whois , in Glad to see Lemmy users appreciating diversity

Well, Lemmy users lately are reddit users. These users have been doing their best to turn Lemmy into what they recognize from reddit. And as everyone knows reddit users are porn sick.

ass_destroyer ,

Legend has it that every new technology is first used for something related to sex or pornography. That seems to be the way of humankind.

Even the ancient days of usenet were full of smut

Crismus ,

I kind of miss those old Usenet days. Being 16 and waiting most of the night for a picture to load was great.

Back when I made sure to download the progressive JPEG, because loading single line top to bottom was hell. Unless there was a chance that the phone would be picked up, then I wanted regular JPEG, because then when I lost connection I still would have most of a picture.

You never knew what you were going to get.

In the early 90s, when I was a teen, I accessed the internet through the computer lab, downloaded tons of porn at a higher rate, uploaded the pics to local BBSes, got a huge ratio, downloaded tons of pirated games and had lots of porn. I was a genius back then. Not so much now.

Agent641 ,

Some days it would take ten whole minutes to download a handcrafted ascii art boob.

Lemmy is, very specifically, a Reddit clone.

You could say the same about rdrama.net

rustic_tiddles , in But have you tried Jerboa?

Unless you’re an independently wealthy jackass, I’m not sure how you can attack non-FOSS software users. I am a software engineer and I get paid to write software. I write some code for fun at home too and if people use any of my projects Im delighted. But if you want bug fixes and reliability and consistent new features and updates to apis and I have to listen to your bullshit complaints about how XYZ is better, you bet your ass I’m gonna charge for that.

It’s like a baker making bread who gives out a few loaves for free at first. You don’t get to complain if 100s of people show up demanding free bread and he starts charging them. Maybe communism is a system that demands people work for free, but elsewhere you’re entitled to whatever wage the market will bear.

The bread analogy dies at the same point that the piracy argument dies. It isnt truly stealing to make a copy of something… and it doesnt cost a developer more effort the more people that download their app.

Years ago, I came to the conclusion that the right way to support yourself being a software company was to provide service, not software. I also believe selling software licenses to for-profit companies is a good strategy. Bug bounties are fine too.

Point is, I think there are plenty of ways software developers can make a living without being closed-source or nag-ware. Most companies do not want their employees spending time fixing bugs in software, and many are fine paying reasonable licensing fees as long as their software group is satisfied with the service - which mainly happens when said IT group isn’t having to spend too much time messing with it.

Freesoftwareenjoyer ,

You are right, but I see no reason why you couldn’t sell Libre software. People never have to pay for software, they choose to do it. It doesn’t matter if the app is proprietary or not.

Historical_General ,

I’m reminded that in the past every release of a software (at least the major ones) would be a single paid-for release. Obviously the google play model inhibits that kind of sensible monetisation straegy for now (I think).

Think photoshop before, the model that clip studio pro has ‘reverted’ back to (I support it, but I can’t help but remember that time when they bombed twitter with adverts with a deal - that’s money that didn’t go towards development).

Freesoftwareenjoyer ,

The Free Software movement has nothing to do with price. It’s about freedom. We deserve to have the freedom to control our own devices. Proprietary software takes that away, so it’s unethical.

QuazarOmega ,

It’s shame, if only the ideology wasn’t born in an anglophone country maybe this common misconception would have never been a thing in the first place.

LIBERTÀÀÀ!!

settoloki , in As an OG Reddit Sync user of over 10 years, all this arguing really brings a tear to my eye. 🥲

It does seem like a large number of Lemmy users are elitist snobs. I thought this place was turning out better than Reddit, but it’s looking like I was wrong. People like that ruin platforms like this and sour the experience.

maajmaaj ,
@maajmaaj@lemmy.world avatar

Toughen up, elitist jackasses are everywhere, they were even on reddit before we left. It’ll pass.

Chadus_Maximus ,

The reason why many people swapped was because Lemmy harbors smarter individuals. I need to feel superior simply because I use Lemmy, Otherwise there’s no point.

Kecessa ,

FOSS and focus on privacy does that to some people, they feel superior because they worry about those things they see as being beneficial.

I’m sure many of the users from the before time were here specifically to not use a closed source, data gathering platform, so they’re a bigger proportion of users than they were on Reddit and they tolerate the most extreme elements of their community that also happen to be the most vocal.

TL;DR: Reddit is for normies and now normies are on a platform where radicals were everywhere and part of the majority before they arrived.

THED4NIEL ,

Sometimes those extreme privacy preachers remind me of doomsday preppers.

I too reduced my data finger print, started using uBlock, thought more often if the data in a registration form is really needed for the service they provide (and didn’t register when in doubt), and so on…

I don’t have Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram, Twitter (anymore), the only things I have are Reddit, Lemmy and Mastodon.

Still I don’t inspect every bit going through my network with Wireshark and PiHole to see, if some packet sent while watching a movie may contain personal data. At some point you gotta live a little instead of full-time fear mongering, doomsday preaching for the tech apocalypse.

I have reduced my digital fingerprints by a large margin with common sense, I don’t need a 100% privacy speedrun, what counts is that you do something. And the effects show, especially in the form of less spam and recommendations for items you’ll never need.

Google knows which topics I search for, big whoop, wouldn’t be much of a search engine otherwise.

PopOfAfrica ,

I think a lot of you are confusing privacy focused to elitism.

No data should ever go to a google server from Lemmy app ever.

A lot of people seem to think the issue is that’s he’s charging for it.

Stephen304 ,

Not wanting to use any app that goes to a google server for a lemmy app is being privacy focused. Telling other people their preference in not valuing the same thing is wrong is elitism - saying that no app should do something, and nobody else should use an app that does that thing, because you prefer it that way - that’s elitism.

Sync and the people who like it aren’t invalid just because your preference is being privacy focused.

Along the same lines, it’s totally possible to espouse the values of privacy to others without being elitist, as long as you aren’t talking down to other people or invalidating other people’s preferences, because that’s elitism.

PopOfAfrica ,

I’m am saying it is objectively bad thing for an app to run through google servers

sfgifz ,

I’m saying it’s my choice where I want to send my data.

PopOfAfrica ,

And Im saying it is objectively a bad one.

armrods ,

faintedheart ,

There are many entitled people here. Some of them are from linux community. Anything other than that is bad and 1000 posts related to that. Another is sync and other apps. Especially open source only good, closed source everything bad. My feed was full of that. Even though I am a sync user i feel angry when seeing so many non sense posts supporting and against that. Even some communities not related to these are posting this.

I was like that when I was young. Now all my plans involve me forcing myself to do 1 or 2 productive things a day besides the stuff I have to do, and then just calling it a day and pushing aside the rest of the stuff I probably should do till tomorrow. Or more realistically, the next weekend or holiday.

I don't lie to myself anymore, I just admit that if it's not 100% vital, it won't get done quick, if at all.

BURN ,

Mid 20s here, this is what I’ve ended up at too. I prioritize how much each thing needs to be done and then force myself through 1-2, sometimes even 3 as early in the morning as I can. Otherwise it doesn’t get done
