Cleverdawny , in Just jokes folks.

Depends on what kind of joke they’re making. Key & Peele had a lot of great comedy about Obama. SNL’s Jim Carey Biden impression was great. But conservatives are almost never funny, generally their “comedy” is about bullying someone for a perceived social transgression or physical/mental flaw.

drekly , (edited ) in "gaming is dead"

Stop playing repetitive, competitive, multiplayer games. Especially the battle royale style ones.

Oh you just played another 20 minute match where you died to someone out of nowhere at the end, possibly a cheater, shouted bullshit at the screen, didn’t win and didn’t achieve anything? Better re queue to do it again! Hey while you’re in the menus, do you want a new £15 skin? Do you want the battlepass QUICK BEFORE ITS GONE! THE SKINS WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY IF THE CONSTANT LOSSES DONT. I wonder why you’re bored and depressed with gaming.

The most popular steam games? Constant repetitive, competitive, multiplayer games. “I do the same thing with the same guns on the same map every day and I’m bored. Gaming is boring.”

competitive, multiplayer games. “I do the same thing with the same guns on the same map every day and I’m bored. Gaming is boring.”

Sounds a lot like football, except for the guns. Opposing team has new skins for every game, but the game loop is exactly same for every game, all the game. And the map, oh gods, the map! Notice the singular? Yeah, there’s actually just one map. Some background textures change, but functionally it’s always the same green rectangle with some lines drawn over.

drekly ,

And I find football boring as fuck and repetitive too, so I might be missing your point

wisplike_sustainer ,

My point, if I had one, would be that “boring, repetitive multiplayer games” are so much fun, for so many, that calling people to stop playing them is an exercise in futility.

That said, I find them un-fun, too. Mostly because I constantly get my ass kicked, but also because I enjoy slower, 4x and plot driven games more. To each their own.

deft ,

tbh I’d rather play a game like this where every round is a new experience or a different strategy than play a half baked “RPG” that holds no roleplay, no stakes, no difficulties or no strategies.

Fiivemacs ,

Pretty sure the roleplay is what you make it and they provide the environment for you to do it in. But I can understand how it’s not for everyone.

I mean that’s more of an issue with the horrific monetization of those games, their abuse of FOMO, and shit matchmaking (and/or the player’s shit skill). There’s nothing wrong with the genre itself, some people just genuinely enjoy it. There’s a reason it’s popular.

It’s been over since they blocked third party apps. I don’t know what you were fighting for, but I wanted to stay on reddit and RIF was reddit, so I fought for RIF. Now that RIF is gone, reddit is gone. There is nothing to fight for. They say “reddit beat down the protest”, but that’s a bullshit interpretation. The core of the protest just left and Reddit beat down the left overs. Sure, Reddit won in the sense that things are quiet again, but they also have a valid competition now, where they had a monopoly before.

RedditWanderer ,

Maybe spez would have turned back during the protests but after 3rd party apps officially disconnected, there was no turning back. Next is karma for sale and verified checkmarks for 8$.

I agree with this because if you were to say the whole thing verbally, you generally start with the day, the month then the year.

“It is the 9th of August in the year of our Lord 2023.”

rubythulhu ,

In the USA most people would say “august 9th”, not “the 9th of august”, which is one of the reasons mm/dd/yyyy is the standard format here

kautau ,

Which extrapolated, who the fuck would say “the September of 2024” and not “September, 2024” for example

Uvine_Umbra ,
@Uvine_Umbra@partizle.com avatar

This is actually often done when trying to be more eloquent or dramatic or add importance, like how Independence day is The 4th of July versus just saying Jily 4th.

ShunkW ,

We wouldn’t in America in most cases. I’d say it’s August 9th 2023. I honestly feel like this is such a dumb argument to have because it doesn’t matter except for communication with people who use other methods. Now metric vs imperial makes way more sense to me because the metric system is just so much easier for mathematical conversions.

RedditWanderer ,

In metric, one milliliter of water occupies one cubic centimeter, weighs one gram, and requires one calorie of energy to heat up by one degree centigrade—which is 1 percent of the difference between its freezing point and its boiling point. An amount of hydrogen weighing the same amount has exactly one mole of atoms in it. Whereas in the American system, the answer to ‘How much energy does it take to boil a room-temperature gallon of water?’ is ‘Go fuck yourself,’ because you can’t directly relate any of those quantities.

jballs ,
@jballs@sh.itjust.works avatar

I like how Europeans pretend they’re all scientific, but then still use seconds, minutes, and hours without thinking twice.

RedditWanderer ,

Lmao Europe is not the only place where they use metric (I’m not European).

Seconds are part of the metric system and are the base unit of time. Just because they didn’t define it initially doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist or makes sense. They use milliseconds and kiloseconds; minutes and hours are used for convenience but are not part of the SI

    coheedcollapse , in A dollar saved is a dollar earned

    For real though, you don’t plant your own tomatoes to save money, you plant your own tomatoes because your crop is going to taste so good that you’ll be chasing that flavor any time you’re stuck buying them from the store. Just so far beyond storebought.

    It’s the one crop I keep coming back to every year - the effort is worth it.

    electrogamerman ,

    Is it the same for all vegetables, or just tomatos?

    dominotheory ,

    It’s the same in that most fruits and vegetables you can buy at the store have been bred for quantity and shipping. Home gardeners can grow varieties that are bred for flavor. So my Nebraska Wedding Tomatoes may not survive a trip across the country with UPS, but they taste amazing. And my Double Gold raspberries don’t produce bushels, but they’re the best I’ve ever eaten. I do think I’m probably saving money growing garlic. Very low maintenance plant, and I grow enough to save what I need to plant for the next year. So some crops are pretty cost effective, but some are really for the flavor.

    LinuxSBC ,

    Not all, but most. I don’t notice much of a difference with peppers or carrots, but strawberries especially are incredible when grown from a garden and pretty tasteless when bought from a store. Tomatoes don’t have quite as significant of a difference, but they’re still much better. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten fresh beets from anywhere but a farmer’s market or my garden, so I’m not sure about them.

    BCsven ,

    More noticeable in Tomatoes, but everything is more flavourful. Potatoes are more Potatoey, leafy greens are more intense flavour, some people finding home grown romaine too strongly flavoured because they are used to it tasting like nothing

    pjwestin ,
    @pjwestin@lemmy.world avatar

    Kamala would 100% lose. Her campaign didn’t have a single victory in 2020, and she was one of the first to drop out. If the Democrats had held a primary, we might have found a candidate that could beat him, but as it stands now, our best hope is that Trump finally finishes eating himself to death before the election.

    conditional_soup ,

    I imagine that Kamala could at least win an argument with a potted plant, which is more than you could say about Biden at this point.

    pjwestin ,
    @pjwestin@lemmy.world avatar

    That was certainly the worst of it, but it didn’t get much better for him, he fumbled over a lot of his delivery. It was much harder for him though, he was using facts and figures while Trump was just saying whatever lie popped into his head.

    conditional_soup ,

    Yeah, it reminded me a lot of the Carter/Reagan debate, only if Carter had a massive concussion.

    Soulg ,

    Because he didn’t have to be careful to make sure he was right. He just said whatever anyway

    rhandyrhoads ,

    I think that’s the biggest danger with Trump. Even though he’s less with it than Biden, what comes out of his mouth sounds more coherent if you’re not concerned with the facts of the matter.

    I was a bit concerned with Biden when he would say the wrong word or trail off, but at the end of the day it’s less about who the president is and more about who they hire. I really wish the DNC had ran a different candidate.

    Old_Jimmy_Twodicks ,
    @Old_Jimmy_Twodicks@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Yeah, this is pretty painful to watch. Trump is a piece of shit, but he’s way more forceful and even somewhat coherent. Meanwhile, Biden’s just above a whisper and is somewhere between stuttering and rambling.

    Instigate ,

    If this Biden feeling ‘jacked up’, I shudder to think what he’s like when he’s not. He’s not doing a great job of spruiking his own achievements and his answers are devoid of stats or figures - likely because they weren’t able to bring notes in. He’s sadly making trump look more coherent and lively by comparison.

    toastal ,

    Zerush ,
    @Zerush@lemmy.ml avatar

    Every account need a valid mail direction, ofte als with 2FA a phone number, both pretty easy to track in the network. Every website know your ISP, your public IP, your OS and a lot of other data which they can store and sell it to third parties for commercial reasons. Never create an account if it is not essential for you.

    henfredemars ,

    Pretty sure that a company that I would otherwise write checks to with my name address and phone number already has the lion’s share of those details. My IP address and operating system are the least of my concern in that case.

    Hiding my IP address from the power company seems like a limited improvement.
