    raltoid , (edited )

The point wasn’t to skip breakfast, it was that a big one isn’t necessary. Have a piece of toast, have a giant breakfast or none at all. It’s usually fine to follow your bodies need if you’re hungry or thirsty. It’s just that some people think it’s important to have a big breakfast, which is a untrue. A small refreshing or nurishing one is much better in many cases.

    qwamqwamqwam ,

Nope, the placebo effect can have physical effects and be genuinely curative. The level to which this is the case is highly variable from patient to patient, but it is inaccurate to say that is limited to improving sensation and perception of illness. Not to mention, in many cases the malady being treated is one of perception, for example, in pain management. And alleviating pain in itself has downstream positive effects on disease progression and patient QOL.

I’m going to trust multiple peer-reviewed medical studies over a youtube talk with under 600 views.

Specially when it’s on a channel branding itself as being skeptical towards science.

EDIT: On a closer look it’s straight up just one of those conspiracy theory channels and organizations that present itself as actual science.

And here’s a study if someone wants to look at actual science regarding the placebo effect:

    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6013051/

    Nalivai ,

I hope you do, because no good peer-reviewed studies ever produced the results you are talking about. I urge you to show me which ones you are talking about.

QED is actually the opposite of a conspiracy theory channel or organisation. They’re very pro science and critical thinking, and spend a lot of time debunking conspiracy theories and pseudo-science.

I’ve got no skin in the debate in this thread, I didn’t watch the actual video and have no opinion on the validity of what you or the other posters are saying, I’m just pointing out that I think that you’re wrong to dismiss the channel as a source, even if you disagree with the claims made in that specific video.

    Drewelite ,

My random conjure if anyone cares:
I see it like many ‘real’ medicines that alleviate symptoms. Sometimes the symptoms are the ones causing the issues, EX. a fever to kill germs can kill braincells. But like any medicine that alleviates symptoms, it can also hide problems. So I see it as a case by case thing.

    Rodeo ,

I think he’s saying that although it’s a treatment, it is not a cure.

It seems to me you are actually agreeing with him.

    fushuan ,

The thing here is that some medicine doesn’t really heal either. Paracetamol is just a pain suppressant, and ibuprofen partially suppresses it while accelerating blood flow and thus reducing inflammation, which is why it’s used for sore throat, to avoid more friction and let the throat heal by itself.

Aleviating pain is sometimes what your body needs to start focusing on healing itself. It’s not a miracle but it works when it does.

Say8ng that placebo effect doesn’t heal you isn’t really that revealing, plenty medicine doesn’t either and that’s okay, that’s not their objective.

    Rodeo ,

You’re right, those thing are treatments, not cures.

It’s nice that we all agree.

GenderNeutralBro , to linux in Why does Nvidia hate linux?

Linux is their bread and butter when it comes to servers and machine learning, but that’s a specialized environment and they don’t really care about general desktop use on arbitrary distros. They care about big businesses with big support contracts. Nobody’s running Wayland on their supercomputer clusters.

I cannot wait until architecture-agnostic ML libraries are dominant and I can kiss CUDA goodbye for good. I swear, 90% of my tech problems over the past 5 years have boiled down to “Nvidia sucks”. I’ve changed distros three times hoping it would make things easier, and it never really does; it just creates exciting new problems to play whack-a-mole with. I currently have Ubuntu LTS working, and I’m hoping I never need to breathe on it again.

That said, there’s honestly some grass-is-greener syndrome going on here, because you know what sucks almost as much as using Nvidia on Linux? Using Nvidia on Windows.

    ProtonBadger ,

Yeah they don't hate Linux, they just have their own priorities. That said I'm running Nvidia+Wayland happily, for desktop they have worked a lot more on Wayland this year, the upcoming driver fixes a bunch of things, and my distrib handled driver installation and updates, I never have to think about it.

    lightstream ,

I cannot wait until architecture-agnostic ML libraries are dominant and I can kiss CUDA goodbye for good

I really hope this happens. After being on Nvidia for over a decade (960 for 5 years and similar midrange cards before that), I finally went AMD at the end of last year. Then of course AI burst onto the scene this year, and I’ve not yet managed to get stable diffusion running to the point it’s made me wonder if I might have made a bad choice.

    adam ,
    @adam@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

It’s possible to run stable diffusion on amd cards, it’s just a bit more tedious and a lot slower. I managed to get it working on my rx 6700 under arch linux just fine. Now that I’m on fedora, it doesn’t really want to work for some reason, but I’m sure that it can be fixed as well, I just didn’t spend enough time on it.

    spark947 ,

It just makes no sense to me though, how is it sustainable for nvidia to not have great Linux kernel support? Like, let the kernel maintainers do their job and reap the benefits. I’m guessing that nvidia sees enterprise support contracts as an essential revenue stream, but eventually even enterprises are going to go with hardware that Linus isn’t giving the finger to right? Am I crazy?

Sometimes it’s weird to look back on middle school, and the teachers who brought our generation up as young kids being told about the future. I’m an adult now, and I feel like an adult now, but in a way it feels like I’m still a part of that group of dumb and naive kids. It doesn’t feel that long ago at all. But the reality is that all of us are now pushing 40, and our time there is now wholly irrelevant, and we’re so far removed from those years that it’s fucking wild. A lot of those teachers are probably dead now.

I don’t know how to articulate what it is I’m meaning to say here. It’s just weird that we were kids so recently. I don’t feel like my life has gone by all that fast, but middle school to 40 somehow did all the same. I feel my age, and I feel as though I’ve lived to my age, but my memories don’t feel distant whatsoever. It feels like that was nine years ago.

Just like I feel like I was still living at home with my dad a few years ago, but I’ve been living in another country away from my parents for 7 years now, and my dad had been dead since last May.

He was such a good dad.

    MoonMelon , (edited )

Condolences for your dad. 42 here, my dad is showing his age majorly now.

Looking back I know I lived every single hour but huge leaps of time are just gone. Like, entire jobs I worked for years I have maybe a half dozen memories. On top of that our work product is gone, the company is gone, the building is gone, the entire industry is changed
it’s like it was all a dream. I definitely understand the old man looking at a city and saying, “this was all orchards”. I used to think it was a wistful phrase, but it’s also an expression of disbelief. When we were embedded it all seemed so important. But it all shuffled off with zero fanfare. It really changes how you experience life, and that’s how I “feel old”.

    macrocarpa ,

I said hi and we talked for a bit, told her “no, not a parent, you were my teacher almost 30 years ago”, and she got a huge smile on her face and was really happy one of her students recognized her and talked with her for a while.

Made the trip worth it, but I am glad she didn’t remember me. Was a shithead kid in junior high, but I think we all kind of were at that age.

    Flummoxed , (edited )

This is the absolute best gift you can give a teacher, to come back and say to us, “You made a difference; I remember you.”

Edit: I do love how even though we’re on opposite sides of this discussion we are both downvoted for speaking Russian. Lol. Lmao even.

    foggy ,

You are the meme here. That’s the point.

The only replicatable piece of culture in this thread is the edgelord leammy.ml user who thinks anyone values their take on socioeconomics.

    imnotfromkaliningrad OP ,

i originally wanted to point out how ironic it is that a .world user wants to talk about site culture, but considering that you arent even capable of writing the word lemmy, its probably pointless.

    foggy ,

You’re doing great, keep it going.

    Sailing7 ,

I fear I gotta move to a different instance. I’m also a lefty but gawd damn I will never try to justify the stuff some dudes on this instance do.

    LainTrain ,

    phoneymouse ,

If you ended up with a file open and don’t know how to get out, there’s a good chance you shouldn’t be changing that file in the first place.

    OpenStars ,

Yes there is definitely that aspect to consider as well:-).
