Your favorite video game doesn't need a remake | Digital Trends (www.digitaltrends.com)

Curious about y’alls opinions on this. I like the idea of getting new people to experience an older game by aligning it to modern graphics and accessibility standards. But capitalizing on nostalgia with quick updates to that make it look modern rather than making new games seems like just more of studios trying to squeeze...

If You're An Adventure Game Fan, Duck Detective is For You! (youtu.be)

Duck Detective is a fantastic adventure game that hearkens back to the days of point and clicks. It’s got all of the charm, wit, excellent writing, and clever deduction-based puzzles you’d expect from a game during the prime of the genre. This retro styled adventure comedy game is one of my favorite games of 2024.

restingboredface ,

Got it right after launch. It is fantastic. Puzzles are fun, characters and plot are entertaining, and it’s just frickin adorable. It’s really short- I’m hoping because the dev team is releasing additional cases later, but right now you just solve one case. I finished it in an evening taking it slowly. I don’t regret paying full price, but I definitely want more. Would recommend for sure.

Isn’t it interesting that the only thing a CEO ever gets arrested for is a crime that hurts investors?

restingboredface ,

Such a great movie. Haven’t watched that in years. Might have to dust that one off this weekend.

From the article: In 2011 Hillis was asked why he worked on the clock instead of his biotech startup for cancer research. He said: “I think this is the most important thing I can work on. More than cancer. Over the long run, I think this will make more difference to more people.”

Am I the only one that thinks this guy is a bit out of touch?

restingboredface ,

This sounds amazing! The combination is brilliant.

restingboredface ,

Yep. Even if he was concerned he wouldn’t want to express that publicly, because his teams would all start jumping ship. Then he’d have an actual delivery problem on his hands and the chance of closure would be much higher.

That said, any studio owned by Microsoft should be worried. They demonstrated that even producing popular, highly-acclaimed games isn’t enough for them, so there doesn’t seem to be a way to keep them happy.

restingboredface ,

My credit got tanked years ago for a $95 doctor visit bill I was disputing that got sent to collections. Took me years to repair my credit. I spent most of my twenties with credit well below 600 and unable to get even small increases to my credit.

I hope this goes through and others don’t have to deal with this kind of crap (or worse) because of the mess that is credit reporting.

restingboredface ,

I wouldn’t be surprised if they charged him a cancelation fee.

restingboredface ,

It depends. Many vegans see any product that “exploits” animals as nonvegan. That includes things like down feathers, wool and honey.

restingboredface ,

I look forward to Apple Marketing coming up with their usual line of nonsense, like a meaningless name for an existing capability that they are claiming to have invented.

restingboredface ,

Guys, seriously. The entire Affinity Suite is $150. Paid for updates through the current version. It’s solid.

Dump Adobe.

restingboredface ,

Nice! I got it right after the latest version came out but that’s been a while. They do sales pretty regularly though. It’s definitely not as massive as Adobe wrt features, but they cover the essentials well.

restingboredface ,

Excited to see more updates coming to Cult of the Lamb. I enjoyed the hell out of the main campaign and recent update.

Tried the Anger Foot demo a while back and it was okay. I may grab the full version depending on price. The aethetic is fun and interesting and the kicking mechanic is pretty satisfying.

restingboredface ,

Holy shit what a ride that was.

It’s clear from a lot of stories like this (severe customer mistreatment) that United employees are miserable people who hate their jobs but this is nuts. I hope Dr. Dao got a huge settlement from United.

restingboredface ,

I don’t have much direct experience working in agile since I tend to work on the business side but I can tell you that the term agile is WAY overused. So many projects are described as agile when they are just waterfall with more steps. Leaders love to say they are working in agile because it sounds ‘techy’ and cool, but I don’t think they fully appreciate what it is vs other methods. I wonder if a lot of the failed projects described in the article are some of those agile in name only kind of things.

restingboredface ,

The story in Horizon Forbidden West is pretty good too. There’s a whole bit in the dlc about Ted Faro that I did not see coming, but it makes me think a lot of the tech bros running things today.

restingboredface ,

The title of this article is misleading. It’s actually a nice summary in how AI firms have conveniently forgotten their own warnings and predictions of the dangers of AI now that they no longer need to use that messaging in making pitches to investors.

restingboredface ,

My thinking is that it reads like the author is dismissing the whole notion that AI has risks and that the folks raising concerns were just repeating an overblown doomsday narrative.

That’s what I thought and I expected to see a lot of promoting for the shiny new things and dismissing safety efforts as dampening innovation.

restingboredface ,

He should pull an FDR and try to get the court expanded to 12.

restingboredface ,

Yeah agreed. I never quite understood FDRs thinking on putting an even number of people in the court. We have so many 5-4 decisions now an even court would be chaos.

restingboredface ,

Took a job recently after being unemployed for a while. Three days in the office, but only 15 minute commute. Nobody from my team in the city, and nobody I will ever need to work with works in this office. I have almost nothing to do so I’ve been filling my days doing training on our products. My floor has probably 100 or so cubes with about 20-25 people on on any given day on the whole floor. I sit in a wing of a building with 4 cubes and mine’s the only one in use. I go pretty much the whole day without seeing or speaking to another individual.

At least when I worked from home I had my dogs to keep me company. Now i just get in, counting the minutes until I hit 8 hours and leave asap. I’m seriously considering resigning because I’m going nuts.

RTO sucks.

restingboredface ,

Yes unfortunately. Managers get a Tableau report weekly based on badge use (not sure if badge out is included). I’m going to see how things go over the next week or two but I may just have to talk to her and tell her this isn’t working and offer to go remote or leave.

restingboredface ,

No, not dell. Always a bummer to learn other places doing this too though. Every time I see a company is pushing hard on the RTO stuff they just get crossed of my job search list.

restingboredface ,

I don’t understand why this isn’t discussed more openly by studios and publishers. Instead, they all seem to be trying to milk more money from the teets of and gen z gamers who are worried about things like buying a home or even paying for groceries. They keep driving more games to live service, or paid DLCs that 20 years ago would have been part of the base game or free updates. Why not go for a new market instead of fighting over the little money that most younger gamers have to spend?

restingboredface ,

I saw that too. Does that mean Masino made the 5 pt plan, announced it and then bounced to Taco Bell?

Or is this just shitty writing and lazy editing?

restingboredface ,

T mobiles service has been degrading since they acquired Sprint. I imagine this will only make it worse.

restingboredface ,

Yeah, but the non-tech savvy business leaders see they can generate code with AI and think ‘why do I need a developer if I have this AI?’ and have no idea whether the code it produces is right or not. This stat should be shared broadly so leaders don’t overestimate the capability and fire people they will desperately need.

restingboredface ,

Thr problem the AI tools are going to have is that they will have tons of things like this that they won’t catch and be able to fix. Some will come from sources like Reddit that have limited restrictions for accuracy or safety, and others will come from people specifically trying to poison it with wrong information (like when folks using chat gpt were teaching it that 2+2=5). Fixing only the ones that get media attention is a losing battle. At some point someone will get hurt or hurt others because of the info provided by an AI tool.

restingboredface ,

This is great news. Hopefully a sign of more to come.

restingboredface ,

Plus they are bleeding money from all the acquisitions and haven’t seen the return they expected in game pass subs. The cost cutting isn’t done and it would be very surprising for them to try to dump more money into new storefronts when they are still trying to make their own business model profitable (to their expectations).

restingboredface ,

Biden has come a long way from the good old days of “Diamond Joe”. I’m so disappointed in him for how he’s handling this.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs admits he beat ex-girlfriend Cassie: ‘I take full responsibility’ (www.theguardian.com)

The rap mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs admitted in a video apology that he punched and kicked his ex-girlfriend in 2016 in the hallway of a hotel after CNN released footage of the attack, saying he was “truly sorry” and his actions were “inexcusable”....

restingboredface ,

He works for a marketing and web design firm. So the guy who designed their graphics is gone and they are using AI tools. Imagine paying for a firm to build you web and marketing materials only to have someone just use an AI.

Why bother paying the marketing firm at all?

restingboredface ,

Good. Hopefully AG Asshat will have to spend more money to keep the racists from splitting the vote and he will have less for the general election (or not even get through the primary).

Texas attorney general probes connected-car companies’ data privacy practices (therecord.media)

At least four car companies’ data collection and sharing practices are under investigation by the Texas attorney general’s office for potentially violating state law on deceptive trade practices, according to documents obtained by Recorded Future News....

restingboredface ,

Yeah it makes me immediately suspicious of what they are up to over there.

restingboredface ,

And then there’s XCOM… which thankfully 2 is amazing.

Really? It wouldn’t play on my machine back when it first came out so I returned it and never went back after seeing a ton of negative reviews about the timed missions. Did they update that part or was the bad feedback overblown?

restingboredface ,

Oh awesome. I’ll have to try it again. I have a couple hundred hours in xcom 1 and play long war from time to time. Exciting to have a ‘new’ game to play!

restingboredface ,

I wonder if Open AI or any of the other firms have thought to put in any kind of stipulations about monitoring and moderating reddit content to reduce ai generated posts and reduce risk of model collapse.

Anybody who’s looked at reddit in the past 2 years especially has seen the impact of ai pretty clearly. If I was running open ai I wouldn’t want that crap contaminating my models.

restingboredface ,

I don’t get why anyone likes eating super spicy foods. After a certain level of heat there is no more flavor, just spice, and it clearly can cause serious problems for your body. What is the draw?

restingboredface ,

They must have fucked up some mundane detail like misplacing a zero or something.

restingboredface ,

It’s an interesting way to manage the guilt of sending so many men and women to their deaths for nothing.

US airlines are suing the Biden administration over a new rule to make certain fees easier to spot (apnews.com)

U.S. airlines are suing to block the Biden administration from requiring greater transparency over fees that the carriers charge their passengers, saying that a new rule would confuse consumers by giving them too much information during the ticket-buying process....

restingboredface ,

One of the reasons I’ve stood by them- they are generally already pretty transparent in their pricing. It’s a no frills airline to be sure, but it’s nice to fly with people who seem to be genuinely happy to be working where they are.

restingboredface ,

What are you talking about? AI is going to save countless money and make everyone better at their jobs!

More children gain hearing as gene therapy for profound deafness advances | Ars Technica (arstechnica.com)

There are few things more heartwarming than videos of children with deafness gaining the ability to hear, showing them happily turning their heads at the sound of their parents’ voices and joyfully bobbing to newly discovered music. Thanks to recent advances in gene therapy, more kids are getting those sweet and triumphant...

restingboredface ,

I wrote a paper on the whole reddit 3rd party app fiasco and because of the accessibility issues being raised I spent some time reading through r/blind and r/deaf. I didn’t find it in the blind community but the deaf community seemed to have very strong opinions about medical interventions to restore hearing, and a lot were vehemently against it in all cases.

I think technology like this will be a contentious issue for them.

restingboredface ,

I hope this spreads to all Olympic sports so our teams each get a hype man (or lady), preferably an old school rap artist.

restingboredface ,

If people want to make computer characters date they should just save themselves the trouble and get the Sims.

restingboredface ,

Some interesting info in this article. If game pass hasn’t really paid off (in maintaining growth of new or recurring users), this may be an indication that they will make some changes to it.
