As others pointed out, a lot of factors would go into this decision. How many working hours can she normally put in if the average client only pays for an hour? How much time does she have to spend cleaning herself up between? How much risk is there in taking a new client?

Its pretty similar to working freelance compared to a paycheck. If I wanted to go on my own as a freelancer I could probably charge 2-3x my hourly salary rate as a freelancer. But I’d have to hunt for my next meal. I’d have to figure out all my 1099s. I’d have to change stragies to get new clients… Or I can just work my current corpo job making an OK salary but always know I have a paycheck coming and insurance.

Grimy , to games in The Star Fox-style roguelite whose dev refused to use AI voices to cut costs is adding an entire "anti-capitalist revenge" campaign about a cat-girl destroying AI

This is manipulation to sell more copies and nothing more.

In any case, AI voices are empowering to the Indie scene. Fully voiced games used to be exclusive to triple A gaming, indie gevs just simply can’t afford it.

I feel for the voice actors just like I feel for the translators that all had to change domaine ten years ago, but progress is progress and it’s dumb to stifle innovation to save a few jobs.

vithigar ,

This is manipulation to sell more copies and nothing more.

…yes? People who make games do things to make their game appeal to people. Framing that as a negative or unusual is kind of weird. Literally everything any game developer does to make the game entertaining or appealing is “a manipulation to sell more copies”.

chicken ,

I think framing this as “refusing” to use AI is kind of weird. They believe in doing things the traditional way, great, I think games that use all hand-drawn nondigital art are also cool for going against the grain like that, and making a point of supporting artists is laudable, but it isn’t like anyone is trying to force them not to.

FiniteBanjo OP ,

AI Voices are just worse or require more work for less pay, and they actually seem less common in the (well made) indie scene than in the Triple A scene.

People can eat dandelions. So, free food? Where?

themeatbridge ,

You can eat dandelion greens, but be careful where you pick them. Some people use pesticides for spiders and ticks around their homes, or weed-killers. You can also boil the greens and flowers to make tea.

over_clox ,

People that are too lazy or can’t afford to cut their lawn typically also can’t or don’t care to afford pesticides.

Edit: I’ll eat the spiders too.

Eatspancakes84 ,

Not (frequently) mowing your lawn is one of the best things you can do for your local bee population. Dandelions and other meadow flowers are great sources of nutrition for them. Obviously, don’t use pesticides either.

Iheartcheese ,
@Iheartcheese@lemmy.world avatar

So maybe I get a yummy meal, maybe I just fucking die?

I’ll roll those dice.

over_clox ,

I’m not in Australia. The only spiders I know of that might nest under a dandelion are small American jumping spiders.

They’re effectively harmless, and honestly I wouldn’t eat them, as they are our cute 8 legged kittens that eat the other bugs out there.

Look first, if no bugs or spiders, then free dandelion food yo! 👍

Iheartcheese ,
@Iheartcheese@lemmy.world avatar

I might even get a little protein too?

over_clox ,

The spiders are optional. Honestly, you’re more likely to encounter their egg sack under a dandelion than the actual mother spider, unless you pluck them early in the morning dew when momma spider might be at home…

trxxruraxvr ,

Eating the spiders is not an issue. Eating pesticides that people use against spiders is.

over_clox ,

In my area, when people don’t cut their lawns, they damn sure ain’t paying for pesticides.

Transporter_Room_3 ,
@Transporter_Room_3@startrek.website avatar

I don’t use pesticides, but when my dogs start coming inside with ticks, I spray flea and tick killer in their fenced area. I imagine others probably do the same.

over_clox ,

Yeah, people that can afford fences can usually also afford to tend to their lawn. Not everyone can afford such luxuries, many folks can just barely afford dog food, to feed their security guard animal.

over_clox , (edited )

Also, you let your dogs inside? We had a large doghouse and like a 200 foot cable runner.

Edit: Only our cats were allowed inside.

themeatbridge ,

Almost all of our spiders are completely harmless. Even the black widow and brown recluse are not as dangerous as people think.

We spray for bugs because people don’t want house spiders in their house.

pseudo ,

Come discuss at !foragingI’ve eaten dandelion before and I’m still hear to tell the story. I’ve made side dish of the stem. And it taste good. It’s a vegetable without a strong taste.
The leaves are grow and sell as salad even if it is not as common as lettuce. It has much more flavour than to stem.

rayyy ,

Dandelion leaves can be bitter but some people actually cannot taste bitter. One way to reduce the bitter taste is to pick the youngest and fastest growing leaves out of direct sunlight, as sun exposure increases bitterness.

pseudo ,
@pseudo@jlai.lu avatar

Sure but it will still have bitterness and that’s what there is to like about this type of salad

Home gardening is an important element of individual food security.

And food independence

It’s not meant to replace industrial agriculture which maintains food security for the nation as a whole

Hard disagree. Industrial agriculture maintains profits for a few corporations. That large-scale agriculture is productive, necessary, efficient or any of that is a myth. It’s massively inefficient when viewed from the perspective of value - especially nutritional value- to the consumer.

TORFdot0 ,

I don’t have any love lost for mega corporate farms and agree that we need more family and cooperative owned farms that would be more concerned with sustainability and environmental impact.

FiniteBanjo OP ,

Glad to see you agree with me 100%.

'Cost effectives’ when not counting all the costs of monoculturing all the things. Or transport.

Aceticon ,

Most “cost effective” things are only that if you don’t count Negative Externalities.

The obvious example is fossil fuels.

Yeah sure, if everybody else is enduring and/or paying for the bad side effects of the way somebody conducts an economic activity, it’s “cost effective” for those doing that activity that way.

tastysnacks ,

Subsidized cost effectiveness.

FiniteBanjo OP ,

I think the hypothetical here implies transport would still exist for a primarily home-garden non-industrial agriculture replacement system. Or do you think the whole world should suddenly stop trading? Might as well since we’re writing a fantasy fiction, anything goes.

Yeah, its weird, I was kinda tech oriented anyway, but now just by market weight a few stocks with pretty stellar few years of growth hold kinda a lot of concentration risk. Especially funny, bcs eg nVidia isn’t as widely known relatively to how big it has gotten (market cap).
