I can’t speak for others but I’ve come to see the Less Wrong / hardline rationalist crowd as having had some interesting ideas despite the Sam Bankman Fried of it all. Rationalwiki can be rather snarky, but can be a good resource.

I was content to damn them with faint praise and save everyone the hassle. EY is a reasonably good writer who repackaged a lot of good ideas (Kahneman et al) and came up with a lot of less impressive original ideas (all the parts you’ve highlighted, many more). His most enjoyable work was fiction.

UN votes to back Palestinian membership, prompting Israeli envoy to shred charter (www.theguardian.com)

The UN general assembly has voted overwhelmingly to back the Palestinian bid for full UN membership, in a move that signalled Israel’s growing isolation on the world stage amid global alarm over the war in Gaza and the extent of the humanitarian crisis in the strip. The move drew an immediate rebuke from Israel. Its envoy to...

They must have done something to it, because Wikipedia puts its max range as 680 miles.

We aren’t talking about the weight of the payload though. Don’t you need a fairly hefty bomb to meaningfully damage a refinery?

If the answer is no, I would love to see this strategy implemented in a longer ranged plane. Russia’s main tank production factory is about 2000 miles from the nominal Ukrainian border.

The ethos of neutrality isn’t in itself an invitation to drag the neutral position in your direction with increasingly extreme views. It’s unfair to say Switzerland is “aligning itself with Europe” and instead say Europe is less extremist.

Clem was a good man, and a genius. But within him, there was a seed of something else. His servant Banaida believed in him and dedicated his life to their work. After the Scourge of Clementor, he made the choice to use their research to mutilate himself. His body became a mighty steed to lead him into battle. This time, their research would be used for good: to redeem what was left of breakfast, and the memory of his friend.

Hitting a target nobody else can, that’s skill. But it takes genius to hit a target nobody else even saw.

A Loyal Israel Ally, Germany Shifts Tone as the Toll in Gaza Mounts (www.nytimes.com)

Days after Hamas launched its Oct. 7 attacks on Israel, Germany’s chancellor, Olaf Scholz, was one of the first Western leaders to arrive in Tel Aviv. Standing beside the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, he declared that Germany had “only one place — and it is alongside Israel.”...

In trying to research some kind of response, I stumbled across the “Haavara agreement”. Surprising that some Nazis seemed open to the idea of Zionism as part of their goals. Even more surprising that Israel is not even offering such a bargain to Palestinians. Vae victus, Bibi?

I haven’t been able to play it entirely blind, which is a flaw, but it has led me to view this gameplay more as a form of authorship. You save scum and you try again because that’s not the story you’re trying to tell. I don’t save scum games that are less storylike, because the game is traditionally the gameplay. With tabletop RPGs, the story is the game. This is an interesting middle ground.

Really I just miss games that are intensely and deeply “written”…Like Arcanum, Morrowind, or Disco Elysium. I want a game that is actually several books encased in game software. BG3 is close, but I want something even denser. I’ll be so gratified if Larian is on the same page.

Good. Let this one marinate. The modding community has barely begun to show what’s possible with this game. Over time, all this will only feed the appetite for similar quality, and hopefully make a dent in industry trends.

This has nothing to do with climate change, except for the likely possibility that billions of climate displaced people will (through no fault of their own) fuel xenophobia across the globe by their mere presence throughout the next century, potentially resulting in several holocausts that our children’s children will be dealing with.
