You can’t take the inventory out of Skyrim and it still be Skyrim. That’s where half the fun and shenanigans come from. Did you play Fable 3? They tried removing the inventory and the game sucked and the series died.
There has to be another way, like what if you used speech to narrate your actions like in dnd. “I grab a potion from my pocket” “I dip my arrow in poison” etc
Some text-based adventures from the late 90s and early 2000’s allowed you to do just that. I can even remember a couple that were the precursors to MMO’s, but back then they were called MUDs, short for Multi-User Dungeons.
I suppose those could be iterated on with modern voice technology and language models.
I want someone to revisit MUDs, but integrate Chat GPT with it and just make it better in every way. I know it can be done because I’ve tricked GPT into starting a MUD and it was awesome and Legend of Zelda TOTK themed before the game launched.
fusion of Ocarina of time and skyrim. Giant map, bunch of long sidequests, tons of spaces to explore from skyrim, beautiful world, actual content in sidequests, puzzles, straightforward inventory. It’d be more than just this, I’m imaging you get two or three weapon slots, and like 10 possible weapons with some from the atart/starting area and others only accessible from sidequest completion. They don’t break except for in plot circumstances(like a villain breaks/steals your sword in a questline, but that’s so you can get a different one at the end of it). Every puzzle could be solved in a way you could do it in real life, not one mechanic to the puzzle. For example, if there’s vines you need to get rid of, you can burn them if you have a fire weapon, or cut them with a strong enough sword, or get a gardener to deal with them. I’d also want it so you could theoretically kill anyone, but there would be consequences. kill someone central to a sidequest and you have to find a way to work around their absence, or it ends and everyone is pissed at you. You can kill a child but every NPC will hate you and you won’t be able to start any more quests, and the stronger ones will try to kill or imprison you. There’d also be meaning to the positions you get. you can become head of the thieves guild if you want and do the quest, but you have to keep doing thief quests, actually plan heists and deal with problems within the members, as well as challengers to your position. I kinda like the idea of there not being a main quest, just a giant world full of places to go and people to see. Basically, I want a game that actually does something with the idea of an open world adventure game other than an adventure game with an empty but giant map.
Mod Nation Racers on PS4, you could do custom track. It was a really fun game and I liked the fact that you could defend yourself a little bit from items if you had enough boost and a good timing. Really had fun with that game.
Not the same kind of racing game, but Aero GPX is shaping up to be an excellent F-Zero successor that is going to have a fully customisable track creator.
There’s a huge modding scene for Mario Kart Wii, and lots of custom tracks. There’s also several track compilations. One of the most well-known is Wiimms Mario Kart Fun which currently has 449 custom tracks. It runs on a real Wii as well as in emulators. My wife and I used to play it a lot.
The tracks are made by various community members, but the compilation itself is made by Wiimm, the same guy that made the Wiimmfi service that lets you race people online even after Nintendo shut down the official servers.
The physical Mario Kart Switch game with the WiFi controlled carts - except it’s 100 % AR instead, and you can switch between 3rd person overhead AR view from your own position or 1st person view (VR-like) from the kart. You create your own tracks in the room you’re in.
And while we at it, I want a Sonic Maker game, which kinda like Super Mario Maker but for Sonic stages. Would be even cooler if the players can create a 3D Boost Sonic-styled stages too, in addition to the 2D Classic Sonic-styled stages.
A wizard duel game. 1v1. The gimmick is that you have to do the somatic (arm waving) component for your spells to fire. Could work with VR controllers or even a Kinect. The longer your arm travels, the stronger the spell becomes. You, as a wizard, can “create” a list of somatic components and attribute them to an effect, like “fire” or “darkness” or “lightning”. By mixing and matching your waving, you could cast a variety of spells with different effects, like a lightning bolt that sets the enemy on fire and engulfs them in darkness. To avoid being hit, you could either finish a counterspell faster, hit the enemy with an appropriately strong spell (at least 1 somatic component less than his current casting) or set up shields that will absorb a number of damage before dissipating.
To make the game fancy, you’d be able to customize your wizard and your wizard tower, both of which would be the centerpieces of the duel. Everything you’d unlock through gameplay, no battlepass bullshit, no microtransactions, no bullshit grind to make it last longer than it should.
Damn that would be so cool! It’s an excellent idea. And it doesn’t seem too farfetched (I have no idea tho), but I can see it as one of the next big things. You are on to something man. Also, username checks out.
Magica on the PC had a really great intuitive spell system that was a “minute to learn, lifetime to master” sort of thing. I also played it with a controller, and found it lacking. But something like that PvP would be fun without waving your arms for 15 minutes at a time.
bonus points if it starts with you as an american conscript being ordered to his death with an impossible mission that makes halo 2 jackals look easy, and the way you progress (that the game doesn’t tell you) is to frag your officer before it switches to the NVA perspective you play the rest of the story.
First half hour is you being a super cool highly trained american spec ops guy being sent behind enemy lines, only to get murked by the actual mc, some guy who used to be a teacher turned nva who now has to fight against the imperialists
Sounds cool. I feel like people would lose their shit if a game like that was made. I can just imagine the media shit storm. Conservatives would find themselves suddenly ardently defending the Vietnam War. Again.
Rolling Line is the closest game I’ve seen to being a true model railroading simulator. You can build layouts with few restrictions and control trains in third person. The low-poly art style can make it seem like it’s not very detailed, but it’s possible to make some great layouts on Rolling Line. You do have to build some things manually though, not quite like Cities: Skylines or Transport Fever where you can simply draw out a track in five seconds.
Haven’t tried it on a Steam Deck, but it works just fine on PC. You certainly don’t have to get VR for it. The low poly art is a slight annoyance, but I think that the game makes up for it by giving you a lot of freedom in actually building the layout.
A demolition derby game like wreckfest but without the racing. Leveling, gear, competitions are all focused on destroying other cars and being last one standing.
Bonus if some shenanigans are allowed like you get out of your car and fight other drivers.
You are kind of inluck, there are a couple of PlayStation 1 games called Destruction Derby which is exactly this. The graphics are terrible compared to todays fare but they were fun
Don’t know how I missed this one when I had a PS1 but it would have definitely have been up my alley back in the day. Maybe I’ll get around to getting an emulator for my PC to pick it up again. Could be fun getting back into those old games again - I wouldn’t mind picking up the old Metal Gear 2 game again.
As in… You fight on the usual 3 lane DotA style map with towers, jungle, a main base, etc. but you control a small platoon of units you produce from a barracks instead of a champion. Your supply limit starts at 15 but can go up to a small army (maybe a cap of 50) by late game.
Your main form of income comes from killing minions, creeps, jungle camps, towers, etc.
I originally wanted to make it as a StarCraft II custom map but the map editor is more complex than actual fucking game dev software to use.
Footman Frenzy was more about automatically massing units, buying upgrades and building deathballs. Unit compositions and counters would matter a lot more here.
This game would be more about consciously chosing what units to build and using them to fight against the enemy.
Let’s say for example… one player had two siege tanks backed by a small force of marines, marauders and medivacs. You’d fight it with two lurkers and some roaches/hydralisks.
An actual good survival zombie MMO. Ala what day z and h1z1 were supposed to be. H1z1 had the idea to be a procedurally generated middle america setting that sounded amazing. But it turned into a battle royal. Day Z was supposed to be the hardcore survival zombie but it’s too just turned into essentially a battle royal. I don’t know. I know there has been so many in that genre but I don’t feel like any of the ones I’ve played hit it right. 7 days to die is maybe the closest and I also really liked project zomboid too. I guess I thought dayz captured the realism of the combat with it’s arma roots.
A single-player fantasy game with no skill points/upgrades beyond equipment. I want the entirety of the progression to be the skills of the player. You end up losing fights to more than one goblin at a time, but then you learn to start dealing with groups. A long enough time pasts and you’re slaughtering hordes of enemy like clockwork. But if someone took control of your character they’d still lose to a goblin or two.
I want something where split second reaction times and skill determine how a fight goes. Both me and the enemy should be able to kill each other in 2-3 seconds given the right circumstances. I want extremely punishing mechanics for both enemies and the player. Something like a first-person Hotline Miami but with really good swordplay.
You literally just described dark souls and what has become the entire souls-like genre, though to be honest I’ve played dozens of souls-likes and most of them fail completely at it. Just play dark souls.
Skill points in dark souls are helpful but entirely unnecessary. See the wealth of Soul Level 1 runs on YouTube if you don’t believe me. I’ve personally completed the 2nd and 3rd games without adding a single skill point, and I’m definitely not that good. But yes, Sekiro fits the bill also.
I mean yeah, I guess they’re optional if you’re already an expert in the game’s mechanics. Level 1 DS runs are pretty niche, and someone who is clearly new to the genre entirely isn’t going to start playing like that. For most people, “builds” are what Dark Souls games are all about.
“Works fine” yeah ok. Give a newbie a copy of DS1 and tell them they’re not allowed to level up. See how long they play.
Like we get it, you’re good at the hard video game. This person wasn’t asking to be tortured, and I don’t think “play Dark Souls (for the first time) and just ignore the leveling system,” is a good suggestion for anybody, let alone someone who seems wholly unfamiliar with the genre.
Holy fuck dude LET IT GO. This has nothing to do with “newbies”. Did you even read the fucking OP? When I answered a simple question I didn’t expect to be harassed by a butthurt baby that just couldn’t git gud. I don’t think you should be on the Internet. It’s clear you can’t handle it.
I’ve loved Bully every time I’ve replayed it. Not because of the gameplay, certainly - it hasn’t aged well. But the story, characters, and ambience of the town was indeed unique and remains so. I can’t think of another game since that’s similar in tone.
