Ok, you have to try them with President brand butter. It’s a cultured butter from France. It’s the most buttery tasting butter my tastebuds have ever tasted. It’s all I buy now.

ABC123itsEASY ,

Yea essentially the requirements to call a product ‘butter’ are stricter in Europe and American butter can have a higher water content / lower fat content than European butter. Check out this video for more info: youtu.be/gBfFpSMvstU

It’s really grocery stores fault. They sell them right next to each other and often have like 8 different brand choices of one but only 1 or 2 of the other which is nestled somewhere inbetween the others.

Aux ,

It’s an American language fault. Parchment paper is called baking paper elsewhere. You can’t make a mistake when choosing between baking paper and non baking paper.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot ,

I’m just glad I live in an area that calls carbonated beverages “pop”. I can only imagine the mix-ups that could’ve occurred when trying to use baking soda otherwise.

Ilovethebomb ,

Parchment is something you write on, as far as I’m concerned.

Hamartiogonic , (edited )
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

I was reading this and thinking how come you even have two papers to choose from. Baking paper goes in the oven and parchment… isn’t that like an animal skin you write on? I don’t think I’ve ever used wax paper for anything, so I can’t imagine what that’s for.

Orange ,
@Orange@sh.itjust.works avatar

Wax paper is non-stick so has a lot of different uses as long as you aren’t heating it up. For example you could put some down while you roll out cookie dough if you don’t want to clean flour off your countertop. Can use it to make decorations for your baked goods like chocolate strings or something similar. Drizzle the melted chocolate on the wax paper and once it cools and hardens it will come right off.

Hamartiogonic , (edited )
@Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz avatar

I think I may have heard of that stuff. Something like 70 years ago people used to buy food items in bulk, so you needed to package your block of butter somehow. Wax paper was used back in those days. Since food manufacturers started packaging the products, the demand for wax paper dropped to near zero, so that’s why you don’t really encounter it much any more.

I’m sure some stores still sell it, but baking paper is so easily available that people just use that instead. Nowadays people would just use baking paper for the examples you just gave.

Edit: just went to the local supermarket and I found 15 stacks of normal baking paper on the shelf (at least 8 different brands) and one stack of wax paper. Apparently it hasn’t disappeared completely. Someone must be still using it for something.

ultratiem ,
@ultratiem@lemmy.ca avatar

And I have yet to see a single one with a giant badge that says “not for oven use!” Moreover, wax paper is always marketed as “microwave safe.” I know a microwave is not an oven, but it’s not ludicrous to equate the two.

    It’s a sum with n from 1 to infinity. The first value with n=1 is 3/4, with n=2 it’s 3/16. And if you keep adding those terms as n goes to infinity it approaches 1 but never gets there.

    Then if you look back at the meme, you could zoom in for infinity and always find a smaller square.

    Because you’re focusing on wanting to not think about it rather than focusing on observing your thoughts and details about the present moment. Thoughts will come and go, allow them to, then gently redirect yourself back to something like breathing, physical sensations, etc.

    That’s the gist of what’s been kind of helping me the most of everything I’ve tried and it’s quite difficult to practice and there’s a lot more that goes into it (like you do have to actually challenge some thoughts) but yeah.

    @KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

    Well this is just inaccurate.

    North North North North Virginia should be North North North East North North Virginia, and that propagates through The State Formerly Known As New Hampshire and The State Formerly Known As Maine, too.

    North North North North Virginia would be Old Canada.

    Edit: I guess technically it would be North North East North North North Virginia; the labeling would track backwards from the current state to Virginia. East North Virginia would be 1 state east of “North Virginia”, for example, which would be The State Formerly Known As Delaware.

    I’ve spent way too much time thinking about this already.

    TheProtagonist ,

    Let me guess:

    The first one is „God is dead“ by admin „K_Marx“

    The second one is: „Marx is dead“ by admin „God“

    But can’t you be on lemmy.ml and follow all the interesting communities from other instances (which might be harder to find, though)?

    frippa ,
    @frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

    The only instances that are blocked are porn ones, that’s a thing I don’t miss from reddit tbh, but the swear filter is really dumb. And doesn’t really fucking filters swears, but it’s really dumb regardless, since it’s neither opt-in nor opt-out, it’s just there.

    TheProtagonist ,

    This almost seems like if the “god fraction“ has won…

    I know that they had a “no porn” rule, but “no swearing” is new to me. Surely it will be a healthy family-friendly community.

    I have no issue with some occasional nudes in my timeline. I could blur or filter it, if I would want to avoid this.

    But porn in the web for me is an important part of the “freedom of expression”, therefore I find it anachronistic if some community tries to block / ban this.

    abbotsbury ,
    @abbotsbury@lemmy.world avatar

    Sure, but porn is so easily available that one only needs to explicitly look for it. Meanwhile there was a deluge of fetish communities appearing that every user had to block individually if they didn’t want 10 fart fetish posts on their timeline, so it was a quality of life improvement to block those communities on the server level.

    TheProtagonist , (edited )

    Of course you can get anything online if you go for it. But this kind of occasional nudes in my “all” timeline reminds me of the old Reddit days - and is quite nice as long as it doesn’t become too much.

    So far I’ve never seen any fart-fetish community / post in my timeline tbh.

    abbotsbury ,
    @abbotsbury@lemmy.world avatar

    Well it wasn’t really occasional at the start when lots of people started creating new communities, every day there would be a bunch of new posts from new communities appearing in All

    before we had defederated from the porn server, I had blocked

    -Diaper porn

    -Gone wild

    -One just called “porn”

    -Hentai

    -Sissy chastity

    -huge boobs

    -Celebs

    -Sissies

    -Hentai - BDSM

    -GoneMild

    -Grool

    -GoneMildPlus

    -Trans Hydro Hotties

    -Blowjob

    and at some point it’s like, could we make porn opt-in instead of playing whack a mole with every niche fetish? Yeah there’s an NSFW option, but that’s more for hiding the images themselves, not ignoring the communities or servers.
