Hey now, as an older than 40 who has never been reasonably able to afford rent, don’t forget us olds.
Honestly, same shit was happening to Gen X, which is why everyone was so aloof and “over it,” just more of them managed to be brainwashed than millennials and Gen Z. It was a lot harder to fight against the indoctrination when literally every stupid fuck around you would parrot this shit until their deathbed, and their generation massively outnumbered yours.
Now Gen Z and millennials are more populous, and the script has indeed been flipped.
Bit over 40 here stressing about my next place to live. It’s getting so expensive. When I started thus latest job I was a bit desperate due ro a year without work, and I basically asked for pay that would allow me to afford a single room apartment at the time. I’ve had raises since, and it still feels like I can barely afford the same thing. One of my uncles thinks my opinion doesn’t matter because I don’t own a home, so I’m “unsuccessful”, and we should listen to successful home owners like them.
It is generally a psychological tactic to make you publicly seem innocent. The typical resting-face mugshot make people not seem as friendly, and therefore guilty.
lol trump seems to have embraced the flip side of that coin, looking grumpier than ever. Obviously it didn’t interfere with his schedule too much though considering he obviously got that fresh spray tan done the morning of
The issue is when it comes to trial it does the exact opposite. I’ve heard time and time again to be nothing but stoic if you ever get booked because the prosecution will claim you smiling in your mugshot shows you have no remorse.
Absolutely. This is 100% a political prosecution of political opponents of the those in power. As such, it will be a rallying point for those who oppose this abuse of power.
They’re the reason on most leases there is a lead paint disclosure. That person clearly ignored it and enjoyed the sweet dumbing flavors. Or they just a goddamn Nazi
Eh, whatsapp isn’t ideal and its owner is one of the big devils of today, but it’s the only way to send and receive instant messages among billions of people. I despise it, but it’s the only way I can contact people. Needless to say, they don’t give a single flying fuck about privacy.
Whatsapp outages make people migrate to Telegram for 1-2 days at most, nobody ends up staying there. Signal? I’ve only ever met three other people in RL who have even heard of it, and I work in IT.
A more apt comparison would be to languages. Whatsapp is english: clunky, weird, full of nonsense, but it’s what “everyone talks”. Signal would probably be lojban or esperanto.
According to Statista, 41% of 'muricans use it, which is a rather low number. Meanwhile, Brazil is the whatsapp country, in terms of percentage. In total numbers, that’d be India, as it’s the most populous country in the world.
Aside from needing a phone, I really don’t see the issue with SMS. For sending quick messages to people directly, is there really a better tool? You (most likely) already have a phone plan, you already have a phone, and your phone is always on you. Everyone you’re trying to contact is in the same boat, even people who are technically illiterate. All phones with phone plans support SMS, unless there’s weird plans I don’t know about.
When it comes to more complex needs (group management, e2e encryption, etc) other services are better of course. I don’t use SMS to text my group of friends, it’s really not well suited for the job.
That is a huge one for me. Yes, I have a phone. But I spend most of my waking time in front of a desktop or laptop. With Whatsapp, Telegram or Signal I can read and write messages from the computer, copy/paste text to the documents I am writing, and send and download files. SMS are more limited.
I use SMS for work. It’s the one we all know what message we send through will present the same on the other side regardless of phone. A big downside is that it’s limited to the phone. Messenger and WhatsApp can be read on laptops.
I don’t disagree, but that wasn’t my point. Everyone has access to SMS messaging. Not everyone has an internet-based messaging app, and those who do are split among several different services.
As a Signal user and an Esperantist I agree. They both require a somewhat curious mind for you to bump into them in the first place. Unless you have that friend/relative who always recommends weird stuff for you (to ignore).
Yeah, but I disagree. Signal doesn’t require that by design, it’s just as easy to use as WhatsApp (unlike something like Matrix or Lemmy). It’s just as easy to switch and has a better privacy. And while I even don’t use it much, I actually know quite some people on it (majority of which is non-techy).
Why would it even be weird or anything? I only use Signal and its pretty much the same as whatsapp on the outside…just in blue. The only reason people dont use it is because “eVerYonE hAs WhAtsApP” and they dont bother. 20 useless crap apps but 2 messengers is too much
I know you know, but I have to point out: their public relations is literally a poop emoji. Which is possibly the most juvenile proof imaginable for the failure of Elmo’s delusions of adequacy. He just has a lot of money.
This is a good “I am Very Smart” candidate which surprisingly doesn’t seem to have an active community here on Lemmy yet…and I might be just fine with that now that I think about it. It seemed like half the posts there on Reddit either were mean spirited, called out the wrong side in an argument, or were actually smart.
Yeah I don’t think anything of value is lost if we don’t recreate all they bully subreddits.
They’re unhealthy for their subjects, of course, because imagine seeing a post you made when you were younger on one of those subs and reading all the comments about how terrible a person you are
But they’re also unhealthy for the subscribers and readers - rage scrolling will fuck you up
Yeah I don’t think anything of value is lost if we don’t recreate all they bully subreddits.
Hard agree. They attract people who like feeling superior to others. You can imagine where things will inevitably lead when you put a bunch of them in the same place.
Selfishness and greed. Anyone that stands up stands alone, and the others are quick to lick a boot as they grovel for scraps. For some inconceivable reason too many consider this preferable to standing together and working to make things better.
It’s not selfishness and greed so often as it is fear and ignorance. Education remedies the ignorance and steels people against the fear that keeps them from working together against a seemingly more powerful force.
North American here. Funny how it’s very much less “which is it?” And more “Yeah. Basically.”
We’ve been culturally domesticated to not cause trouble for our bosses / schools / etc. If the State steps in after you cause trouble for enterprise, it’s usually to kick you back into your place.
We might not live in a State dictatorship, but that only matters so far, because that State enables many tiny, petty dictatorships that more directly affect your life and run amok unopposed.
Somehow people accept petty tyranny in everything from corporations to universities to shifts at the burger joint. They’ll get all riled up that some politician they never met is bawking about foreign policy, but their tail is tucked firmly when their company tells them they can’t get sick days and arriving a minute late is a fireable offense.
Many have bought the lies of rugged individualism and competition. “An insult to one is…well, that really sucks for you but I told you to just stay quiet. I’m just working hard doing what I’m told.”
Like someone said before me: Even the most rebellious in us think twice about making our move, because many people simply think “That’s how it is.” And don’t believe it can get any better.
There’s not a lot of examples of collective action winning in recent history, so a lot of people don’t even know how to begin to push back in the first place, besides writing an angry tweet or two.
A professor at my university tried that, but the students quite quickly made a huge fuss, got the principals office involved, and the universities lawyers informed said professor that what she was doing was illegal, and that she should stop before she got any more trouble. She stopped.
Possibly a poor translation from my side: I’m referring to the “head office” of the university, i.e. the group of people under the direct leadership of the principal, who have the highest administrative authority at the university.
My first WTF moment with British English was walking into a restaurant & the hostess asked: “are you alright?”. “Do I have a bloody nose?” I quaked. Turns out it was just how folks say “what’s up?” as a hello there.
Racism is never acceptable, regardless of the target. All people deserve to be treated with respect, dignity, and equality. While some may view British people as privileged or powerful, that does not justify discrimination or prejudice against them.
Here are a few key reasons why you should avoid being racist towards British people:
Racism is Unethical and Harmful
Racism, by definition, involves prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their race or ethnicity. This is unethical and causes real harm to individuals and society as a whole. Racism can lead to social division, resentment, and even violence.
British People are Diverse
The United Kingdom is home to a diverse population with people of various ethnicities, religions, and backgrounds. Stereotyping or generalizing all British people as a single homogeneous group is inaccurate and unfair. Many British citizens are immigrants or have immigrant backgrounds themselves.
Racism Violates Human Rights
Racism violates fundamental human rights, such as the right to equality, dignity, and non-discrimination. The United Nations International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) is a treaty that condemns racism and requires states to take action against it.
Racism Harms Individuals
Experiencing racism can have severe negative impacts on an individual’s mental health, self-esteem, and overall well-being. It can lead to feelings of isolation, anger, and depression. No one should have to endure discrimination or prejudice based on their race or ethnicity.
Racism is Counterproductive
Racism is ultimately counterproductive and holds society back. It prevents people from working together, learning from each other, and building a more just and equitable world. Embracing diversity and inclusion is essential for progress and prosperity.
In conclusion, racism towards British people, or any group, is unethical, harmful, and counterproductive. We must strive to treat all people with respect, empathy, and fairness, regardless of their race or ethnicity. By rejecting racism and embracing diversity, we can build a better future for everyone.
I decided to stop making excuses a few years ago and just say when I’m not feeling socially up to it or there are too many people. Positive reactions literally across the board, haven’t had a single weird conversation. I’d recommend it.
I’ve also found honesty to be the best way, with a few exceptions, like… because of my outward appearance and things thus assumed, a lot of people take my honesty -very- personally when really it has nothing to do with them.
But… that’s a really good reason for me to get them out of my life asap, so it kinda still works out.
Thank you. This is such a breath of fresh air. In all cases I prefer a simple answer, when organising an event with multiple people where I want to get ideas on numbers for planning.
• Yes - great! See you there
• No (with or without a reason) - fantastic! We’ve all got our own stuff going on or reasons why we don’t want to go!
• Maybe, with a reason why, or when you would be able to give an answer - cool!
• Maybe, with no further explanation - ugh. I’ll just assume you’re not coming and don’t care.
Maybe with no explanation is the cowards way out. Especially when “no sorry, I’m busy!” is the standard white lie.
“No because I don’t want to (don’t feel socially up to it)” is the hero’s response and I salute you 🫡
It’s like I’ve told a number of my bosses in the past: you have to treat the people making your money for you well, or they just fuck off. They never listen, and everyone always just fucks off. I’m a soothsayer!
They figured out that that statement isn’t true when they control the entire market through insider fixing and oligopolistic practices. They also figured out that the average person’s tolerance for eating shit is much higher than previously thought.
Hey, the more tranquility in the market, the more you get investors looking to enter it and extract things. Your goal should be to make it a hell scape for all involved and with an acceptable margin if you want to maintain your vice president position.
No kidding, denuvo made me stop buying games every time because I just detest it and what it stands for. Also, boggles resources way too much (and no, having a root kit is a no no for me). But more importantly, single player games with denuvo is the ultimate low.
The fact denuvo can make a 20+ year old port run like garbage is especially impressivly bad. It’s sometimes hard to avoid, but usually it gets dropped because it’s a subscription a publisher has to pay. Patient gamers just have to be patient.
I recently went installed GTA SA and my CPU was running at freaking 20% with graphics cranked up. I remember when I played it around 2010 by potato PC was lagging and freezing. But anyway the game still rocks after 24 damn years and it only requires 4-5 GB
I’m still using a GTX 1070 and none of the games I play has had issues yet. The most recent games I’ve played on it were hitman 3, cult of the Lamb and Cross code. None of the games are that demanding but they were all good. I guess I just don’t play AAA titles (although hitman 3 is AAA but older).
