At the beginning of the great migration, they got overwhelmed by troll harras accounts, that used lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works open registration to evade bans. A lot of vile stuff got posted (like photos of murdered drag queens). They decided to defederate from both instances temporarily until they have better mod tools. I don’t think it was necessary but they do that they think is the best for their community. At that point Beehaw had some of the best communities through and many people were angry to get kicked out for something that wasn’t their fault.
Its mostly because they defederated from lemmy.world. Meaning you dont really get to interact with them. You can see their posts and comments, they cant see yours.
Car insurance companies are literally allowed to discriminate by sex and will openly tell you that they do so, why would health insurance be different?
Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits different treatment of insured persons on the basis of their sex in connection with pension funds. This was a supreme court ruling, so kind of linked but not quite.
Interestingly, in UK and EU it became illegal to discriminate by sex for car insurance from about 2012, without very careful use of data - which doesn’t happen. It is allowed to be linked on things like jobs though.
I hate when they pull this shit at drive through fast food. “Would you like to round up to donate to our charity?”
Who knows what the person taking my order thinks about this charity, and what they might do to someone’s food who says no.
Edit: The fact that merely implying a fast food worker wouldn’t be a complete perfect human being gets so many downvotes says a whole lot about this community.
I used to work fast food and retail, both which forced employees to ask customers to donate at the till. We hated doing it. It is awkward for both the customer and the worker. I would get anxiety when donation drive time of year would come round, and I’d feel relief when the customer either just said no or yes, and didn’t yell at me for asking. The cashier REALLY does not care if you donate or not. And the cashier usually does not make your food, it’s usually someone else doing the cooking, and the cooks aren’t paying attention at all to whether you donated or not.
Also, you have to be 18+ for getting a contraception appointment. I guess teens in the US are also having sex like teens in other parts of the world and would very much need access to contraceptives, right?
