Gmail allow using a + to create faux-labels

I wonder how they handle gmail addresses with dots as you can put dot in anywhere and it still will redirect to your email.

I’ve setup (for few services which don’t allow + sign) emails like [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] and they all come to my inbox.

1000ms delay seems to be little too much to my liking, changed browser.tabs.cardPreview.delayMs to 500 and it feels much better.

Preview is pretty short for some reason, it might be related to my monitor (32:9) aspect ratio?

Just out of curiosity, how much people still use SMS? I can’t remember last time I sent SMS.

Here in Finland we use mainly Whatsapp, FB Messenger, Telegram or Signal for messaging. Almost no one I know has sent SMS in the last 10 years.

For voice calls, most use regular phone calls here, it just works better (and VoLTE/VoWiFi is great addition to sound quality). Apps are only used when you are making video calls.

As for messages, it’s much easier to send images/videos via whatsapp/signal than it’s via SMS. + replies/reactions. Probably main reason why people use apps instead SMS (even while many/most of our plans include unlimited data/sms/calls). RCS added those features IIRC, but why switch to another solution while apps works just fine and most of people already are used to Whatsapp 🤷‍♂️

And most of the people here has Whatsapp installed, so usually you don’t have to guess what app to use :P

And US still has very expensive data plans compared to Finland (I pay 21e/month for unlimited 200mbps data, calls, sms). That could also be one factor why SMS is still used there so much 🤔

Just to be clear, never said that I used all of those. Just made quick list of most popular apps to use here :P If I had to guess, over 95% of people here just use WhatsApp.

They all have pretty much same functionality what traditional sms is missing.

Hello, I’m looking for a tablet for occasional use for streaming when travelling. I don’t want to spend much a still only get used once a month or so, just want something that can play netflix and bbc iplayer and isn’t on an ancient version of android. Any suggestions? Ideally second hand options as not fussed about it...

Custom ROM has high change to break Widevine DRM L1. And ex. Netflix has better streaming quality on L1 than it has on L3 (1080p vs 480p). At least this was the case few years ago.

I personally got couple use cases.

Work profile: I can split my works stuff and personal very easily (and for security as personal apps cannot see or work with work stuff usually).

This also helps if you want to get same app installed multiple times. Ex. I could install pokemon go and use two profiles same time with split screen.

“true” secondary profile: like in desktop OS where you can create multiple profiles, this will “boot” phone to new profile and it has own partition and apps. Cannot interact with other “true” profiles.

I use that with my child if I hand phone to her. She cannot get to my stuff (not even images or other data) and only has her stuff available.

I don’t have work number currently. And I very rarely call with my phone to coworkers.

You could do that, but you would miss some of the features. Ex. I use same browser on normal and work profile, but I have two icons (one for work, one for normal) to open browser. When I’m on my work profile, I’m logged in with my work Google account and it doesn’t interfere with my normal profile browser. Same thing for Gmail, calendar, contacts, Google docs/sheets etc. And if I ever want to get rid of works stuff on my phone, I just delete work profile.

And for security reason when normal profile apps cannot interfere with work profile apps in any way. Ex. I can have one password manager on my work profile and another on normal profile and they cannot share information in any way and I can keep my work and private passwords separate.

And like I previously said, this works for entertainment use also, as I can have two instances of same app with different login information (like pokemon go)

What happens if user spends over 3 minutes to write the post after uploading image?

Would user create a post with broken image link? or would there be some kind of “call home” API call on create post page so image wouldn’t be removed? (which has risk that API call could be replicated by a bot)

Meta discontinues Messenger Lite for Android, it will be unavailable after Sep 18. Users need to install regular Messenger app instead (beehaw.org)

I have not found any news article on this on a whim. Because my friends and family, I need to use Facebook Messenger, and Messenger Lite was a OK client - lightweight, no unnecessary features, etc., compared to the regular Messenger app....

IIRC, that doesn’t block cookies, it just blocks cookie warnings.

I personally use Consent-O-Matic nowdays.

I don’t care about cookies sometimes broke website.

Never had that issue with Consent-O-Matic which automatically rejects all cookies while still making site usable.

At least with firefox beta, you can create your own collection of extensions and use those. That’s what I do and I can install any extension.

Bonus negative points for games that only check DLC after that button press

Don’t forget games that have you manually press button to dismiss and unlocked DLC.

It’s very fun with games that you buy after few years and have hundred DLC (ex. fighting games) 😅

Usually takes few minutes of just button pressing to dismiss all new dlcs

Almost every professional developer that I know uses dark mode. Maybe 1% uses light mode and those are people who code in legacy environment.

And for web, you have Dark Reader 🤷 so no bright lights when browsing web.

Personally I’ve been using lot of dbeaver for my database needs (mysql, oracle, postgress, apache drill, sqlite) which has a dark mode.

It should also work with sql server, but I’m not sure if is it’s missing some of the tools people need 🤔

DataGrip is a very good choice also. And JetBrains products are very good, if you can get a license, I would usually recommend those.

But I just prefer dbeaver because it’s free to use, so I don’t have to worry about license at work or at home 😄

Got one when I got my Samsung Fold 3. I liked smart charging on my old OnePlus but Samsung doesn’t have that… Only way is to limit it to 85% or charge to full 100%. And I rather use full 100% of my battery because I use it a lot.

Last time I checked my battery health was still “good” after 2 years of use (via Samsung diagnostic tool).

I’ve set my chargie charge to 85% and then recharge only when battery drops 10% or more. And at 5:00 it charges once to 100% so I have my full battery at morning

Couple of times in last two years it hasn’t charged up to 100% (stopped to 85%). Don’t know why, but it hasn’t been huge issue.

Don’t know if charge helps with battery, but at least it doesn’t make it worse 🤷

Yep, as I said, only way is to limit it to 85%, but I want to charge full 100%. So that’s where chargie comes in. It only charges to 100% once and shuts down charging.

Same here. Or I was until I dropped my Fold 3 to repair center to replace the inner screen protector. As they peel out the screen protector, they broke the inner screen 😅

…so currently I’m waiting until they get new screen (and IIRC, screen includes new batteries) and replace that under warranty.

And because of their error, I basically get almost brand new phone (as inner screen and battery are two parts what could die first), so I’m not complaining 😬.

And I’m not in hurry to replace Fold 3 just yet 😄

Phones should have 2 USB C ports

One should be at the bottom one at the top. I understand space on the phone is a premium but a second port would make the phone so much more usable. Wired headphones, flash drives, camera modules, speaker modules, keyboards, even connection to a TV, all could be used while charging. It’s a shame it’s not a thing, USB is...
