In Germany it’s normal to discuss politics in school, is even part of the curriculum. It’s just highly prohibited to discuss parties.

trolololol ,

Discuss politics for 40 hours without mentioning a party

The American mind cannot comprehend this

justme ,

You are allowed to mention them and explain what they officially stand for, we even made roleplays, to simulate how the parliament works (the class was distributed into parties according to the distribution of Parliament at that time and everybody tried to pass a law), it’s too tricky for me to explain the fineprint in english , sorry ;)

captainlezbian ,

It is in America too. I had to debate shit like gay marriage in high school. We even have mandatory civics classes that teach you how the government works and my teacher told us how jury nullification works and why you should never talk to cops

Mirshe ,

We sure do NOT have universally mandatory civics, not anymore. I graduated in 09 and my school district didn’t teach anyone anything beyond the basics of the voting system.

I’m too tired to look it up, but I remember someone saying that resilience or grit was one of the best indicators of success. Someone replied that actually the best indicator of success is if you came from wealth.

yogthos OP ,

loonsun ,

Also grit is an over hyped and under delivered construct of human cognition that really is only spoken of seriously nowadays by people trying to sell you something

www.apa.org/news/apa/2020/gritty-truth

funkless_eck ,

grit makes me think of Bukowski novels like Post Office. Just a bunch of dudes laboring to look like they’re working hard to please the boss, rather than to do the labor.

xthexder ,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

Personally grit makes me think of literal sand. Or dirt in general. It’s something you wash off the first chance you get. Not exactly something to be celebrated.

MonkeMischief ,

Lol sure, resilience and grit are great markers of success!..Provided you can afford enough resilience and grit until you succeed! Lol

deathbird ,

I’m sure grit + wealth is far better than either alone. It’s really probably grit + wealth + connections + luck.

Grift + wealth works even better.

lud , (edited ) in Chad VLC

I just discovered something that VLC REALLY didn’t like to play. A 4K50fps JPEG2000 YUV444 12bit lossless ~48 GB video that was only 1 minute long.

To be fair the bitrate of the video is insane at ~5700 Mbit/s. The bitrate is so insane that you should really consider using an NVME drive for playback.

MPC-HC could kinda play it but only with extreme stutter and lag. My CPU (Ryzen 9 5900x) was completely maxed out.

I think you need hardware acceleration for a video like this.

sherlockholmez ,

Where can I try this

lud , (edited )

Here: www.svt.se/open/en/content/

I downloaded “natural complexity” or something like that. Unfortunately FTP downloads are limited to 100 Mbit/s so downloads can take a while. Imo they should make a torrent.

notthebees ,

Certain programs can do multithreaded downloads on ftp servers. Winscp is one that can do it. Idk about other software

stebo02 ,
@stebo02@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I think you need hardware acceleration for a video like this.

ok but why would anyone have a video like that

Belgdore ,

Maybe some kind of super slow motion high resolution type thing?

name_NULL111653 ,

Yeah I could definitely see this for slo-mo and data recording in an actual laboratory setting that requires it to be as accurate as humanly possible. Idk if this is a standard though I’m not a scientist.

stebo02 ,
@stebo02@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

but if you’re gonna watch it in slow motion anyways then why isn’t it saved as a slow video that is much longer?

ulterno ,
@ulterno@lemmy.kde.social avatar

Deleted by creator.

lud ,

You can read more about why and how it was made here: www.svt.se/open/en/content/

It’s basically intended to test encoding and stuff like that.

AVincentInSpace ,

Forget playback. How was that video file recorded? How do you even store data that fast, let alone encode it?

ulterno ,
@ulterno@lemmy.kde.social avatar

1 Terrabyte RAM with a 64GB RAM Drive perhaps?

lud , (edited )

You can read more about why and how it was made here: www.svt.se/open/en/content/

The only place I could find where I could kinda play the video is inside Davinci resolve, but it doesn’t look how I would like it to. Probably due to the apparent lack of HDR support in Resolve on Windows (unless you have a separate TV connected to the PC somehow.

AVincentInSpace ,

Ohhhhhh. It’s a video decoder torture test. “If your app can play this it can play anything” sort of deal. That makes sense.

Also makes sense that VLC puked.

lud ,

I think it’s more of a test for encoding, not sure if you are really supposed to try and play it in an app.

DacoTaco , (edited )
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

Vlc has hardware acceleration afaik. I think its more a case of the ffmpeg codec not supporting it yet because what the actual fuck haha

lud ,

Haha, that’s fair 😂

gentooer ,

Yeah, I think it’s a good idea to try ffplay if VLC (or mpv) fail.

lud , (edited )

I get similar results with ffplay compared to MPC-HC. I unfortunately haven’t been able to get proper hardware acceleration to work anywhere.

Or maybe it does work and it’s still bottlenecked by the CPU somehow.

deadly4u ,

JPEG2000 = not lossless

lud , (edited )

JPEG2000 supports both. That’s why I specifically said that the video is lossless

The quantized model you can run locally works decently and they can’t read any of it, which is nice.

I use that one specifically huggingface.co/…/Meta-Llama-3-8B-Instruct-Q4_K_M.…

If you’re looking for a relatively user-friendly software to use it, you can look at GPT4All (open source) or LM Studio.

passepartout ,

If you’re ready to tinker a bit i can recommend Ollama for the backend and Open web UI for the frontend. They can also both run on the same machine.

The advantage is that you can use your GPU to compute, which is a lot faster.

Norgur ,

It's... Uh... About girls in short school uniforms in tanks...and the girls are all very... Uh pretty in a, let's say, stimulating way, but it's not a problem because in reality they aren't underage girls but five thousand year old dragons. They usually fight for way over two seasons per fight and yell everything they are doing loudly.
Come on, you have to know that manga!

Hey!

Girls und Panzer is an entirely wholesome experience and I won’t let anyone disagree!

In 5 sentences, explain the specific mindset that lead to the Franco-prussian waron the Prussian side and explain how this mindset shaped the Prussian culture.

The Spitfire totally rocked World War II with its sleek design and superior agility, making it the ultimate aerial ace. Unlike the clunky Messerschmidt BF109, the Spitfire could outmaneuver its foes with ease, like a ninja in the sky. Its Rolls-Royce engine gave it the power to soar higher and faster, leaving the BF109 trailing in its wake. Plus, the Spitfire had style for days, with its iconic elliptical wings and badass British flair. When it comes to dogfights, the Spitfire was the undisputed champ, leaving the BF109 eating its dust every time.

MacNCheezus ,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

That’s a long time ago. Didn’t that happen in the 90s?

Anticorp ,

The 90’s weren’t that long ago to some of us. But yes, in the 80’s and 90’s they rallied hard against music, and in the 90’s and early 2000’s against video games. Something positive did come out of it though. Music albums and video games didn’t have maturity ratings before all of that campaigning from the Christian Coalition. As a parent it’s nice to have a rating flag, so you know to check the content and see if you think it’s appropriate for your children.

MacNCheezus ,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

My brother in Christ, I don’t know what planet you live on, but here on Earth, that was 30 years ago no matter where you live. And to my knowledge, none of the games and/or bands actually got cancelled because of it except on an individual basis (i.e. if you parents forbid you to have them at home). But in that case, we simply went to a friend’s house to play or listen to them there, so I’m not sure that this is really something worth getting all worked up over.

Anticorp ,

1990 was 34 years ago, but 1999 was only 25 years ago. When you get older, 25 years doesn’t seem like that long ago. I’m not sure if you’re implying that I’m getting worked up in your last sentence, but I’m not. I simply stated an observation. As far as the Christian Coalition, yes, they got really worked up.

Tons of albums were banned. 2 Live Crew had almost every one of their albums banned at one point or another. License to Ill by the Beasty Boys was banned. Everything from Too Short was banned. Tons of music was banned either from the radio, the record stores, or both. People went to jail over it. It was a big deal. Thankfully a lot of those bands sued and appealed, and moved the meter for artistic expression considerably, from then forwards.

has no proof to debunk it

Yeah, because you can’t prove a negative. He doesn’t need to debunk it, only to provide an alternative explanation which is more likely. Occam’s razor.

GiveMemes ,

There’s inifinite examples of when occams razor doesn’t hold up though. It’s a useful tool, but by no means an end all be all.

Zagorath ,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

Occam’s razor won’t get you to the correct conclusion for all possible combinations of truth values and evidence, but it is always the best process to follow. You might end up getting new evidence later that means you update your belief, even update it to believe in something which previous evidence meant Occam’s razor lead you to dismiss that conclusion. But it helps you arrive at the best conclusion based on current evidence.

DmMacniel ,

So was it a cart slap? No. Was the device and or cart faulty? No. Was the constructions nearby the cause? No.

We only know that something flipped the bit. So why not spice this freak accident up by saying that cosmic rays were the culprit?

Zagorath ,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

Because assuming that is a way bigger assumption than something like “faulty hardware”, especially since this guy has stories about other things that we know are faulty hardware.

DrJaska ,

The device was faulty though.

Source: youtu.be/vj8DzA9y8ls

Commiunism ,

I also bought into the bit flip theory but it was confirmed that the hardware was somewhat faulty which is an infinitely more likely cause than cosmic rays. There’s also the fact that there aren’t any bits that could be flipped which would perfectly reproduce the glitch.

Piemanding ,

I would be angry too if I have already done lots of research trying to figure this out and the top videos and articles talking about it all say the least likely thing is what actually happened.

This is asinine. Trump has literally threatened to use dictatorial methods on his first day in office.

OurToothbrush ,

Logical ,

Since when is Joe Rogan bad enough to warrant getting shot in the first place? I feel like the guy has said some bad (and far more dumb) things but it’s not like he poses any kind of danger to anyone does he? I know this is besides the point, but murder is far from proportional to anything (that I am aware of) that Joe has been known to do. With that said I don’t really know much about what he’s been up to for the past 5 years or so.
