A lot of people will probably tell you that what you’re asking for is an oxymoron. It’s not, it sounds very cool, it just occupies a point on the spectrum that’s likely to take a lot of work to keep in an arbitrary balance between rock solid and bleeding edge.

cyanarchy ,

I haven’t used any of the arch install scripts but they seem to have regular problems. Doing it the usual way is a proper way to roll your own but it doesn’t give you options. You have to know what you want, or you have to know where to find out what exists.

The guided installer is going to be important to a type of person we’re going to see more and more of: power users that know what they want to do, but for whom the Linux ecosystem is a foreign and fractous entity what uses entirely unfamiliar nomenclature.

cyanarchy ,

I miss it so much, it was great in its heyday.

cyanarchy ,

Seconded, Alacritty has been great to me

cyanarchy ,

Just ripped a friend’s entire collection using cyanrip. Might be more powerful tools out there but I wanted something from the CLI.

cyanarchy ,

Bethesda’s inability to finish a game and leave it the fuck alone is going to drive me to avoid their products on principle soon.

cyanarchy ,

I agree with your stances but it’s widely agreed among people who have to use the data generated that opt-in forms of telemetry are useless because of the way they skew results.

cyanarchy ,

I have 64GB as future proofing (ITX board, two slots, can’t address any more). Normally I probably use 8 to 10 of those doing things like gaming and hoarding internet tabs like they’re a nonrenewable resource. I actually managed to crash my machine with an out of memory condition compiling something a while back. I don’t remember what and I’m sure it doesn’t count as regular use but I installed ZRAM to prevent it from happening again.

cyanarchy ,

I enjoy retrogaming as much as the next guy but it makes the Linux community look detached from reality to suggest that video games are a commodity. People want to play specific games. If pleading with people to be satisfied with native offerings was a winning argument it would have won twenty years ago. Emulation is an incredible experience on Linux but to do it legally requires you to already own the proprietary rom and bios almost without exception, which I notice is conveniently omitted from the discussion.

Good gaming experiences with no HUD?

I’m starting to find that HUDs in games clutter the screen and take away from being fully immersed in the game. I like games that force you to pay attention to what’s going on in the game and not numbers/markers on the edges of the display. What are some of your favorite games to play with no HUD? Here are a few of mine:...

cyanarchy ,

I second this. Ranger mode is also my gold standard for how FPS gameplay should feel. Anybody is going down after a couple rifle rounds to the chest, plates or no, and that includes you.

cyanarchy ,

I don’t think you actually could put the OS on NTFS, it literally cannot store Linux file permissions and I have no idea how badly that’s going to break the system.

You certainly can use an NTFS drive for data storage in Linux but Windows has some default behaviors that make it hard to share that drive.

cyanarchy ,

Yeah there’s a person for whom this is great but I don’t play RPGs to experience less-authentic renditions of myself.

cyanarchy ,

I currently use a combo of btop and radeontop for this. For GPU monitoring I’ve also used nvtop.

cyanarchy ,

This is at the discretion of your local vendors. Some places in my area stopped selling them altogether rather than raise the price. I think Arizona had to take the 99¢ branding off the can because it doesn’t work in a lot of markets. Places in my area will have them as cheap as 79¢ but it’s obviously a loss leader.

Louis Rossman/FUTO's YouTube app, GrayJay, now supports Sponsorblock... and shames you if you use it

Seriously this was very surprising. I’ve been experimenting with GrayJay since it was announced and I largely think it’s a pretty sweet app. I know there are concerns over how it isn’t “true open source” but it’s a hell of a lot more open than ReVanced. Plus, I like the general design and philosophy of the app....

cyanarchy ,

Probably, I’m fairly certain they get told which parts of the video get skipped and which get rewatched.

I think you may have the wrong language settings on your post. I know my instance is bilingual but I don’t usually see posts not in English.

cyanarchy ,

But convincing tech companies to make webpages bigger seems difficult.

Do we live in opposite universes or something?

cyanarchy ,

A lot of reddit transplants do not really spend time with curated feeds of subscriptions.

cyanarchy ,

I thought I was the only one who did this. It’s the only way I feel 100% secure.

cyanarchy ,

Yes. The bottleneck with games consoles has basically always been how fast you can get into data into memory and optical media has become a limiting factor in the last few hardware generations. I would say games started recommending installation to reduce load times in the late 360/PS3 era and have slowly started requiring it as the latest games are targeted at systems with SSDs and no optical drive at all.

Games that require you to unlock the basic functions of the game can suck my nuts.

I have recently played 3 games that have forced a lengthy, unskippable tutorial section that runs for several hours of the game, just to unlock the most basic functions like buying the items, customizing features, multiplayer, and even 2-player split screen modes....

cyanarchy ,

Halo makes a point of limiting the enemy and weapons sandbox on the first level, and does have a few explicit tutorial moments, mostly around melee and grenades.

cyanarchy ,

I use btop, iotop, jnettop, and radeontop. I rarely need any individual piece of information any of them but they make for an incredible spread of blinkenlights.

cyanarchy ,

No way we’re downloading the same repacks, it’s rare to see anything as small as fitgirl’s releases in my experience. Your CPU had better be ready to step up to the plate though.

cyanarchy ,

I think it’s the fact that not everything needs a 20 minute video. There’s a lot of topics that I’m interested in but skip because I don’t have 20, 30, 40, 60 minutes for it.

cyanarchy ,

So what the hell is alt drag?

cyanarchy ,

Ah, I think I’ve bumped into that on accident using qtile. It’s been inconsistent and I assumed that had to do with the window type. It might, but I also might be using the wrong key. Thanks.

For those who don't know, here are some cool linux communities on lemmy

!Linuxquestions This a community moderated by me that aims to be a place to ask all of your Linux questions. I’ve noticed that there are quite a few Linux questions on this community so I figures I’d post this here. Just one thing, don’t delete your posts!...

cyanarchy ,

Thanks for sharing Linuxquestions. I’m new to the ecosystem but my stuff works well for my current needs, so being exposed to people’s problems and the methods for approaching them is a great way to passively expand my knowledge.

cyanarchy ,

Seconded, I didn’t realize how bad Win 10 has gotten because I’ve used LTSC since Win 7. A far more bearable experience.

cyanarchy ,

No that seems to be entirely about Twitter.

cyanarchy ,

Yeah hi can someone explain the logic involved in advocating for Free Lossless Audio Codec as a method for storing photos?

cyanarchy ,

It takes a little time to start introducing you to the unique parts, it feels a little afraid to alienate traditional shooter fans but once it gets rolling nothing is quite like it.

cyanarchy ,

I think people like that view Linux as some kind of fiefdom rather than a community of individuals.

What was Elon Musk’s strategy for Twitter? A fired Trump White House staffer offers a tantalizing clue (www.nbcnews.com)

The text messages described a series of actions Musk should take after he gained full control of the social media platform: “Step 1: Blame the platform for its users; Step 2: Coordinated pressure campaign; Step 3: Exodus of the Bluechecks; Step 4: Deplatforming.”

cyanarchy ,

My vote also goes to qtile. Easily configured and very capable.

cyanarchy ,

Windows 11 is a bridge too far. I’m done with having my operating system being sold to me as a service, or monetizing my usage. Windows 10 was already unusable in any format other than LTSC.

The strides we’ve seen in gaming on Linux are possible largely with Valve’s support, and I might have made the jump earlier if we had those abilities sooner. Dual booting has never been a realistic use case for a computer given the way I use one.

I try to protect my privacy as best I can. I prefer the use of open source software where I can get it. Libre is even better. My reasons are both practical and ideological. But I don’t live in a world where I can reasonably cut out all proprietary software, and I honestly wouldn’t consider trying. There are far more important fights in my world.

cyanarchy ,

I do this. It’s part of a GPU passthrough setup, but in practice there aren’t many applications that require PRIME offload. I don’t use it for web browsers where I watch a lot of videos. I haven’t used VLC in a little bit but I’m pretty sure I don’t use it there either. Games and graphical applications. If I was doing video editing or modeling I would probably want it there too.

Cyberpunk runs 30% faster on linux than on windows 11 (m.youtube.com)

The YouTube channel “Maximum Fury” conducted a technical test of the new Cyberpunk add-on called “Phantom Liberty” on an older AMD hardware system, testing it separately on Linux and Windows 11. The Linux system, specifically the Fedora distribution called Nobara, performed significantly better, delivering 31% more...

cyanarchy ,

I haven’t tried the new update but this gives me high hopes for what my 6800 can chew through.

How likely is this to work? KVM/VFIO Single GPU Passthrough (www.youtube.com)

I’ve been wanting to make a proper switch over to Linux for a while now. I’ve currently have a dual-boot setup but still mostly use Windows. The majority of my games should work without fuss, but I’d like to have a simple solution for running the handful of things that don’t work in Linux, such as my WMR VR headset and a...

cyanarchy ,

I currently have a VFIO setup and it works great. There’s just almost nothing I need it for with how great Proton has become. I have an AMD APU and GPU. My Linux desktop runs on the APU and only offloads to the discrete GPU when invoked with the DRI_PRIME=1 environment variable.

Virt-Manager has the ability to run scripts at certain points in the VM startup and shutdown process. This is what I use to reassign the GPU to the VFIO stub driver so it can be handed to Windows, remove half of my CPU cores from the process scheduler so Windows isn’t suffering constant cache misses, and open looking-glass which uses a shared memory device to render the GPU output in a window on my desktop with minimal latency. Scream starts on login to handle audio, and you’re going to want to use a shared memory device for that because it has latency problems over network.

I’ve been told I have one foot in each bucket labeled “single GPU passthrough” and the other labeled “dual GPU passthrough”. If you’ve only got one you’ll have to exit your X or Wayland session to use the VM because your GPU cannot abide two masters. Nvidia has a functional equivalent to Prime, I think, but I don’t think it just works out of box. I understand Nvidia isn’t happy about their consumer cards being handed to VMs as it’s usually an expensive enterprise trick, so there might be a workaround process there.

The Arch wiki has a great tutorial on GPU passthrough using VFIO and OVMF, that’s probably your best bet on an arch based system like Manjaro.

Just another old dude complaining that his interests and the internet spaces that discuss them has become more accessible in the last thirty years. This type of greybeard elitism got in my way when I was trying to learn and if I hadn’t been self motivated to keep learning, that might have been the end of it. The biggest takeaway from this discussion is that Google is regressing in usefulness and that discord was always a bad place to store information.

cyanarchy ,

The reason this is being asked is because the PC port for GTA IV was notoriously broken. There is a popular set of patches and mods that will improve that and I know they come bundled in the fit girl repack but it’s one of the ones that won’t play nice with WINE during installation.

cyanarchy ,

It’s not an FPS problem, it’s a visual fidelity problem stemming from a bad port.

Did we kill Linux's killer feature?

A few years ago we were able to upgrade everything (OS and Apps) using a single command. I remember this was something we boasted about when talking to Windows and Mac fans. It was such an amazing feature. Something that users of proprietary systems hadn’t even heard about. We had this on desktops before things like Apple’s...

cyanarchy ,

As far as I know, Ubuntu is unique in its insistence on snaps. I can’t really speak for any others but my system runs fine entirely on native or locally compiled packages known to my package manager.

cyanarchy ,

So you don’t want to hear about the arch box I leave hot and live for two months at a time?

Yeah, Linux breaks sometimes, we're here for you.

Four days ago, I woke up, as I usually expect to after going to sleep and I turned on my really fucking awesome Archlinux gaming rig, hit the desktop and decide, hmmmm… I haven’t updated in a while(a week), let’s pacman -Syyuu and get up to speed. Well, I got up to speed and my favorite game, the best game of all time,...

cyanarchy ,

Now, I know what you’re thinking, who in their right mind would suggest Archlinux for a beginner?

I did this to follow some arcane manuals to hand my entire GPU over to a windows vm. It’s a neat trick and I’ve learned a unbelievable amount in a short time, but it can be frustrating as all hell and took probably a month of getting things the way they needed to be.

cyanarchy ,

I learned a lot about both Linux and virtual machines. I’d say it’s worth it if you think that knowledge would be useful to you. Proton and Wine-GE both do almost everything I could want but when something can’t or won’t work, it’s nice to just throw it into a environment you know it will work with. I think I keep all of five games on my windows vm, and I might need it for productivity software in the future.

There’s a few ways of doing GPU passthrough, as you probably know. I have an APU and discrete GPU, which allows me to use Windows like just another application on my Linux desktop by way of looking-glass and scream-ivshmem. It’s very convenient. I can imagine it would be less so if you’re looking at a single-GPU situation as I think you’d have to close your graphics session when you swap.

cyanarchy ,

I haven’t been a multiplayer gamer in a while, and the only mp game I fire up from time to time doesn’t have this problem. So I admit I forget it can be a thorn in the side of some people.

TikTok is blocking searches for WGA amid the ongoing writers strike (www.mediamatters.org)

Users on TikTok searching for “WGA” are met with a screen claiming that the phrase “may be associated with behavior or content that violates our guidelines.” No videos return. Users are also unable to search for the “WGA” hashtag....

My guy do you really not understand the shared desire of corporations to prevent solidarity and organization among workers?

cyanarchy ,

Your ship is kinda like a player home you bring around with you. Having one that uniquely suits your needs and preferences is cool, and also I want a damn weapon workbench.
