When I first saw her casting, I was doubtful. But she was spectacular and completely flipped my opinion. Same with Amos. They producers really did a great job finding great actors.

It actually serves as a decent trick for learning the language settings on the app of a person who’s profile you’re viewing.

TWeaK , in The color test

Fun fact, most people in the world are trichromats, they have 3 types of colour sensors in their eyes. One type of colourblindness that only affects men is where they only have 2 types of sensor and are dichromats - the gene is only found in the X chromosome, and it’s impossible for women with two X chromosomes to get the deficiency. However, it’s possible for women to get super genes and have 4 types of sensor, making them quadchromats. These ladies can see colours in between two other colours, that no one else can see. However, because the world is built by and for trichromats, this gift goes by largely unknown even by the people who have it.

Remmock ,

It’s not actually called quadchromatism but tetrachromatism.

AeroLemming ,

I don’t have this condition, but just guessing: couldn’t you eventually figure it out if you noticed that cameras (which just use RGB) couldn’t capture certain distinct colors that you could see?

ornery_chemist , (edited )

This is not true. That women cannot have the congenital dichromacy (or anomalous trichromacy) that biological males commonly have is flat out wrong. A biological female can still be a protan or deutan, but the phenotype requires that both X chromosomes carry the recessive color vision-deficient alleles. Nevertheless, given that ~8% of all X chromosomes have such a gene regardless of sex, the incidence in the female population is still around half a percent, which is not insignificant.

Interestingly, one form of tetrachromacy in females actually has the same cause as color vision deficiency in some males (specifically anomalous trichromacy). From what I understand, only one X chromosome is active per cone cell, and which one is active is random. So, half of such a person’s cone cells of one type are “normal” while the rest of that type are anomalous and have a slightly different peak wavelength. The net result is four different types of cone cells, i.e., tetrachromacy, which may have an incidence of more than 10% in females.

sndrtj ,

X-inactivation is a little bit more complicated than that. While the process of X-inactivation initiation is random, once a cell has settled on one chromosome, all its daughter cells will silence the same chromosome. The initial process happens in the early embryo, so large patches of the body have the same X chromosome silenced.

This pattern is visible in some animals. E.g. a tortoise cat’s pattern arises due to the hair color gene existing on the X chromosome. Consequently, male tortoise cats are rare (XXY, XXXY etc only)

ornery_chemist ,

Neat, thanks for the clarification. Even though the initial proportion is 50/50 for X-activation, are there scenarios where one daughter line is more prominent than the other, or does it usually remain 50/50?

sndrtj ,

Statistics would indicate that that is a plausible scenario.

In addition, a uniparental disomy can occur as well. Here, the X chromosome was duplicated in the egg cell. So the exact same X chromosome is inherited twice. This is an error in meiosis. This could occur in XXX (with the third X from the father’s side), XXY, or even XX. That latter one would be rare, for a uniparental disomy on X without a third sex chromosome would mean both egg and sperm cell had an error during meiosis.

You could also see a single X (Turner Syndrome) as a 100% dominant X-chromosome. But that may be semantics.

Psythik ,

I once knew a girl who was colorblind. Both her parents were too. It’s rare but it can happen.

driving_crooner ,

joel_feila ,

the gene for red green color blindness is carried on the X chromosome so a woman can have it it is just very rare. Now blue yellow color blindness is much much rarer and carried on a different chromosome so men and women have it equally

TheRealKuni ,

It is possible for women to be colorblind (if their father is colorblind and their mother is a carrier for the gene).

It is also possible for men to be tetrachromats if they have XXY genes (called Klinefelter syndrome).

Do people think that having 4 criminal cases pending against you is meaningless? Like… This is accurate and prosecutions are moving forward. The fuck do you want? That’s how it works.

roboticide ,

I assume it’s just the pace, but overall there’s plenty of reasons to be frustrated.

There’s already talk about how some of these cases might not be resolved until after the election, at which point, depending on how it goes, could be extremely problematic.

It feels frustrating because it’s mid-2023, and we may “run out of time” by end of 2024. People ask what the fuck was happening for 2.5 years? The reality of course is justice is not always, nor necessarily should be swift, and getting these investigations even started takes time to say nothing of collecting evidence and putting together a case. But also, 20 years ago even a single criminal indictment probably would have spelled the end of a Presidential campaign, and instead, Trump is successfully fundraising off of these charges and leading the polls.

It’s all just bonkers.

Nioxic ,

Yep. Its a slow process.

They are collecting evidence. Witness statements and such.

They are NOT rushing this. It would be a shitshow.

demlet , in Well...that was anticlimactic

I mean, setting aside the lack of actual evidence so far, what effect will it have on most of us? Is the world suddenly going to become a utopia because aliens have been here? At best we get some cool technology that governments and the rich will hoard; at worst we get conscripted to go kill them and take their shit, or are forced to defend ourselves from them trying to take our shit. I’ve never really understood why aliens imply anything other than that. The truth is, if they do have something truly transcendent to teach us, we ain’t ready for it. If we want to find the secrets of the universe we need to put our own house in order and do it ourselves. Aliens aren’t our space saviors.

ihwip ,

The fact that they haven’t made contact with the entire globe in a way that is undisputable etc is proof that they are mostly apathetic.

This is why they mostly stick to military bases with nukes. Even their offensive technology is apathetic. Disrupting our electronics etc. They clearly don’t care.

With that said should we really call them aliens? Chances are they have been here longer than the entire history of the hominid line.

demlet ,

Or maybe proof that, you know, they aren’t here and never were…

peanut_boy ,

Why does everything need to have personal gain to matter at all. I get the whole “no actual evidence” part. But if we actually see aliens and you’re not impressed, I don’t think we can be friends. Don’t blame capitalism, you’re just lame. Sure, there are real problems, but people throughout history have had it far worse and still managed to care about things outside of their own tiny microcosm. Many people enjoy these things not in spite of but because of their personal struggles, as they can act as an escape for a short time. If you’re going to have economic troubles anyway, why spend all your time dwelling in it?

demlet ,

True, it would be amazing. I’m just ambivalent about the long-term impact. Like, would much really change ultimately? I guess we’ve never experienced another species we could directly communicate ideas with. Maybe it would be more revolutionary than I can imagine.

BeMoreCareful ,

I don’t think that person is talking about their personal thoughts, but more mankind as a whole.

As we operate now we would not have to tools to add anything meaningful to a galactic conversation.

We could all personally think it’s awesome, but as a people we are simply unequipped to deal with the consequences of meeting an extraterrestrial race.

People are sort of great individually, but collectively we’re horrific. We’d be trying to kill, enslave, or exploit any new species we came across. It’s what we do with new species. Hell it’s what we do to each other.

ElectricAirship ,
@ElectricAirship@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Religions would have to wreckon with a lot of their foundations…

Phen ,

“have to” is a bit strong. Religions ignore inconvenient truths about the world all the time. If aliens were confirmed to exist it wouldn’t be different. >

bumblychicken ,

Would they though? I feel like the biggest ones would accommodate this revelation. “Yes, extraterrestrials exist but WE are God’s chosen species” Same reason a lot of animals don’t get into heaven lol
