BubbleMonkey , (edited ) in gaudy and not my vibe

I tracked down the house I lived in until I was 5-6. I have lots of pictures of it in its glory and I remember it fondly.

It was an old 1800s school building that my parents converted into a house. Very cool building, lots of old-school charm (hehe).

Finding it was a huge mistake. The present owners don’t even live in it, they built a house just to the side of it and use the old structure as support for solar panels, and probably storage for the junk sprawling over the property. Which… I’m down with solar but it’s so sad to see something with so much history, charm, and character… absolutely ruined in under 30 years.

Look on the bright side: a vote for Biden is really just a vote for Kamala Harris with extra steps.

kungen ,

Yeah, but is that supposed to make us feel better?

abracaDavid ,

Harris is a joke and a cop that made her name on being super hard on small criminal offenses.

She ain’t it. I mean, have you heard the weird things that she says while she’s speaking?

She’s a terrible candidate. A somehow even worse Hillary.

SkyezOpen ,

Hillary is such a smug fuck I really don’t know what Harris would have to do to make me hate her more.

maniii ,

She aggressively enforced Marijuana convictions that had a pre-dominant predisposition against her own community.

RealThunderhop ,
@RealThunderhop@lemmy.world avatar

I mean she habitually lies like Hillary. She is basically an enabler for a fascist police state (extreme militarization and attacking peaceful protesters). Obvious warmonger as well (current admin has that whole genocide enabling thing happening now)

Her khive cult harasses/ed people and tries/ed to get them to commit suicide/ruin their lives. It’s been a thing for years. Fun fact is there are Hillary fans that do the same thing. They’ve not been held accountable for any of these things, and are basically a domestic terror group online. I mean there are plenty of right-wing nuts that do the same, but they get held accountable sometimes.

Sorry, I just have to ask-

What in the fuck are you talking about?

GregorGizeh ,

Not op, no idea either. Best I can make of it is some sort of surrealist fifth level multi playered reference to several memes at once? The only one I know is the trolley problem one

5C5C5C ,

If we are now considering philosophical intellectual exercises to be memes then this description is accurate.

GregorGizeh ,

Well obviously it is a philosophical dilemma, but the dozens of ironic variations created for memes gave it a different purpose as meme template.

Otherwise it would be a lot less well known i would guess, under normal circumstances you encounter this perhaps once or twice during your education unless you actively take an interest in such musings. Due to the memes I probably come across the drawing once per week if not more

The grand hilbert hotel is a metaphor about infinity. If a hotel has an infinite number of rooms, it will have enough room for him. If every room is full, they can all still move up by one room number. Infinity means you can always shift everyone up by 1 room number.

The ship of theseus is a philosophical question about whether it’s still the same ship after having every board and nail in it replaced over centuries of repairs gradually replacing all of its parts.

Asking if Sisyphus is happy is a reference to a famous Albert Camus (French absurdist philosopher) quote “One must imagine Sisyphus happy”

GregorGizeh ,

Very interesting stuff, thank you!

Albeit the post deems a bit esoteric for lemmyshitpost without the extra context

lugal ,

I love how you call them memes. These are things philosophers talked about long before the word meme had its modern day meaning, even before it was coined in the first place. But in a way, yes, they are all memes

GregorGizeh ,

I mean, I also acknowledged them as philosophical dilemmas in another comment, but I suppose it is my own fault for not clarifying that in the first.

lugal ,

No, I wasn’t ironic. It’s not wrong to think of these dilemmas, paradoxes and ideas as memes. Memes are not only pictures

Makeitstop ,
Hjalamanger ,

one must imagine Sisyphus happy”, a quote from the last sentence in Albert Camus book the myth of Sisyphus (original title; “Le mythe de Sisyphe”)

clay_pidgin ,

It’s meaningless and unfunny.

Sysiphus is cursed to forever till a boulder uphill.

The Hilbert Hotel is a philosophical math idea. It has an infinite number of rooms, all full. If you another person wants a room, everyone with a room moves over one. Room 1 moves into room 2, etc. Room 1 is now empty for the new person, and the hotel again has an infinite number of rooms, all full. Just one larger infinite than before.

The Ship of Theseus is a Greek story from Plutarch’s Lives about a ship whose parts get replaced as they wear out. The question is - is it the same ship if it has none of the same parts?

AliasVortex ,

Humor is admittedly subjective, but I enjoyed the random mismatched and subversion of expectations enough for a chuckle. The trolly problem setup and pretty much every other detail being ultimately irrelevant is rather amusing in an absurdist humor (Hitchhikers Guild) or anti-joke (yo’ Mama’s so fat…

spoilerThat we’re all very concerned for her health

) kind of way.

VinnyDaCat , in History is written by the victors

Even if you look past the cruelties committed, it’s still disappointing.

I’ve read a variety of books on various wars and those that we were involved in were mostly disappointing in regards to tactical decisions. Everything after the revolution either feels like a fluke or just simply feels as if we brute forced our way through with resources until the post WWII era where various campaigns failed due to guerilla warfare. I’m oversimplifying but especially early on in its life the country’s militia was a bit unimpressive.

splonglo , in History is written by the victors

Actually History isn’t always written by the victors. After WW2 a load of german officers fled to south America and began writing books about how great they were and could have won if only they had finished developing all their wonder weapons in time. This is the origin of a lot of persistent and false memes about how advanced and brilliant the nazis supposedly were. It’s history written by losers.

lugal ,

You talk about memes. I don’t know them. I think all states, including Germany, teach the story of the Victors in school

UrPartnerInCrime ,

Actually History isn’t always written by the victors… This is the origin of a lot of persistent and false memes…

You may remember history but your reading comprehension needs a little work

lugal ,

What does writing history mean to you? Making memes no one knows about, isn’t. Making memes that enter public consciousness (as the word combination “a lot of persistent” seems to suggest or at least leave open) maybe. But what do I know, I lack basic reading skills apparently.

UrPartnerInCrime ,

Writing history is more than just what’s actually written down. Stories passed through word of mouth, that stick around, are a part of history a la German Scientists making themselves seems smarter after losing. Which is a reoccurring trope throughout Media.

So yes, history is sometimes ‘written’ by the losers

duderium2 , (edited )

Interestingly, the CIA also rescued thousands of high-profile Nazis and brought them to the USA, where they were given positions of power and authority (Operation Paperclip, Operation Bloodstone), and began teaching people that changing anything is impossible and we need to fight communism because it is evil and authoritarian and goes against human nature and always fails (not because it’s the most effective way to destroy Nazism).

JasonDJ ,

How come I don’t see any high-speed balloon chases then?

But my BIL had to get a license to fly his drone and needs to get approval from the FAA to go over like 100ft at my MILs house because it’s “so close” (like 3 miles in a straight line) to the airport.
