MashingBundle , in Amazon Games support is coming soon to Heroic Games Launcher
@MashingBundle@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

This is good news. I want to use this post to shout out Heroic launcher.

A small team of devs (GitHub says 150 contributors, but likely only a small percentage of that consistently works on it), made a free, open-source launcher that is VASTLY better than Epic’s piece of shit.

I mean, for real, this multi-billion dollar company can’t even properly make a basic-ass piece of software. For over three years it has been a laggy mess that bombards the bottom right of my screen with ads. No significant changes or updates that have made the launcher more usable. I deadass pirate the games epic has given me for free so I don’t have to deal with their launcher.

Many games even run better on linux with proton than on windows, due to package bundling and stuff. Though the games I play the most already have native linux support.

UnhappyCamper ,
@UnhappyCamper@kbin.social avatar

I keep hearing this, but I personally have yet to see it. Definitely most of my games run just as well on linux, but otherwise some of them are still glitchy.

Don’t get me wrong, I'll never go back to Windows, I love Linux, but what are these games that run better on Linux?

mycus ,
@mycus@kbin.social avatar

top of my head, sekiro.

was on windows getting about 30fps and struggling to run, so I used a ported dxvk dll someone mentioned, it is on github (I'll post the link when I find it)

straight to 60fps, no more frame drops. it was crazy.

edit: I was on an AMD gpu, iirc I don't think people on nvidia had the same problem

update: found the post

cyanarchy ,

As I understand, it’s not common, but when it does happen it’s really because vulkan is just that much better than the original directx implementation, even with DXVK working to translate all the system calls.

ComeHereOrIHookYou ,

Not to mention older games run better on Linux because of better compatibility than on Windows.

It is so bad that sometimes certain games even use Wine’s DirectX dlls are used to improve performance on these older games, lol

Interesting that normal keyboard and mouse input would have a unique issue with just that one game.

I wonder what they do that’s not normal for handling input?

Strange.

On the Lemmy web client its two tildes ~ for strikeout.

One tilde is the subset font size.

Before ^superset^ After ^superset^

Before subset After ~subset~

Before strikeout After ~~strikeout~~

What formatting text do they use for subscript/superscript?

The Lemmy help page for formatting has the formatting text I’m using.

Seems like others are having the same problem. Looks like the non-web clients need to add support for subscript and superscript to themselves.

Are you running outdated version of voyager? Because it looks fine to me

Yes, I was. I checked in F-Droid and the reason it didn’t automatically update was something to do with an incompatible signature. But I updated it manually and it’s looking fine now.

I didn’t think about it too much but the Steelseries QcK has done me well for years. It’s a thin, soft mat with a nice sliding not too rough surface. Comes in different sizes.

Just had a look at these actually, good reviews across the board it seems. Looks promising!

I concur with the person above. I have a 4yo QcK Edge mat that still looks and feels almost new. If you thoroughly soak and clean them when they start to get grimy they’ll keep their properties for a very long time.

I’ve been using QcK mousepads for over 2 decades now. Still happy with them.

Telorand , (edited ) in Riot official response about League of Legends on Linux for Vanguard anti cheat

Makes business sense. Why bother developing for 800 users when you have hundreds of thousands, if not millions, to worry about? The software company I work for has to make this kind of decision all the time.

But it was nice of them to include a viable strategy for cheaters via VMs.

Edit: I should clarify that “business sense” is almost always a poor excuse, and considering the potential growth in the Linux market thanks to handhelds, Proton, and NVK, seems dumb to thumb your nose at that potential.

yggstyle ,

800 feels like a number they cherry picked considering the overall community size.

Speaking personally: their vm detection is hot garbage and they know it. Detecting a VM is easy enough for anyone- detecting cheating via it is far more difficult. They flag a VM as such and wait for a report to roll in then blindly ban it… only to reverse it when pressured. This isn’t the behavior of an org with concrete evidence. It’s a smokescreen.

KillingTimeItself ,

probably because those 800 users can’t fucking open the game. It’s almost like if you manufacture a car that doesn’t kill you the instant you fuck up even the slightest bit, that people will want to buy and own it.

Our tracking code is installed on more than 1.5 million sites globally. These sites cover various activities and geographic locations. Every month, we record billions of page views to these sites.

They uses website trackers to compute the data, which is not a reliable way to count linux market share. A large percentage of linux user are privacy conscious, and tend to mess with tracking scripts.

Here are some potential inaccuracy in tracking:

    • Good amount of unknown is probably people with tracker blocker, which blocked part of their tracking scripts. Or send confusing information to the tracker.
    • There are probably some Linux Machine shows up as Windows machine, since many browser pretend to run on windows to avoid fingerprinting.
    • Finally, the linux number itself might be overblown, as many browser has randomized fingerprint to prevent tracking, making them being tracked as different user.
    Acters ,

Also a lot of enterprise equipment runs on some kind of Linux and may also inflate the numbers. Linux will always be around, it’s windows and Mac os that need their parent companies to survive

In cases like this, because of the simplicity, I suggest installing PopOS! Nvidia ISO. Chances are, with that hardware, that it will just work. Good luck bud.

olafurp , (edited ) in Cannot get a single game working on Linux

Sounds like a driver Nvidia driver issue. Have you tried running a natively supported game like Counter Strike?

See if you can update/install the nvidia proprietary drivers and see if anything works.

See also if there’s a recommended diagnostics program to see if you can get more clues if the above doesn’t work.

    MrKurteous OP ,

I haven’t tried a natively supported game, I’ll go ahead and see if I can do that.

I have tried updating the Nvidia drivers. I’m not sure I understand what you mean by recommended diagnostics problem? Thank you for the tips!

Why is everyone always so stuck to one side or the other? Dual booting is a thing. You can have your cake and eat it too.

    sugar_in_your_tea ,

Just FYI, the expression makes more sense the other way around:

You can’t eat your cake and have it too.

And yeah, dual booting is absolutely a thing. That said, I find rebooting to play a game silly, so I just avoid stuff that doesn’t work on Linux. I can totally see the opposite perspective as well.

    RampantParanoia2365 ,

…how else would you go about eating it? Smashing your face into the whole cake?

    sugar_in_your_tea ,

The point is you can’t eat your cake and still have it afterward, because it has been eaten. So the more common version OP referenced makes no sense because you obviously need to have your cake before you’re able to eat it, so it’s unclear what you’re trying to say.

    RampantParanoia2365 ,

    Can I have some cake?

Sure, here you go. You can go ahead and eat it, too. Go on. It’s chocolate.

*having cake and eating it, too.

    sugar_in_your_tea ,

Right, but then the cake is gone and you don’t have it anymore, you just have a plate with crumbs. That’s what the adage is trying to convey (you can’t have it both ways). Either you save your cake for later, or you eat it not, you can’t do both.

    Scolding7300 ,

My linux usually boots very fast while Windows takes its sweet time, but still within 5m from power on to everything is up and warmed up.

So not something that stops me from rebooting to play a particular game

    sugar_in_your_tea ,

It’s not boot time, but context switching (close apps and whatnot). I suppose I could hibernate, but I still lose access to my network services, like my kids’ Minecraft server and network shares. And then Windows usually has massive updates because I launch it so rarely.

If I play on Linux, I just launch the game, and that’s it.

Before Steam came to Linux, I just didn’t play games very often. Now that most games work, I can just push play and I’m in a game, so I play a lot more games.

BurnedOliveTree , in Recommended linux variant for gaming.

I’ve been using Nobara for some time now, and I’ve been successfully able to play on Nvidia & Wayland, so that’s quite a feat in itself. Also, everything is setup at install time, so you don’t have to setup many things yourself.

    AceSLS ,

Are you not playing Windows games via wine/proton?

This issue is what stops me from switching to Wayland on my GTX 1080. It basically makes games unplayable because the frames get displayed out of order

    WeLoveCastingSpellz ,

I am a nobara user aswell, never encountered or heard about this issue

    AceSLS , (edited )

Weird, it’s definitely not fixed yet (just tried it on up to date Arch). I don’t think Nobara included a fix for it, what Desktop environment and GPU are you using?

Edit: Also happens on nvidia-open drivers and with RTX 40xx cards, which is mentioned here

So if it really doesn’t happen on your system in XWayland apps these people would probably be very interested in your setup

    WeLoveCastingSpellz ,

it is just nvidia card with propertiary nvidia drivers (535) and kde

    AceSLS ,

Are you on a laptop using Prime Render offload? That fixes it, otherwise you probably just didn’t notice. I’d recommend you compare it to gaming on X11

    WeLoveCastingSpellz ,

Yep I am on a laptop, thats probs it (wayland)

    russjr08 ,
    @russjr08@outpost.zeuslink.net avatar

This bug was the nail in the coffin on Nvidia for me and I finally picked up a 6700 XT to replace my 2080 this month…

But, when I was on my 2080 trying out Wayland, I of course always noticed this bug on actual apps themselves (such as my IDE…) but it didn’t always manifest in games, at least not till 545 came out.

Not sure why, since of course most games are run through XWayland. Perhaps they’re in a similar situation and I’d be curious if they opened something like Discord, if they saw it there.
