fuck toxic masculinity, and it’s pervasive grip that has strangled so much

elscallr ,
@elscallr@lemmy.world avatar

I feel like people are doing a disservice by using the phrase “toxic masculinity”

You can’t use that phrase without implying masculinity in general is a bad thing. Trying to draw a distinction between “masculinity” and “toxic masculinity” is using the same logic as the people that say “but you’re one of the good ones” when they’re talking to someone of [insert race, gender, religion, etc].

They’re toxic people that cause these problems. There’s nothing wrong with masculinity.

pete_the_cat ,

Toxic Masculinity is taking masculinity to the extreme, acting like the only masculine traits are those that are cold and lack emotion. It’s possible to be masculine but to also have emotions.

Sanyanov ,

You’re making an incorrect comparison here.

Race, gender, etc. are: 1)Immutable 2)Not harmful, they just are

Toxic masculinity is behavior, it: 1)Causes measurable harm 2)Can be changed

It’s not okay to put those things into the same bin. While I appreciate and somewhat applaud your effort to stand up for masculinity that many say is in crisis, this can be approached in a plethora of ways besides promoting objectively harmful behaviors.

I_dont_believe_it ,

And yet we never hear about toxic femininity, it sure feels pretty biased, especially when in this case it’s literally a woman that’s making a guys life miserable… And yet toxic masculinity 🤷‍♂️

Sanyanov ,

Toxic feminity would be rather shaming other women for not being feminine enough, or something along these lines. Restricting even healthy aggression in women, forcing certain visual styles etc.

But what you’re seemingly talking about - women propagating toxic masculinity again - is very real, and something we should talk about (and I do here and there). After all, it’s in the interest of everyone. Men can finally take a breather and be themselves, freed up from harmful expectations, and women will have to deal with much less dangerous aggression from men, alcoholic husbands etc.

We just generally need to build a more compassionate society. And that absolutely entails being compassionate to men.

Ookami38 ,

There’s ABSOLUTELY toxic femininity. The idea that you have to be airbrush perfection. That real women don’t pay on their dates. That yu should play games and be unavailable because no one likes a whore. That’s all toxic femininity. Why doesn’t it get much air compared to toxic masculinity? Probably because we’re coming off a MASSIVE patriarchy and toxic masculinity is fucking SWAMPED in our culture, but both absolutely exist.

tigeruppercut , (edited )

Yeah bruh, I hate toxic people and I’m trying to cut them out of my life. That of course means exactly the same as saying I hate all people.

Ookami38 ,

I get what you’re saying but you’re wrong. Toxic masculinity is a societal expectations thing. It’s the background noise that’s ever-present in society saying “masculinity is anger.” “Masculinity is never crying.” “Masculinity is shoving those emotions deep down in the man place, where they’ll never be seen again.”

Healthy masculinity is ideas such as taking care of your shit. Owning responsibility for the things you can effect. Shit like that. When someone says someone has issues because of toxic masculinity, they’re not saying that masculinity itself is bad. Of course it isn’t. The thing that’s bad is our, society’s, views on what masculinity is. That’s the toxic masculinity.

Texas_Hangover ,

How the fuck are you blaming “toxic masculinity” for your cunty slut wife’s actions?

skyler ,
@skyler@lemmy.world avatar

The social norm of men suppressing their emotions is a trait of toxic masculinity. His wife is propagating toxic masculinity by making him suppress his emotions.

pete_the_cat ,

uis ,
@uis@lemmy.world avatar

Use L’Hôpital. Manual in Russian.

SchizoDenji ,

For an easy approximation by this rule, just differentiate both numerator and denominator by the same variable and apply the limits again.

blind3rdeye ,

Yep. ∞ is infinitely big in the same way that 0 is infinitely small. -0 = 0 and -∞ = ∞. Opposite ends of the circle. (Or the Riemann sphere if you like complex numbers.)

raspberriesareyummy ,

While this Riemann sphere seems like a useful concept, -∞ = ∞ is an observation that doesn’t seem to hold true outside this spherical model of complex numbers. Just add ∞ to the both sides, and you end up with 0 = ∞ + ∞ which is most certainly not true.

blind3rdeye ,

Sure. And it also doesn’t help to avoid the problems with division by zero. But lucky we’re posting in the shitpost section, so we don’t have to worry too much about details.

cows_are_underrated ,

0 = ∞ + ∞ which is most certainly not true.

This is only true if both infinite are the same, but one is negative. As a general statement you’re right, that this is not true.

raspberriesareyummy ,

Well - in the post I replied to there was explicit talk about +∞ and -∞, upon which I believe it is fair to say that ∞ is positive in this example.

MBM ,

Just add ∞ to the both sides

That’s why ∞ - ∞ is left undefined (same as 0/0 and ∞/∞)

raspberriesareyummy ,

adding ∞ to both sides does not create a ∞ - ∞ situation, though. The substraction is a whole different topic, because it becomes an elimination problem, whereas ∞ + ∞ = ∞

Raisins with the extra hint of tetanus and rust from the tack that's held it, rounded with distinct notes of stuffy cork board!

QuinceDaPence ,

Fun fact: tetanus comes from dirt, not rust. But it has to get into your blood and typically that only happens when you get pierced by a piece of dirty metal, which will typically be rusty if it's in that situation.

Slow ,

You forgot about germs and parasites.

QuinceDaPence ,

Yeah but Tetanus is caused by a specific bacteria called Clostridium Tetani and I don't know how it would find its way to a random thumb tack, inside a building.

LemmyKnowsBest ,

So are you saying there is no risk of tetanus after getting pierced by a rusty nail with no dirt on it?

QuinceDaPence ,

Correct. If you take a totally clean, disinfected nail, stick it in some lab grade brine until it gets rusty, and then stab yourself with it, there is a 0% chance of getting tetanus.

You could technically have tetanus on something without it being covered in dirt. My point is tetanus bacteria lives in the dirt. But the rust has nothing to do with it other than making the metal more likely to cut or pierce you.

People tend to think the rust is what causes it.

IMO, rectangle sports are the most boring sports in existence. It’s literally a rectangle and always a rectangle every time… And everyone stands around watching the exact same shit happening inside the perfectly constructed rectangle. It’s the same thing, over and over. Not only that but millions of people say they love sports, but they don’t even play, just stare at a glowy rectangle and watch people in a rectangle run around. You can’t define a more boring sport than that. At the very bare minimum, to spice things up, how about introducing some goddamn obstacles randomly placed in the rectangle. Add some actual dynamic scenarios that keep the players on their toes and trying to come up with new strategies.

Motocross and enduro racing are sports and so is golf. Golf courses are all different, they unique, dynamic change depending on temperature, weather, grass length, wind, dew point, hole location.

But I do agree in general, golf courses are very big waste. Especially when placed in the middle of deserts or places that require significant resources to maintain.

TopRamenBinLaden ,

I’ve always wondered why we don’t really have hooligans in the US. Not just for soccer/football, but any sport. I wonder if Hockey fans’ thirst for violence is quenched by the fights in hockey, and that’s why there is no Hockey hooligans or something.

We got Raiders fans who are pretty close, though.

It’s like you don’t even believe in Philadelphia sports teams.

TopRamenBinLaden ,

Lmao you are right. It’s the same thing just dumb drunk fans doing dumb things. The difference is that our obnoxious fans are spread out enough that they don’t meetup and have gang fights too often. Ours mostly just fuck their own cities up.

zalgotext ,

A man was recently killed in the Patriots stadium after an away fan sucker punched him. US sports definitely have “hooligans”.

Obi ,
@Obi@sopuli.xyz avatar

While horrible that still sounds nothing like hooligans that will literally contact each other and arrange a meeting somewhere near the stadium before/after the match to beat each other up with home made weapons.

I think the true reason is that in the US that would just immediately devolve into gun shootouts and that’s probably too much for anyone.

TopRamenBinLaden ,

This is more what I was getting at. I think we don’t really have the hooligan type gang fights because we are so much more spread out than most of the countries with soccer/football hooligans.

ryathal ,

There’s a university not far from me that regularly burns couches for big games. Two years in a row, fans have taken uprights from football stadiums and thrown them in lakes/rivers. There’s usually a game or two per year that cars get flipped or other vandalism.

The NFL is really good at killing reporting, but fights among fans are fairly common and people have died this year from them.

The US has hooligans.

TopRamenBinLaden ,

Fair points. Yea I guess we just got our own breed of them. I think the only reason it’s really different is that most of the fan bases are too separated to do the gang fight thing like they do in some places.

Restaldt ,

Bruh Philadelphia burns down every time they win something big

Plenty of college football stadium goalposts are designed to be easily replaced because fans will storm the field and take them down/home with them after big wins

TopRamenBinLaden ,

Yea I know all about this. It’s still a different thing than gangs forming around teams and then meeting up to have a large scale fight. I guess guns and the fact that the fan bases are spread out kind of keep everybody from considering that idea in the US.

ILikeBoobies ,

They could just use the old rules

SharpieThunderflare ,

Like what happened in Pasadena, 1994.

0xD ,

I’m not a fan of watching sports myself, but you’re ignoring a big part of it: The strategy behind it and its execution. But apart from that, I think most people just want to feel like a part of something and cheering on a team is an easy way to do that.

Cylusthevirus ,
@Cylusthevirus@kbin.social avatar

Dude you can describe anything this way to make it sound boring, but that doesn't even get close to reality and I think you know that deep down. I don't even like sports and this is a senselessly reductive way of framing the discussion.

VicentAdultman ,

IMO, rectangle phone screens are the most boring screens in existence. It’s literally a rectangle and always a rectangle every time… And everyone hold it around watching the exact same shit happening inside the perfectly constructed rectangle. It’s the same thing, over and over. Not only that but millions of people say they love their phone, but they don’t even post, just stare at a glowy rectangle and watch people in a rectangle posts around. You can’t define a more boring screen than that. At the very bare minimum, to spice things up, how about introducing some goddamn obstacles randomly placed in the rectangle. Add some actual dynamic scenarios that keep the owners on their toes and trying to come up with new strategies.

Hangglide ,

Aussie rules football is all that you describe, but on an oval.

CoggyMcFee , (edited )

Soccer fields are affected by temperature, weather, state of grass, wind, etc. too. So are football and baseball fields. Baseball fields are all unique. Cricket fields are round.

That said, there are obstacles in those identical rectangles. But unlike golf, these obstacles can move and think! They are called opponents and believe it or not, they can often be more dynamic than a tree or pond!

Kecessa ,

You just gave me an idea…

Soccer on a square field, four teams playing against one another, scoring in the nets closest to yours gives one point, in the net facing yours gives 2 points. Imagine the chaos!
