I’ve noticed young people improperly using the word demure lately.

Has education really gotten so bad that learning a single, common 15-year-old-reading-level word means they have to keep using it over and over again?

I hate AI, but here it’s a bit understandable why copilot says that. If you ask the same thing to someone else they would surely respond 2 as they my imply you are trying to spell the word, and struggle on whether it’s one or two R on the last part.

I know it’s a common thing to ask in french when we struggle to spell our overly complicated language, so it doesn’t shock me

You claim to hate whataboutism, yet every time someone suggests voting for Harris so Trump doesn’t win and thus do irreparable harm to Gaza, to large numbers of vulnerable Americans, to the climate, and to our ability to vote at all, you say “whatabout democrats”. Curious!

Dear Liberals,

Democrats are committing Genocide right now. Trump is not the president. It is not 2016. You can’t blame Trump for Demcrats doing a Nazi Holocaust.

Kind regards.

AVincentInSpace , (edited )

Dear person who refuses to argue in good faith,

First of all, last I checked, Netanyahu was committing genocide, not the Democrats. Second of all, Trump has promised to funnel arms to Israel harder than Biden currently is, and he stands a very real chance of winning the 2024 election.

  1. There are two choices in the United States 2024 election. No third party stands a ghost of a chance of winning. No, not even if the 30,000 people you can reach on Lemmy all vote for Timothy Greenparty.
  2. A Trump victory in 2024 would not only be just as bad if not worse for the citizens of Gaza than Harris would, but also pose an existential threat to a large number of vulnerable Americans (trans people, immigrants, women seeking abortions).
  3. Given the margins of victory in 2016 and 2020, Kamala might not win if leftists don’t vote for her.
  4. Snoozing fascism for four years is better than inviting it through the door now, and buys us time to build our defenses for when it comes back.

I’d like to focus my counterargument. Which of these statements do you disagree with?

EDIT: why am I not surprised that you left a downvote but not a reply?

serendepity ,

I’m sorry but short of a revolution (which is unlikely), or slow, measured positive change over the course of decades (which we’d still have to fight hard for), we’re stuck with a two party system and you shouldn’t blame people for sticking with the lesser of two evils. I do agree that Liberals can be heavy handed with their bans, but I guess they’re doing so to keep the discourse focused. Trump is a very real and immediate threat who might commit far more heinous crime if he becomes the president again.

Linkerbaan OP ,

Policy change comes from people resisting policy with their votes. Abortion is on the agenda because people demanded it with votes. This is no different.

Enough people start demanding it and it will happen. No matter how much politicians want to sell out, they can only do so if you vote for them.

do we even know how complicit biden and harris are for this shit? They’re just the administration, it’s the congress pushing the funding bill, and the bill passed, i feel like we should probably be focusing on the 500-600 odd members of congress that are seemingly fine with this instead of two people who are quite literally just sitting at the top of the chain.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

there’s a lot that biden could have done ages ago. as things looked back when it first became obvious (at least to me,); if Biden had vetoed the aid package, that likely would have signaled a seachange in the dems and made the package not-super-majority proof.

But the first big one, they did lump it in with Ukraine and Taiwan specifically to get that stuff through republicans. Biden could have at any time vetoed the spending bills.

he could also have admited that they’re doing a genocide- or at the very least fucking warcrimes and be like “we need to hold onto that while you sort yourself out.”

The thing that pisses me of the most is that Biden is getting his zionist smeared across Harris- but I think she could actually be persuadable- but not if everyone is being assholes about it. She’s just not presently in a position to set policy. I hope I’m not reading it wrong and that her silence right now is… to not upset whatever the fuck Biden actually is doing. Because. as idioticly pathetically impotent as Biden is proving on this issue… I don’t think he’s just ignoring the genocide altogether. he’s not trump.

KillingTimeItself ,

it would’ve also denied aid to ukraine as well as humanitarian aid to palestine, and if the package hadn’t been cucked by republicans so hard it would’ve also denied the border funding as well, though they blocked that independently themselves.

But the first big one, they did lump it in with Ukraine and Taiwan specifically to get that stuff through republicans. Biden could have at any time vetoed the spending bills.

this is extremely normal with large funding bills like this, it’s just how you get these bipartisan supported bills through.

he could also have admited that they’re doing a genocide- or at the very least fucking warcrimes and be like “we need to hold onto that while you sort yourself out.”

i mean yeah, but the US hasn’t exactly had the cleanest record when it comes to war crimes either. I mean we started numerous wars for shits and giggles.

It’d be nice to see this conflict resolved, but unfortunately i think a really big detriment to that goal currently is a lot of the palestine dialog that is just super aggressive and highly toxic. It also doesn’t help that it seems to be their only issue that they care about. Single issue voting has never once solved a problem. I think a lot of the democratic dialog right now is very front facing, there’s very little focusing on actual policy and specific issues that aren’t extremely marketable. Shit like palestine just isn’t a massive concern for the majority of the population, though i’m sure they would prefer it stopped. I imagine there’s going to be a lot of behind the scenes work to clean this shit up, if they get elected. Democrats tend to be all bite no bark.

Melvin_Ferd ,

So ChatGPT has ADHD

tektite ,

ADHD contains twelve “r’s”

Matriks404 ,

That’s one example when LLMs won’t work without some tuning. What it does is probably looking up information of how many Rs there are, instead of actually analyzing it.

ChairmanMeow ,
@ChairmanMeow@programming.dev avatar

I doubt it’s looking anything up. It’s probably just grabbing the previous messages, reading the word “wrong” and increasing the number. Before these messages I got ChatGPT to count all the way up to ten r’s.

exocortex ,

It cannot “analyze” it. It’s fundamentally not how LLM’s work. The LLM has a finite set of “tokens”: words and word-pieces like “dog”, “house”, but also like “berry” and “straw” or “rasp”. When it reads the input it splits the words into the recognized tokens. It’s like a lookup table. The input becomes “token15, token20043, token1923, token984, token1234, …” and so on. The LLM “thinks” of these tokens as coordinates in a very high dimensional space. But it cannot go back and examine the actual contents (letters) in each token. It has to get the information about the number or “r” from somewhere else. So it has likely ingested some texts where the number of "r"s in strawberry is discussed. But it can never actually “test” it.

A completely new architecture or paradigm is needed to make these LLM’s capable of reading letter by letter and keep some kind of count-memory.

pyre ,

the sheer audacity to call this shit intelligence is making me angrier every day

VirtualOdour ,

That’s because you don’t have a basic understanding of language, if you had been exposed to the word intelligence in scientific literature such as biology textbooks then you’d more easily understand what’s being said.

‘Rich in nutrients?! How can a banana be rich when it doesn’t have a job or generational wealth? Makes me so fucking mad when these scientists lie to us!!!’

The comment looks dumb to you because you understand the word ‘rich’ doesn’t only mean having lots of money, you’re used to it in other contexts - likewise if you’d read about animal intelligence and similar subjects then ‘how can you call it intelligence when it does know basic math’ or ‘how is it intelligent when it doesn’t do this thing literally only humans can do’ would sound silly too.

pyre ,

this is not language mate, it’s pr. if you don’t understand the difference between rich being used to mean plentiful and intelligence being used to mean glorified autocorrect that doesn’t even know what it’s saying that’s a problem with your understanding of language.

also my problem isn’t about doing math. doing math is a skill, it’s not intelligence. if you don’t teach someone about math they’re most likely not going to invent the whole concept from scratch no matter how intelligent they may be. my problem is that it can’t analyze and solve problems. this is not a skill, it’s basic intelligence you find in most animals.

also it doesn’t even deal with meaning, and doesn’t even know what it says means, and doesn’t even know whether it knows something or not, and it’s called a “language model”. the whole thing is a joke.

VirtualOdour ,

Again you’re confused, it’s the same difficulty people have with the word ‘fruit’ because in botany we use it very specifically but colloquially it means a sweet tasting enable bit of a plant regardless of what role it plays in reproduction. Colloquially you’d be correct to say that corn grain is not fruit but scientifically you’d be very wrong. Ever eaten an Almond and said ‘what a tasty fruit?’ probably not unless your a droll biology teacher making a point to your class.

Likewise in biology no one expects a slug or worms or similar to analyze and solve problems but if you look up scientific papers about slug intelligence you’ll find plenty, though a lot will also be about simulating their intelligence using various coding methods because that’s a popular phd thesis recently - computer science and biology merge in such interesting ways.

The term AI is a scientific term used in computer science and derives its terminology from definitions used in the science of biology.

What you’re thinking of is when your mate down the pub says ‘yeah he’s really intelligent, went to Yale and stuff’

They are different languages, the words mean different things and yes that’s confusing when terms normally only used in textbooks and academic papers get used by your mates in the pub but you can probably understand that almonds are fruit, peanuts are legumes but both will likely be found in a bag of mixed nuts - and there probably won’t be a strawberry in with them unless it was mixed by the pedantic biology teacher we met before…

Language is complex, AI is a scientific term not your friend at the bar telling you about his kid that’s getting good grades.

pyre ,

are you AI? you don’t seem to follow the conversation at all

orenishii ,

Definitely sounds like ai yeah

You’re objectively wrong and I’ve clearly demonstrated that so you’re calling me ai? Ok buddy, continue looking stupid then I guess

Yeah you have intelligence in the scientific definition but I certainly wouldn’t use the word colloquially to describe you…

Pretty sure they just buy the imaging from other companies, not fly their own planes. But it seems hard to confirm this. Google Earth refers to “the image provider”, which implies Google didn’t fly the planes themselves, but just bought aerial imagery which is already collected and used in other industries.

You can generally get a feel for if it’s satellite or plane images. You generally aren’t making out a cat on a deck for a satellite photo, it’s more like a blurry house and that’s all you can make out. Satellites are gonna be 100x further away when they take a photo.
