol

Remember that Venezuela coup they sponsored? That was like 3 actual ex-Navy guys and about 20 fishermen whose boats they hired? Lasted all of 10 minutes? That’s the brain trust behind the big lie. Master strategists they ain’t. I mean, thank goodness, since they’re utterly devoid of scruples, ethics, honor, or simple human decency.

SeaJ OP , in Banks fined $549M after senior execs found secretly texting on Signal, WhatsApp

Unsurprisingly Wells Fargo was the worst offender.

SeaJ , in In Tuesday's special election, Ohioans overwhelmingly voted against requiring a supermajority to amend their state constitution

Republicans purposely made this seemingly decent legislation complete shit. It makes sense to have a higher threshold for constitutional amendments. But 60% makes it nearly impossible. And this did not require its own 60% bar to pass. And it required getting signatures from all districts instead of just half which would mean only larger organizations could do it. All of it was bullshit. They went for a very thinly veiled power grab and the people told them to fuck off. Well done Ohio.

curve , in Voters in Ohio reject GOP-backed proposal that would have made it tougher to protect abortion rights

Abortion is the big ticket item and the headline isn’t wrong but it’s also more than that- it would’ve basically given the Ohio Republican Party power for decades. They already illegally gerrymander, etc. and this would’ve made them even more unaccountable.

  • Current rules- 44 counties to get signatures, 10 day cure period to gather more if you fall short, 50+% to pass.
  • Proposed rules- 5% from ALL 88 counties, no cure period, 60% to pass.

Essentially, grassroots initiatives already have a high hurdle and this would’ve made them effectively impossible. Only big moneyed interests could ever get anything on the ballot again.

Very, very happy it failed.

From my city’s Democrat group:

What landmark changes to Ohio law would have FAILED under Issue 1?

In just the 21st century:

  • 2000: Clean Ohio Fund; state can sell enviro bonds (57% in favor…would have FAILED)
  • 2005: Third Frontier program to modernize Ohio’s economy (54% in favor…would have FAILED)
  • 2006: Increasing minimum wage (57% in favor…would have FAILED)
  • 2009: Legalizing gambling at casinos in Cbus, CLE, Cincy, Toledo (53% in favor…would have FAILED)
  • 2015: Barring businesses from using amendment process to form monopolies (51% in favor…would have FAILED)

Let’s go further back now:

  • 1923: Remove the phrase “white male” from parts of the constitution describing VOTER ELIGIBILITY (56% in favor…would have FAILED)
  • 1933: Giving counties authority to create city charters with “home rule” (53% in favor…would have failed)
  • 1933: Set the 10-mill property tax limit that local governments can impose without getting approval from voters (59.7% in favor…would have FAILED)
  • 1949: Ending the practice of straight-ticket voting; voters must mark their candidates, not just check off a party (57% in favor…would have failed)
  • 1953: Creation of Ohio state school board, which advises local school districts on education policy (57% in favor…would have failed)
  • 1953: Allowing People of Color to serve in the Ohio National Guard (57% in favor…would have failed)
  • 1961: Allowing Women to serve in Ohio National Guard (50.1% in favor…would have failed)
  • 1975: Allowing charitable orgs to run bingo games, a form of gambling (54% in favor…would have failed)
  • 1978: Prison labor reform (54% in favor…would have failed)
  • 1982: Enabled lower-interest, first-time home-buyer programs that continue today (57% in favor…would have failed)
  • 1990: Tax credits and other steps to help finance housing projects (53% in favor…would have failed)

This is some great perspective on its effect, thank you.

JJROKCZ ,

So basically everything good in the last century wouldve failed and this law would’ve ensured Ohio would slide into the same useless bucket as Alabama on the national scale

captainlezbian ,

That’s what they’re trying now. Ohio is a major state, with multiple major cities, and a long history as a swing state due to being roughly even rural/urban. Like Columbus is really queer, Cleveland is just as Great Lakes as Toronto, Detroit, and Chicago, and we’ve also got Appalachia and a lot of what you probably can’t tell isn’t rural Indiana. Add in that Columbus is a major hub for business and it’s very valuable and perceived as takable.

captainlezbian ,

Man looking at some of these with the years next to them and Ohio used to be kinda based

And yeah there are other things that may desperately need to be changed about our constitution that wouldn’t clear the 60% mark even beyond abortion. Namely our constitution currently prohibits recognition of gay marriage, which while no longer an issue in the Obergefell era, may become relevant again depending on who bribes the Supreme Court.

They’re trying to force the big Cs to live at the whims of rural Ohioans despite how close the urban/rural population is

They would be under surveillance if they were protesting oil or trying to form a union.

Instead they are just being allowed to use fear and intimidation to undermine the freedoms some immigrants will experience in America. Strange that law enforcement seems to be ignoring the rival gang in its entirety.

GBU_28 ,

You think they aren’t being surveilled?

MasterObee , in Judges halt Biden rule offering student debt relief for those alleging colleges misled them

The government caused the insane bloating of college institutions by offering limitless funds and pushing every kid to go school, now they’re trying to use our tax dollars to put a band aid on their mistakes? Hell no.

btaf45 ,

(1) it’s not limitless, and (2) tuition and public institutions should be free anyway, and (3) tuition was really cheap until Ronald Reagan and his glorification of greed poisoned our entire culture.

CaptainPedantic ,

College is so expensive because the government does NOT offer lots of funding to public universities.

And the help the government provides in the form of loans is subpar. When I was going through college a few years ago, the interest rate on the loans that were offered to me by the government was higher than my parents credit card interest rates.

Our taxes should be used to pay for the education of future generations. Demanding the next generation improve society while making it as hard as possible for them is completely idiotic at best.

Pixlbabble , in Hillsborough schools cut back on Shakespeare, citing new Florida rules

Am I the only who doesn’t give an eff about Shakespeare? Sure I love the history of it all, but there’s too much good shit to read that doesn’t involve an annoying archaic English and will never use it again unless you do plays in the park.

Vrijgezelopkamers ,
@Vrijgezelopkamers@lemmy.world avatar

Except that apart from maybe the bible, there is probably not a single literary body of work that is as often refered to as Shakespeare’s in western media, literature, movies, series, games … you name it. It’ll help you appreciate A LOT of other stuff a lot more if you get into it a little. Shakespeare is used and reused everywhere, all the time.

Pixlbabble ,

Sure I see it all the time with different mediums and not just with Shakespeare. You don’t need to know or enjoy the original to love something newer. Outside of History or English majors why do I need to read something that reads so dumb when I read it. Sure I can be a fool or someone who just doesn’t like the style.

Zombiepirate ,
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

It’s fair to say that something is not for you, but Shakespeare is more than just old stories; they connect our culture back to its literary foundations. Of course one doesn’t have to know the original to love something newer; that was true in Billy Shake’s day too, since he stole those stories from history and mythology and put a new twist on them.

There is value in studying the classics: it is a lens through which we can examine a distant culture’s values, beliefs, drives, weaknesses, prejudice, and motivations to better reflect on our own. It is a cause worth pursuing, even if there’s no direct payoff. For better or worse, these rich and vibrant stories are part of our cultural canon and were written by a master storyteller and poet.

geogle ,
@geogle@lemmy.world avatar

Eh oh, way to go Ohio

Nevermore9197 ,

The people of Ohio are generally very centrist to left leaning. We however have been so (illegally) gerrymandered that it certainly doesn’t appear that way. Rural Ohio is Conservative just like everywhere else in this country.

When decisions are made democratically, as this was, we usually make the correct decision. That’s why the right tried to take this away from us.

broguy89 ,

Trump won Ohio. Presidential elections are not gerrymandered at the state level.

pennomi ,

That’s not strictly true. Each state determines its own way to determine delegates.

An except from www.archives.gov/electoral-college/allocation

All States, except for Maine and Nebraska, have a winner-take-all policy where the State looks only at the overall winner of the state-wide popular vote. Maine and Nebraska, however, appoint individual electors based on the winner of the popular vote within each Congressional district and then 2 “at-large” electors based on the winner of the overall state-wide popular vote.

While it is rare for Maine or Nebraska to have a split vote, each has done so twice: Nebraska in 2008, Maine in 2016, and both Maine and Nebraska in 2020.

Dark_Arc ,
@Dark_Arc@lemmy.world avatar

Well, it is true of Ohio.

na_th_an ,

Gerrymandering affects turnout, especially when done as blatantly and for as long as they have in Ohio.
