Because the Australian Teslas and Volvos are made in China. It’s a Chinese EV. Volvo is owned by a Chinese Company.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

Plus Tesla’s for the Australian market are built in China. Heck, I think some of the new BMWs are built in China now as well.

What is it about the text messages and emails sent by older people that make me feel like I'm having a stroke?

Maybe they're used to various shortcuts in their writing that they picked up before autocorrect became common, but these habits are too idiosyncratic for autocorrect to handle properly. However, that doesn't explain the emails I've had to decipher that were typed on desktop keyboards. Has anyone else younger than 45 or so felt similarly frustrated with geriatrics' messages?

It’s about as annoying as young people abandoning any and all punctuation entirely the amount of people that will write an entire paragraph and not use a single period is obscene if you can’t bother to organize your thoughts in the most minimal way I’m going to assume you have nothing of worth to say and just won’t read it and frankly, if what you’re saying is so boiler plate you don’t need punctuation then you really don’t have anything to add so probably just shouldn’t

Hang on hang on hang on let me spend $100,000 on consultants to tell me what I want to think.

Person who was charged and put on trial for murder died. It’s a legal term. Journalists can get sued for defamation for blatantly calling someone who is not convicted a rapist or murderer. You can safely call OJ an armed robber and kidnapper though.

That’s why the talking heads on tv tend to dance around the terminology and say “allegedly” and “accused of”

I live in a small unit that had dusty ultra-compacted dirt around the house that was called a lawn. I broke the soil with a hoe, threw a few bags of soil mix down and planted some moss I harvested growing wild down the laneway. 2 years later the ground is mostly covered in a spongey moss. Give it a few more years it’ll be completely covered and thick.

It requires virtually no mowing and needs little water. Apparently growing moss is even good for air and ground water purification. Not sure how much purifying it’s doing but it’s good to know I’m doing my little part.

If you have a small yard, grow moss.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

I think your you got your righty tighty lefty loosely muddled up.

“Hi, uh good morning, is this the place where I say my thoughts out loud and potentially put myself and my family in danger?”

“Yes it is.”

"Oh thanks. Well can you write ‘I can’t wait for all the Palestinians (including women and children) are shot or starved to death so we can bulldoze their homes and communities to build some luxury condos for my billionaire buddies.’ "

“…naire buddies. All done sir, was their anything else?”

“Not at the moment thank you madam.”

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

That or Saudi Riyal. People are going to vote for this guy?

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

I don’t know your situation, but investing is riskier than a savings account, that currently yeilds a high interest rate.

If you need an emergency fund, make one in a high yield savings account first. My rough number is $10,000. “You’re missing out on the gains” is an incredibly shortsighted view people have in the stock market. “Gains” are made over 20 year periods.

As a primary (elementary) teacher I once had a grade 2 kid with scolded fingers from her mum. My principal ordered me to go home and paid for a taxi that day. Fortunately I have never crossed paths with that mother again.

Living in apartments.

In a lot of cities and towns living in apartments is seen as something that young adults who are renting short term do, and definitely not families or older couples.

Living in an apartment is considerably cheaper for my situation. I drive so much less, I pay for less power, and I have all this parkland around me.

I’m a car guy and I don’t have a garage, that’s annoying, but I commute by escooter now and drive on the weekends. It’s much better.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

That’s a great question. What I would say is the wheels of justice turn painfully slowly.

I am sure Antony Blinken is well aware of domestic concerns over the wellbeing of Gazans, the unfortunate reality is any big decision against or at Israel will come with negative consequences.

The path of least resistance might be allowing the Israeli’s to squeeze out their own leader democratically. Is that the best way? Well, probably? Not always?

A pacifist may look to the Vietnam War, Libya or Iran and say action was injustice, an activist might look at the Rwandan Genocide and say pacifism was injustice. Diplomacy has to do it’s thing.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

I hope the police and everyone who ignored her pleas are reminded of her death everyday of the week. Name names.

The royal family brings in a net positive amount of revenue of you account for receipts from added tourism and spending. The expenses for shipping around the US President for example is another story.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

They’re minors. In the UK and most of the developed world, you cannot give life without parole to a minor.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

Both apparently showed no sympathy during the trial. Denying they did it and accusing the other.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

Teachers should be paid 50% more. If you want good teachers to stay, you have to walk the walk, otherwise you’ll get a perpetual cycle of overwhelmed grads being bossed around by rusted-on bottom teer heads.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

In Asia they sell thousands of those Japanese and Korean mini trucks and vans, but they are designed for roads 80kmh and below. In Australia we have the Hilux 2wd utes which are small and bare bones. But for every one of those, Toyota sell 20 HiAce vans.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

If practical a trailer is a good option. Get a tow hitch and just rent a trailer when you need. Moved house with my Suzuki and a 6x4 enclosed trailer.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

Driving 1.5miles twice a day everyday is a sure way to drain the car battery and multiply the wear and tear on the engine. Short trips are fine occasionally, but sooner rather than later the check engine light will pop up.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

I’ve owned many cars and ran a van hire company.

Look at the owners manual in your car, and it will say trips less than a couple of miles are considered severe duty, and the oil needs to be changed more often. Your can get condensation in the engine that can break down the oil faster.

Cold starts are where most of the wear and tear occurs.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

Are you saying that industries such as the automotive industry exploit nameplates born in the 60s? I thought the Charger, Challenger, Bronco, Mustang, Blazer and Ford F truck were all original names and designs.

Little light, no beds, not enough anesthesia: A view from the ‘nightmare’ of Gaza’s hospitals (apnews.com)

The state of Gaza’s hospitals: Surgeries without anesthesia and with only mobile phones for light. Vinegar from the corner store as disinfectant. 5,000 patients in a hospital built for 700, some sleeping on the floor. No power, no clean water, little fuel.

It’s so strange how people do some mental gymnastics to think that Israel is completely justified in all of their prior and current crimes against humanity.

Heck, the freakin hostages and Israelies in hospital in Israel have publically ridiculed the government and the army, hence Netanyahu is bunkered down hasn’t visited anyone.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

That’s like saying the Provisional IRA was the government of Northern Ireland. Yes they do have a political force but are better described as a paramilitary.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

No until it turns corrupt like what most of these bodies inevitably do. But I guess it’s racist to ask if there will be a framework to oversee and manage corruption.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

Yep very misleading. There’s recognition, and then there’s the advisory board question. The Yes campaign did a shoking job and alienated everyone by calling people racist who asked questions about the Voice.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

Bhp put their support behind the yes campaign. And Albo voted down the need for truth in advertising

If you have a few hundred thousand US dollars to burn, why wouldn’t you say, go on a 12 month round the world holiday?

Rent a sports car in each city in Italy and France.

Why would you buy a Lambo and continue to in rural USA?

Australia has some of the worst built houses in the western world, especially houses built in the 20th century. I think the average was 0.5 stars out of 10. Thankfully we have the most amount of solar of any country so we are offsetting the crappyness.

Deflection towards hydrogen mining. Shell UK got absolutely grilled over it, showing that it was nowhere close to carbon neutral.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

Same in Australia. I have Facebook disabled, but I’ve got messenger to keep in the loop

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

Isn’t he that trumpy guy? I have no idea

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

I use SMS for work. It’s the one we all know what message we send through will present the same on the other side regardless of phone. A big downside is that it’s limited to the phone. Messenger and WhatsApp can be read on laptops.

Georgia prosecutors have messages showing Trump's team is behind voting system breach (www.cnn.com)

Atlanta-area prosecutors investigating efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia are in possession of text messages and emails directly connecting members of Donald Trump’s legal team to the early January 2021 voting system breach in Coffee County, sources tell CNN.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

Nope. He’ll never spend a day in jail. Nothing has seemed to slow him down. He’s been effectively martyred in political history, and the longer he stays relevant, the greater chance he gets in.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

If your country is being invaded, you don’t have a choice. War is a savage and cruel phenoma. It turns people into animals. What an invading side can do to civilians under occupation is beyond comprehension. The Nanking Massacre comes to mind in modern memory.

You may regard yourself as a pacifist and in the moral high ground, the women and children who get systematically raped and mutilated through no fault other than being a trophy for monsters to use, would think of you in another view.

I know I’m being brutal with my words, but the real fucking crime is the fucking invasion. Zelensky has to do everything to defend it’s existence.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

In my country (Australia), they should increase the number of seats in government.

It hasn’t been done since the early 80s when the population was half of what it is now. Your member therefore can be more active, a smaller electorate means less emails and letters to sift through, less stress from staff, and more representative of a progressive voting base.

But this gets so easily dismissed as increasing bureaucracy and big government.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

I think your federal government will operate more effectively with say 1000 seats in the congress and 200 senators. More senators you could asume better laws will be passed quicker, corruption is less effective as it’s more expensive with more lawmakers, and factions of parties (say progressive vs moderate democrats) can band larger coalitions.

This is just my opinion though, a big government does have downsides.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

Ladders. Most serious workplace accidents in a lot of trades can be linked back to falling from a hight. Don’t be cocky when up a ladder, even little ones.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

Do they like, want the protests to continue on our something? They can’t be that stupid.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

Same for me. When RIF stopped working I went into Lemmy and haven’t went on Reddit since. The FOMO I thought I’d get isn’t there because I’m active and welcome here. I have people to connect with, and that’s what I really only wanted out of a social site like this.

UnfortunateDoorHinge ,

I guess as a user I didn’t see the back-of-house tools for mods and admins, but so far Lemmy is at least competitive. There are risks with server security and threat of being hacked, along with the size of the team.
