lemmeout , in A private call of top Democrats fuels more insider anger about Biden's debate performance

I guess DNC Chairman gonna DNC Chairman. Maybe they need to relearn their lesson from 2016.

PugJesus ,

Cool, yeah, let’s ‘teach them a lesson’ by going deeper into fascism, that really worked the past ten times we’ve done it.

IndustryStandard ,

Do you believe Biden is more popular than Bernie or a progressive Democrat?

PugJesus ,

At the moment, no, because Bernie or another progressive Democrat isn’t in the spotlight.

If Bernie or another progressive took Biden’s place?

I’m not entirely discounting the idea that the American people could surprise me. But talking to ordinary voters, I’m not exactly filled with hope that there’s a secret cabal of super-compassionate left wing votes waiting to be activated by the right candidate. In fact, I’m filled with the suspicion that Bernie or another progressive Dem would be in the same spot, or worse, as Biden is currently.

And regardless of whether a progressive would perform better electorally, the fact remains that Trump is not a valid alternative to anyone with any hint of foresight.

Zaktor , in CNN reports 20-year record low debate viewership

This is the best news I’ve heard since the debate.

grabyourmotherskeys ,

And the Dems have tons of footage of Trump spouting crazy nonsense.

Everyone thought Biden was too old anyway but some undecided voters think Trump is “smart”.

Also, if you immigratted or your parents did, he just called you or your parents rapists, escaped convicts, mental patients, and terrorists.

MehBlah , in Los Angeles’s Mayor Was Contemplating a Mask Ban. She Just Got Covid.

Can you imagine being so ignorant that you seek to ban masks.

EndOfLine ,
@EndOfLine@lemmy.world avatar

The considered ban on masks was for protesters.

The idea of not allowing anonymity for protesters has its origins in combating racial violence and the KKK. Klan members suddenly lost a lot of their motivation to assemble in public, once they had to show their faces, those that did were less likely to commit illegal acts and the ones that did break the law were more likely to face legal reprocutions.

The contemplated ban on masks for protesters in Los Angeles was considered following increased violence by masked protesters and was not motivated by covid denial.

dogsnest ,
@dogsnest@lemmy.world avatar

But, if a protester has covid…?

RageAgainstTheRich ,

They haven’t thought that far yet 🤔

TrickDacy ,

This just in: more than a single factor can exist.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

We weren’t living in a world with cameras everywhere when the KKK needed to be attacked so vigorously. Times have changed and things should be updated. Especially in a world where bigots are fine marching without masks (see Charlottesville).

Buffalox ,

This is evidence that reading headlines from articles posted by u/return2ozma actually make you less informed and not more.
48 upvotes for claiming the mask ban was ignorant, when it was for protestors, and had nothing to do with Covid.

Warning dear sir, never assume a fair headline from an article posted by u/return2ozma.

xmunk ,

A mask ban for protesters would also limit our ability to stop a pandemic spreading. Mask bans are a bad idea (especially with creepy af facial recognition around).

GiddyGap , in ‘The Movement to Convince Biden to Not Run Is Real’

Not gonna happen. Also, the debate won’t make any difference. People made up their minds a long time ago on Biden vs Trump they are clearly not budging no matter what happens with the candidates. Only if they fall over dead will they be replaced.

dhork , (edited ) in 'It's a mess': Biden turns to family on his path forward after his disastrous debate

There is a third scenario which this article doesn’t address. The President has a natural understudy whose only job (other than to show up to the Senate a few times a year) is to take over in case a President can’t do his job anymore. So why are we all acting like it’s some big wildcard?

If any President had a major medical, condition – say, a stroke or heart attack – during a campaign it might be prudent for them to back out not just from the campaign but from the office itself. In that case, there is no question who takes over the ticket because it will be the new incumbent President.

Now, we all know Biden didn’t have any major medical episode. All he has is a sudden case of notgonnawinitis, complicated by inflammation of the opeds. But if he came out next week and said “I had a minor medical issue two days before the debate, my doctors said I would recover fully at the time but now they are not so sure, so I need to back out of all of it”, don’t you think the entire party would immediately (and enthusiastically!) hand the reins off to the vice-president, once they remember who she is?

LordCrom , in State Farm seeking 30% rate hike for California homeowners

Been dealing with this in Florida too. Many times you can’t even find an insurance policy, regardless of price.

Tramort , in Iranian Snap Elections Head to Runoff After Reformist Pezeshkian Takes Narrow Lead | Common Dreams

That title is really hard to parse.

I kept trying to figure out whose head got snapped.

Now that’s just the “create casus belli” from the Crusader Kings playbook.

supercargo , in South China Sea: Chinese academics urged to ‘construct narratives’ to defend maritime claims by China

This is nothing new.
Don’t they have scriptures that give them claim to the Moon too? Lel.

0x815 OP ,

Don’t know of Moon claims, but it’s any dictator’s playbook. It’s worth reporting on things like that to remind us what’s going on.

supercargo ,

It’s worth reporting on things like that to remind us what’s going on.

Oh for sure.
No intention of discouraging that at all 👍

Remember when a huge coalition of people wanted RBG to retire? And then she didn’t, and those people took it as courage or some such other virtue?

Crikeste ,

I only remember people being so pissed that she didn’t, they celebrated when she died. I don’t remember anyone who wanted her to step down calling it ‘courageous’ when she didn’t.

notanaltaccount ,

There’s a herd mentality that often overrides practical thinking, along with the desire not to offend.

I think for RBG she had worked so hard to get there as a woman, and she probably felt like men don’t retire from the role just to please political concerns so why should she? Could she see the mess the country is in, she would have retired.

Blackmist ,

Fucking hate when you get “too old” out of people for one side but not the other.

All these fossils should have been sent to the farm years ago.

Max age for starting a term should be 70. In most places you can’t be in control of a car without regular tests when you reach that age, yet you can be in control of the largest nuclear arsenal on Earth if you can still tell the difference between a cow and a horse.

sp3tr4l , in State Farm seeking 30% rate hike for California homeowners

Climate change fueled wildfires cause home and rental insurance rates to surge; State Farm solvency in question.

There! Fixed the headline. Journalism is so hard!

555_1 ,

Well, when the media is owned by the same people who own the insurance companies, the headlines tend to be soft.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It’s going to be true in parts of the country without wildfires too. For the second summer in a row, we had a devastating storm come through with 80mph+ shear winds which destroyed half the trees in the neighborhood. Obviously they fell on houses and cars. The power was out for a good day and a half and then went out for a good 10 hours again yesterday (we were gone for most of that one thankfully). This morning, a water main broke and I doubt it’s coincidence, so we’re under a 24-hour boil order now. We lost two of our own trees and it cost $3200 to get them taken care of. One hit the neighbors’ garage, but apparently their insurance will have to cover that. Insurance doesn’t cover downed trees. How long before they start raising our rates because of these storms causing home damage?

Oh no! They might figure out what’s true is not in China’s favor!

IndustryStandard , in U.S. proposed new language in effort to reach Gaza hostage-ceasefire deal

The article states Hamas did not accept the recent ceasefire deal. Didn’t Israel reject it?

anon_8675309 , in ‘The Movement to Convince Biden to Not Run Is Real’

It’s too late. They should have listened when we all said that before. But MMW, if they switch now they’ll not win in November. Stay the course and there’s a squeak of a chance.

Here’s the thing, if they push Biden out and pick Harris, she can’t beat Trump.

If they push Biden out and DONT pick Harris they’re literally telling the public that this presidency is not legitimate.

EatATaco ,

If they push Biden out and DONT pick Harris they’re literally telling the public that this presidency is not legitimate.

The rest of your post makes sense, but if they choose a new person to run they aren’t admitting that this presidency is not legitimate. How the fuck do you even get yourself to this point? And how does this nonsense even have any upvotes?

anon_8675309 ,

Because the DNC would be literally saying neither are competent to do the job.
