18_24_61_b_17_17_4 , in Tampa mayor finds big catch off Florida Keys: 70 pounds of cocaine

Mayor’s about to get a lot of shit done.

Cyder , in Students banned from using nicknames under new anti-trans Florida schools guidance

We call my son and daughter by shortened versions of their first names. Both are in High School in OCPS. Today they brought home the forms for us to sign to allow them to go by those shortened names in school. I was shocked.

Perhaps Ronald DeSantis should be forced to get permission from his family inorder to continue to be called Ron.

shadowSprite ,

The sad thing is, my brother has a name like “Benjamin”. My mother is a very mentally ill individual and is extremely militant about her children’s names “I chose your names and you will go by exactly what I named you!” and refused to let him go by “Ben” or let us call him “Ben”. Except, outside of the house he always went by Ben, she just didn’t know it. I always called him Ben when we weren’t home, because it’s what he wanted to be called. So kids like this would have to bring a form home and get their ass kicked by mom for going by a name they aren’t supposed to? Fuck that.

Whichwitch ,

My mom was the exact same way. “If I wanted you to be called that I would have named you that”.

foggy ,

I hope all media refer to him as Ronald until this goes away.

Let’s also not forget Rafael “Ted” Cruz, Leslie “Gerald Ford” King and Donald “Don Jr.” Trump, Jr.

leadrunes , in Students banned from using nicknames under new anti-trans Florida schools guidance

youth have been turned into political cannon fodder for generations. we’re creating mass poverty and homelessness on a hockey stick curve yet we have to continue to focus all our attention on garbage engineered to divide the population like this. really cool stuff

MicroWave OP , in US Navy sailor's mom encouraged him to pass military details to China, prosecutor says
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

Prosecutors have said Wei, who was born in China, was first approached by a Chinese intelligence officer in February 2022 while he was applying to become a naturalized U.S. citizen, and admitted to the officer that he knew the arrangement could affect his application. Even so, prosecutors say he provided the officer detailed information on the weapons systems and aircraft aboard the Essex and other amphibious assault ships that act as small aircraft carriers.

pulaskiwasright ,

I’m surprised he had access to that info while not even being a citizen.

scary

carl_dungeon , in US Navy sailor's mom encouraged him to pass military details to China, prosecutor says

People like this family ruin it for all the hard working honest Chinese families that come here to try and improve their lives. This is fuel for racism and cultural distrust. Throw away the key.

ghostBones , in Texas woman mowing lawn attacked by snake and hawk – at the same time

Don’t be fooled. Nature is practicing her own version of drones dropping grenades for when she’s finally had it with our bullshit. Mushrooms, naked snakes, and worst of all, badgers.

This guy needs to die in prison. The mother should face charges &/or expulsion as well.

WarmSoda , in No bail for Chicago man accused of fatally shooting 9-year-old girl 'completely unprovoked'

The girls father tackled this asshole while he was trying to shoot again and he shot himself in the eye. That’s why he’s all stitched up.

MicroWave OP , in In Utah and Kansas, state courts flex power over new laws regulating abortion post-Roe
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

“State courts are incredibly important in this moment when patients are having difficulty accessing abortion because many states have banned it entirely so patients are traveling hundreds or even thousands of miles,” Alice Wang, a Center for Reproductive Rights attorney, told reporters after arguing providers’ case in a courtroom in the Kansas City area.

OldWoodFrame , in Over half of US student loan borrowers racked up credit card debt during the payment pause—now experts worry about 'shock'

If you actually click through the links, it’s 53% have “added a credit product” where that credit product is a bank credit card. Says nothing about their debt increasing.

So, 53% of a bunch of 20-somethings opened at least one credit card in a 3 year span when almost all commerce went online and the retail stores that remained stopped accepting cash.

Maybe there’s concerning data out there but this isn’t it.

Igotz80HDnImWinning ,

Gotta spin that narrative of irresponsible kids spending money recklessly tho

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Although, the study showed that the biggest loan payments were actually for Gen X and up.

gravitas_deficiency ,

Gotta save up all that latte and avocado toast money for my aspirational mortgage payment

0110010001100010 ,

Yeah I struggled to find anything in the article or linked citations that debt was added, only cards. There was a bit about mortgages and loans but I don't know how that compares to normal YOY to know if it really means anything.

afraid_of_zombies ,

A very telling omission.

arquebus_x ,

It’s not just 20-somethings. I’m 50 and still have $53k in student loan debt.

Ghostalmedia ,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

The bottom of that “study” is all you need to know about that study:

To better understand how a student loan payment shock may impact a consumer wallet, lenders can leverage TruVision Premium Student Loan Attributes, TruVision Trended Usage Payment Ratio Algorithms and TruVision Trended Liquidity Algorithms.

All that shit was basically just an ad to sell products to financial analysts. CNBC took the bait and advertised the products for them.
