Why is it that this sounds suspiciously like a “Jews run the media so you can’t criticize Israel” kind of post?

bitsplease ,

Honestly this is a big problem with being able to criticize Isreal in good faith - it’s all too easy to be taken as an antisemite.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure loads of antisemites are out there pretending to be concerned about Gaza while actually just using it as an excuse to hate jews - but the OP is describing very real issues - like the thing with Havard just last week where companies were rescinding job offers based on who supported Gaza and condemned Isreal

seitanic ,

Nope. There are laws. It’s not a conspiracy theory.

HelixDab2 ,

The fact that there are anti-BDS laws doesn’t make this not a conspiracy. Moreover, anti-BDS laws haven’t yet been tested in courts; given that groups like the ACLU oppose them as infringing on legitimate political speech, I think that there’s solid reason to say that they’re unconstitutional. Esp. since BDS is intended to target the country, and not the people.

seitanic ,
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I said “not a conspiracy theory”. Big difference.

HelixDab2 ,

Here’s my issue:

The conspiracy theory behind this is that Jews control everything, and that’s why anti-BDS laws exist. Jewish media overlords don’t like mean things being said about Israel, so they pull the strings on their puppet politicians, and make them dance.

The reality is a couple of things. First, Israel is an ally of the US, and politicians have burned a lot of political capital propping the country up for the last 60-odd years. There’s a bit of a sunk-cost fallacy there; we need to keep supporting Israel, rather than finding new and less-sucky friends in the middle east (like, I dunno, maybe apologizing to Iraq for fucking their whole country over with the shah?, not that they’re great, but we def. made that particular pile of shit). The other one is that evangelical Christians need to support Israel, because they believe that Jesus is going to return as the Messiah in Jerusalem, to the Jews. Anything that can potentially threaten the possibility of Israel controlling Jerusalem would undercut their religious beliefs, so they really want to dump money into Israel. (No, that’s not a bad joke, or conspiracy theory itself; I can probably find links to sermons of guys like Greg Locke saying as much; they don’t like Jews, since Jews are Christ-killers, but they need Jews to usher in the apocalypse. AFAIK, this is pretty mainstream evangelical stuff.) Evangelicals have a lot of power in this country, even if they’re not that large of a population any more. Republicans are largely controlled by them, which is part of the reason that you won’t see any republicans opposing aid to Israel.

Anyway, BDS would threaten the support for Israel; therefore, anti-BDS is generally favored by Dems, and completely supported by Republicans.

seitanic ,
@seitanic@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I agree with most of that, but I think you’re reading a lot into two sentences.

This type of thinking is exactly what the Israeli lobby wants. If you can conflate any criticism of Israel with antisemitism, then you can silence critics and make other people afraid to speak up. (Of course, some criticism of Israel is antisemitic, but it’s dangerous to start from that assumption.)

KFC in particular uses commercial pressure cookers, or at least they originally did I haven’t worked there since before they were called KFC. Things might have changed since the 90s, however I worked at multiple KFCs and the intelligence level of the people they hired to run these things was pretty damn low. In fact, at one store most of the cooks were stoned every single shift. Nobody got seriously hurt.

AngryCommieKender ,

I mean… Getting stoned is arguably better than my experience with fine dining where almost everyone was either stoned and drunk, or on meth… Except for dishie. That dude had EVERYTHING available. He was kinda like Dopey from The 7 Dwarves. Always had an arm out and a leg up to try new drugs. I will admit that dishie was always a reliable source for LSD and X, so there is that going for the madlad.

Many ancient texts (Iliad, Odyssey, Beowulf etc) started as an oral transmission and had a poetic meter to aid in memorisation.

Which is also why they are full of repetition, making them, in my opinion, much more tedious reads for stories that should be more engaging.

Pons_Aelius ,

That's kind of the point.

They weren't created for you and me to read.

They were created to be performed. Reading them out loud helps but audiobooks of them are best.

Same with Shakespeare's plays. Reading them can be a slog for many people.

Watching them performed well is a joy.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I get that, but unfortunately that’s not how it’s usually taken in now. It’s usually ‘read this as part of the syllabus’ in college and it’s a slog, which is just too bad because the actual tales are great and I’m sure they’re wonderful when read aloud by a skilled speaker (never been to a performance).

I understand.

But how do you load the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows 🤓 hehe

I’m in the same boat honestly, I have a lot of stuff on disks still but I just pull out an old optical drive from the box if I need to read them, or an old laptop or tower or whatever that’s got an optical drive.

I do wish booting live USB was a little more universally easy though, it can be a bit of a pain in the arse compared to live CDs, these bloody TPMs and weird bios stuff getting in the way are a real pain. But overall, disks have had their day.

I do still use long term Blu-rays for bulk 10-plus-years cold storage backup though! Wouldn’t trust flash or HDDs for that.

TimeSquirrel , (edited )
@TimeSquirrel@kbin.social avatar

No, the most convenient way is ripping them and turning them into media files that I can copy to anything I want.

Archiving them like this also helps fight against bit rot. They aren't getting any younger (and by the CD/DVD's last days, they weren't exactly made out of the most high quality materials). I'm already experiencing this with floppies and retro computer stuff.

NoStressyJessie ,

This is only my personal experience but…

I’ve never had a package stolen. Even when I lived in a sketchy apartment years ago. If it’s a high value item I either have it delivered to me at my work (this is a privileged position to have, I know) or get it delivered at an Amazon locker a mile or two down the road.

Would it be a pain in my ass if I lived in a high crime area, worked somewhere that didn’t accept my deliveries, and relied on public transport? Absolutely. But I’m guessing that’s not who the majority of Amazon’s customer base is.

_danny ,

It’s one of those opportunity crimes where the easiest victim generally picked. It usually comes down to just two things:

  • How many people see your porch
  • How easy is it to walk up and walk away?

You’d be surprised how much of a deterrent a mild inconvenience is. You’ll get significantly fewer packages that walk off if you live on a big hill, or have a bunch of steps, where it’s mildly inconvenient for someone to walk up.

MrLuemasG ,

I lived in a high crime area and I still didn’t have any packages stolen. I lost more packages to the delivery person delivering it to the wrong apartment versus porch pirates.
