Oh my goodness. I didn’t think I was going to get worked up about this. The last three TVs to enter my house have a weird joystick. None of them are in the same place. None of them work he same way.

Give me 6 real buttons: power, input, channels up/down, and volume up/down. Access to the menu would be great, but isn’t as high a priority.

I haven’t bought one in like 15 years but modern universal remotes are pretty cool. The Logitech Harmony remotes do all kinds of cool shit, though they require a computer to program and they are not cheap. Then there’s always the old dumb universal remotes that get the job done and cost like $10.

Music wasn’t always so easily accessible as it is now. I think really only the radio was something everyone would have access to. If you had vinyl, CDs etc then you were at least somewhat musically inclined and some folks would just not be and never really get into it or invest in getting their own music. Not that they would literally never hear or listen to music but it wasn’t one of their hobbies. Compared to today where we all have access to music on demand and it would be weird if you don’t have at least some preferences or something.

I would sing my daughter Johnny Cash in NICU. She loves it now. Best part is the chords tend to be easy if she wants to learn to play, or if I ever want to learn LOL

    brewbellyblueberry ,

If she ever expresses an interest, maybe even without, buy a guitar and learn with her. Like you’re teaching, but you’re actually learning with her. Bonding x1000. You can both sing or take turns if it’s too difficult to play and sing from the get-go.

    Corkyskog ,

Oh just because I don’t know how to play doesn’t mean I own a few guitars haha. She is set if she ever decided to play

    brewbellyblueberry , (edited )

Oh haha, perfect. You have a ukulele? I highly recommend one even just for you if you want to learn. There’s something weirdly inoffensive and less threatening about a uke that it’s easier to approach while it’s literally just a mini guitar with four strings. I’ve played guitar since I was under 10 years old and I have half a dozen guitars, but I find myself playing most on these tiny, cute guitars. Like you have a minute till the water’s boiling, you can just grab it for a second and chuck it back on the corner of the sofa. Like you’re not “really playing” - you’re just killing time, but you actually are.

Also just the fact that it has less strings literally makes it less difficult and you can still play it like a guitar. I kind of hate this trend that everyone plays it like they’re on vacation in Hawaii, because it literally is just a tiny guitar. It’s the perfect starter guitar.

    Corkyskog ,

I don’t have a Ukulele, just an acoustic guitar I inherited from my grandma and another hybrid acoustic electric that I paid a decent chunk of change for… I also have two violins (don’t ask why) Ukulele sounds like a good thing, I often play around with the guitars when I am bored or want to annoy my wife.

Is the finger positioning easier on a Ukulele? That’s what I have the most trouble with, I don’t have long fingers, so getting all the strings pressed firmly is challenging.

    brewbellyblueberry ,

I’d say it’s easier, already because there are less strings so the amount of fingers needed and frets to press are less. Like you can play an E minor chord with just one finger on one string. The standard tuning is like the highest 4 strings of a normal guitar. I’d say the size can make it softer on the fingers as well. Other than that it’s literally just a tiny guitar. Plus you van get one for pocket change or even a decent one for less than a 100€/€. Also because it’s so small you can take it literally anywhere.

    Corkyskog ,

It’s already bought…(I have an addiction to collecting instrumenta for some reason) got a cheap starter for like $70. I am pumped for it to come in. I feel like there is a chance I could play some basic things on it after researching the chords adjustment and some tabs for certain songs. Perfect timing because my daughter just had an operation, so now she can hear sound perfectly, where before it was muffled.

At what age do you start them? She isn’t 2 yet, so probably some time.

    brewbellyblueberry ,

Haha perfect. Glad she can hear now. But lol yeah, maybe a little early to start.

Honestly I wouldn’t know really, I think it’s all kind of subjective. My nephews started expressing interest anywhere from 4-12 years old. Exposure can/will help though usually. The nephews and nieces that saw and heard me or my BIL play more got interested earlier. A ukulele is kind of automatically in an open tuning so you can just strum or pick the strings without even doing anything with the fret hand and it sounding nice can encourage them to learn more - when you can just make something that sounds nice with minimal effort it will make it easier to apporach. I didn’t even teach them any chords at first. Just kind of show like, how much you can do with just going up and down one string with even just one finger can make something that sounds nice. Kids are still developing the muscles their fingers and motor functions, just like adults who don’t play or use their fingers in such a way, but I think it might be even harder for kids. I can remember a hundred times I almost gave up be cause it was just too hard physically to hold the chords, especially on an oversized classical guitar for tiny child hands.

Like you can even try for yourself. You don’t even need to tune the uke differently, just strum the open strings and then go up and down a basic scale on the highest pitched (E) string (on the bottom of the neck): 0-2-3-5-7-8-10-12 frets, in different variations and find a melody. You don’t need to do anything with any other string, just strum the open strings along with that one string. Just as an example. From there just expand the same mentality to other strings and start using more fingers. Too much theory can kill any interest very quickly and personally I think it’s such an ass-backwards way to approach music. Like learning grammar and how to write before learning to speak.

    Corkyskog ,

Oh I agree with basically everything you wrote. If my parents had just bought me a guitar earlier in life, instead of doing it when I was almost a teenager and pushing me into classic lessons. I hated everything about those lessons.

I am hoping my daughter will have a vastly different experience, then I had.

    brewbellyblueberry ,

Sounds like she’s already off to a better start even before starting then! Hope you both have fun learning and sharing the love for music.

I didn’t even have a teacher, I just had a couple of books, and thought that was the only way to learn so I pushed myself to strain my hands and my head to figure it out because I really wanted to learn and it really fucked my hands up for decades leading to further and further problems with advancing. After over two decades I finally corrected my hand position and well, ergonomy and everything became so much easier. Problems I wouldn’t have had if I’d had proper teaching or even a proper instrument for my tiny hands. Carpal tunnel is no fun, especially when the number one thing you want to do is play. If only someone had told me the things I know now.

    Corkyskog ,

So what’s the correct hand positioning? I was playing it flat like a crab claw. But some youtuber teaching uke chords, says you need to rest your thumb on the neck and use your fingers to press directly down in a C shape. Would you say that’s good advice? Definitely puts more pressure on the fingers.

    brewbellyblueberry , (edited )

Oh it’s hard to explain through text but definitely don’t hold your thumb on/over the neck. Your fret hand should be same or similar as playing guitar. Your thumb should be usually pretty much “on the spine”/middle of the neck. If that feels uncomfortable, you might be holding the guitar awkwardly/wrong. Check out how people instruct you to hold classical/Spanish guitar, because that’s literally like guitar ergonomy 101.

My problems with my fret hand were mostly related to having too wide a neck for my hands which led to over stressing my fret hand, pressing too hard and having my wrist at an awkward angle. Which led to pressing even harder which led to wrist pain and overall difficulty reaching everywhere I was supposed to. Things you should take into consideration but not necessarily stress if you’re just playing to chill, but I was ambitious from the get go.

The way you describe “crab claw” sounds about right, but you can check out classical/Spanish guitar + wrist + ergonomy on YouTube or something if you want to. Your wrist should be fairly straight and you definitely can’t do that if you’re having your thumb over the neck. As little as your nerves and tendons and shit need to stretch unnecessarily, that’s the sweet spot. Look at how classical guitarists play. They have the guitar at an angle for a reason, because they’re kind of going to the extremes of the mobility of the fingers and tendons etc, and even if you aren’t, a more ergonomic stance is only going to do you good

E: almost forgot. It might do you good, especially for something as small as a Ukulele, to get a strap. It can be difficult to hold and fret and do all of that at the same time. A strap can make it a lot easier/automatic for the instrument to stay in a good position so as not to strain your wrists

    Sheeple ,
    @Sheeple@lemmy.world avatar

Oh yeah almond milk REALLY is not an eco friendly option. Your buddy is right on that. It doesn’t help that Almonds are usually grown in countries that are poorer, exploiting them and draining them (even more) of their water supply without paying them.

There’s an entire metaphorical water mafia going on that effectively steals water from third world countries while using underpaid (and sometimes even slave) labor. Almonds are one of the things said water is used for.

Even from an animal rights perspective that’s messed up because of human mistreatment.

    poppy ,

Almond milk uses tons of water compared to other plant milks, but still much better than cow milk at least.

    www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-46654042

I have a hard time finding oat milk without added sugar, and I also find it expires much faster than almond milk. I get unsweetened oat milk if I think I’ll be able to go through it quickly enough otherwise I have to dump like more than 50% which feels like a waste in a different way.

    LinkOpensChest_wav ,
    @LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’m pretty neutral about oat milk. I have celiac disease, so I eat a lot of gluten free oats as a grain, and so I can taste more oatiness in oat milk. For instance, I eat a lot of Cheerios, which are primarily oats, and putting oat milk on top is not the perfect complement. Soy or rice milk balance flavor better imo.

Now, if I were to make a latte, then yeah oat milk all the way! But I don’t really drink lattes, and I’ve never really drank much straight-up milk. It’s mostly a cereal condiment for me. And half my family is Mexican, so if I’m going to drink a non-dairy beverage, it’s probably going to be horchata which is pretty much rice, cinnamon, and sugar.

But I’m relieved to hear that almond milk is at least not as wasteful as regular dairy. That’s no surprise though, given how horribly unethical and destructive the dairy industry is, at least where I live in the US.

I tried oat milk. While it tastes good, IMO it tastes nothing like milk. The closest description I could give for the taste being “cereal juice”

It’s an interesting cooking ingredient though. Certainly has its own unique flavor. It’s also a nice refresher drink.

My biggest gripe with oat milk is that it isn’t as “filling” as the alternatives. It’s a drink, not a food. So when I try to 1:1 use it as a substitute it can leave me feeling sick (example, my morning coffee which I load with milk to get me started)

TLDR: be mindful of the fact that it’s VERY different from milk, even if oat milk tastes good.

    kWazt ,

I’d recommend not substituting 1:1. If you go easy on the oat milk to coffee ratio, you’ll have a better experience. IMHO, oat doesn’t alter the taste experience of coffee as much as the other stuff, which is my foremost reason for preferring it.

    Sheeple ,
    @Sheeple@lemmy.world avatar

Oh I like lots of it. To a point I make my coffee stronger than most people just to counter how much I dilute it using milk. Think like a 50% water 50% milk ratio. Sometimes 70/30 if I feel like having it stronger.

Apartment got a free upgrade to Cat6a (which they never even knew about, because I wasn’t going to lose a deposit over something stupid like “unapproved upgrades”) and I got my tasty gigabit.

I was trying to download Red Dead Redemption 2. It was like 120GB, and was going to take hours at 10Mbps on the existing Cat5. I quickly said “fuck that, I can run new lines in 45 minutes and have the download done in 20 minutes with gigabit.” Sure enough, about an hour later, I was playing my game.

I had whatb I assumed was a fault modem/router from the isp and one of the ports ran at 100mbps while the other ran at 1000. I figured this out when it took forever to transfer a file that was just a few gb.

I have zero experience with networking hardware. How hard is it to recable an apartment for a newb like me? How does that even work, do I gotta pull wires out of the walls?

    Guest_User ,

Adding new connectors means you only need about an inch extra on each side. Very low skill required if you have the (cheap) tools to do it. Actually putting new wires in place is a bit harder but still fairly easy. Attach some string to the old cable, pull it all the way through the walls. Attach the new cable to the string, then pull that through the walls. Then just add the connectors like the other scenario.

Pull the new cables taped to the old cables, no need for the string step.

If the holes are sized for a single ethernet cable, you won’t be able to pull through two. If your confident holes are all oversized, sure go for it. Otherwise you risk getting it stuck half way through a wall and pulling the two cables apart

    A7thStone ,

Fair point. I’m an electrician by trade so i hate it people drill holes that small, but it does happen.

    sznio ,

No pulling wires from walls, just cutting the ends off and installing new connectors. Might not be enough in every case though.

Crimping took me like 5 attempts to get right when I learned it in school.

Replacing connectors is east, but won’t solve your problem if the issue is bad cables in the walls. Pulling new cables entirely depends on how well they were installed. A lazy install will actually be much easier to replace, because a lazy installer won’t bother stapling cables in place. They’ll just run the cables across the attic/crawl space and leave it where it lands.

If you’re lucky and got a lazy installer, then you can be equally lazy; The old cable in the wall is going to be your pull line for your new cable. Step 1 is figuring out which lines are which. This is easier with something like a cable sniffer, but there are a few ways to do it. But assuming you know which cables are which, the rest is fairly straightforward.

Use electrical tape to affix the old cable to the new one. Just make a bend on each cable, hook the resulting bends together, then wrap them tightly with electrical tape. The bends hooked together allow the cable to hold the strain, rather than the adhesive on the tape. And you want to use electrical tape because it stretches. Pulling it tight when you wrap ensures that the tape will compress the cables with every wrap. You also want to try to make the connection as “smooth” as possible, so it won’t snag on anything when you pull it.

Now that the old cable is attached to the new, just grab the other end of the old cable and start pulling. It’ll drag the new cable through the wall for you as you pull it out of the wall. Fair warning this is much easier if you have someone feeding the new cable in as you pull, to ensure it doesn’t snag on anything as it enters the wall. It also only reliably works on installs without a lot of bends and corners; Every corner you have to pull around is another potential corner to get snagged on. If you get snagged, sometimes pulling it backwards (tugging on the new cable entering the wall) can help you reset to try again. But sometimes there’s no replacement for good old fashioned legwork; If you get really stuck, or your tape comes undone, or your cable breaks from the strain, you may need to go crawling around your attic to fix it. This is a fast method, but it’s not 100% reliable.

Make sure to get pass-through RJ45 connectors.

It’s 10x easier to trim the excess after crimping, rather than getting the lengths spot on before.

I remember running out of those at work, & intentionally crushing the cheap-ass crimp-tool in my hand, just so I could finish up the next day with pass-through connectors & my Klein tool, rather than spend the next two hours re-terminating connectors that I ‘should have’ gotten exactly right the first time.

Dunno, I have no problems with regular RJ45 connectors.

    geekworking ,

This is why Pro level is to terminate all of your permanent cabling with punch down jacks and patch panels, then use throw-away patch cables from jacks to devices.

    A7thStone ,

Look at mr moneybags with their fancy data closet.

    PersnickityPenguin ,

It’s not that expensive… you can buy a home punch down board for cheap, just need some space. You don’t need an actual rack.

    geekworking ,

All of money and downtime I save from replacing broken RJ45 plugs more than covers the $10 tool and extra $2 that it costs for a keystone jack and wall mount box.

I have a collection of 3d prints on thingiverse that reattach that part. Highly recommend.

    Crimp tool: 2$

    100 RJ45: 3$

Your problem will be solved for rest of you life and life of your children for 5 dollars.
