Searching for a 'library manager' that looks awesome.

As the title says. I have been searching for something like Kodi but more focused on an offline library manager for all the media I have. I can just navigate with the file explorer through my folders but it just looks not that pretty. Is there anything like a library manager to display my videos/music in a similar way of big...

Plex or Jellyfin might be what you’re after.

My PC specs have plateaued as of late, but we’re both in this picture. 😅

I have an alt for my main account. I just link back to my main account from there. I mainly use it when my main instance goes down. Likewise, I link my main account to an older account I had originally that I migrated from (all same username). That way, even if my new/alt looks really new, if someone cared enough, they could follow the trail backward to other older accounts.

I loved Textra. It’s not their fault, but I really love RCS support, and right now that’s basically Google Messages and a handful of preinstalled carrier messenger apps (if I’m not mistaken). I loved adding a 3 second delay on sending texts - I always seem to see typos as/after I hit send. 😂

Lemmy.ml removed the ability to create communities to (I believe) encourage using other instances. You can create a community on other instances still - like lemmy.world, for example.

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

Pretty good. It’s kind of like Stumbleupon for Lemmy communities. The only “issue” I saw is it includes the forbidden no-no instances that are defederated by a lot of the bigger instances for being… troublesome.

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

I honestly don’t know how it should be. I’ll leave that up to you. I wasn’t logged in when I was going through communities. So that might be a way to filter them out easily - if you can pull a list of blocked instances from users’ home instances once they log in.

OverfedRaccoon , (edited )
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

That was quick! Logged in and went through a few skips. Not seeing anything worth noting, which is a good thing. I appreciate that it also pulls from smaller instances I’ve never even heard of.

As an Xbox owner since the OG in the early 2000s, I’d almost suggest against an Xbox One / Series controller too. I know the Xbox One is fairly old now, but it’s the first one I had to get a new controller for due to stick drift. Original controller that came with it has the right stick set to full sky mode, completely unusable. The replacement has right stick drift as well, only slightly to the left at the moment. Manageable, but annoying. I would almost suggest a wired 360 controller (if you can find one these days). I’m an adult gamer, only user, and not hard on controllers, but maybe I’ve just had bad luck with my controllers.

LASIM can copy your current subs to another instance, as others have said. I wish there was a way to migrate posts/comments over. I guess you could just link to your old account in your bio though.

The creator of Pixelfed announced an upcoming encrypted messenger for the fediverse that will work across the fediverse (mastodon.social)

It will be open source, end to end encrypted using Signal’s double ratchet encryption protocol, and he plans to make it easy for fediverse platforms to integrate it. The beta will release later this month....

Yep. That was my first thought - how everyone says to use Matrix rather than Lemmy DMs for anything sensitive. This will be fantastic.

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

It’s taught that way in the US as well.

I mean, you kind of just described two things that are specifically hard to get working properly on Linux in general - MS Office and the Adobe suite. You’re better off using FOSS alternatives, like LibreOffice and Krita or GIMP. Otherwise, you’ll need something like Lutris as a Wine frontend to install Windows apps - and at that point, you might as well just install stock Linux, get qBittorrent going, pirate what you want, and install as needed. Plus, I don’t think I’d trust the security of a modified version of Linux for piracy. That’s just asking to be exploited.

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, this would make sense. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a few “piracy repos” you could add to your package manager. I’ve never thought to look haha.

The bump in Unknown is Windows. If I recall correctly, there was a Windows update (in March, I believe) that caused it to stop registering as Windows with the site. A subsequent update fixed the problem. That’s why, if you look at another chart on the site, you’ll see an equivalent increase in Unknown as Windows decreases during that same time period. Then it reverses after the update.

EDIT: gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/…/worldwide/#m…

OverfedRaccoon , (edited )
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

I edited to include the chart I’m talking about (here). It includes a section for Other as well. I’m not saying it’s the whole picture, but it’s the reason for that bump in Unknown which may be increasing the overall percentage depending on when that data in the OP was pulled.

OverfedRaccoon , (edited )
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

I read in another post a while ago that there was some issue with a Windows update that caused it not to register as Windows. It was then corrected in a subsequent update. So the Unknown bump is just Windows.

With all this talk about sync's pricing...

I think now is a great time to remind everyone, like sync’s developer, Lemmy’s developers need to be paid too! The amount of time all the devs put into making lemmy exist, in my opinion, should be worth some of your money. If you can afford it, donating to the people who develop lemmy and/or the people keeping your home...

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

“Coming Soon” is what pops up at the bottom.

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

Right. I should have clarified. You can’t create a post in a community yet.

OverfedRaccoon , (edited )
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

Sync is great, but I’m not the biggest fan of introducing ads in a service that doesn’t inherently have ads - nothing against the dev getting paid. You also can’t currently create a new post (just says “coming soon”). I used Sync on Reddit for years, so I’m otherwise pretty biased toward it.

Connect is a close second, for me. It’s still a work in progress, but I feel it’s pretty close to Sync. Given time, I think it’ll be there. The dev is also very responsive. Features are pretty community driven as well - so if you want something, post in the community.

But I have to say, for its lack of polish, Jerboa still comes out on top for me. It’s not as smooth scrolling the feed and it needs an option to handle links in-app, but with it being open source and there being a bunch of contributors adding features, every time I think it’s missing something, it’s just a matter of waiting for the next update. The one from today added DMing, which was the big thing I saw other apps handling better. Plus, I think (other than Sync), it’s the only app that handles multiple accounts the best if you want sorting and defaults per account rather than app-wide.

I also still pop into Thunder, Summit, Liftoff, and Voyager periodically to see how they’re coming along. And now, I’m including Infinity (and Boost or any others whenever they’re ready).

At the end of the day, people are just going to have to try the different apps for themselves to see what works for them.

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

Ad removal on Sync is US$19.99. Lifetime Sync Ultra is $99… 👀

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

It happens. I’m glad you said something, because I was coming in with another PSA about trying to discourage this behavior. What’s cute now can easily turn into an unfortunate accident in the future.

I’m not sure I fully understand the question, but maybe using Obtainium and pointing it at the developers’ GitHub? It’ll download directly from the source that way, including updates, etc

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

Slightly off topic. Obtainium sees that there’s an update to 0.0.7, but can’t seem to update 0.0.6. It downloads, tries to update, and boom - update available, with currently installed 0.0.6. Uninstall, reinstall, 0.0.6 again. I guess that’s just an Obtainium issue. A little weird though.

OverfedRaccoon , (edited )
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

Mine won’t seem to update beyond 0.0.6 in Obtainium. It sees the update, downloads, click Update, and bam, still 0.0.6. Even tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Same thing.

EDIT: Dev is aware of the issue.

Install F-Droid from the official site (should be an APK - it’s safe), and, from within F-Droid, you can install Neo Store. Then you can use Neo Store to access F-Droid stuff. Just make sure you stick to official/trusted repos, and you should be fine. I mainly use the Play Store for stuff, but sometimes the updates drop faster on F-Droid (or there’s a handful of FOSS apps that aren’t in the Play Store).

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

No worries! I just started using Obtainium recently, so I wasn’t sure if it was me - but it was the only app doing that after a new update. Glad it was easily and quickly figured out! 😊

It’s a reply to my other comment haha. I edited my comment here like 2 seconds before your reply came through to reflect that. Still good for anyone this far down that missed the reply. 😁

I must have missed that, as I selected No Version Detection and ended up on 0.0.6 again. Thanks for the heads up!

Sorry for your loss. We lost our kitty at the start of the year to an aggressive cancer we thought we’d caught early enough with surgery. My heart goes out to you. ❤️

Blanking on a term. I remember a protocol/firmware for wireless routers where the idea was to connect as many as possible to create a quasi internet without any ISPs. Help?

Basically title. I remember reading about it back in like 2018, I even remember a company that would provide crypto based on the amount of traffic you let through. Just curious if that ever saw any growth....

OverfedRaccoon , (edited )
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

I remember there being a YouTube video of some people that did it in a small town (or neighborhood) and made, essentially, a DIY neighborhood mesh network. I keep looking up stuff, and I’m only finding terms like “relay mesh.” If I find the YouTube video after a reasonable search, I’ll edit.

EDIT: Was the term WISP (Wireless ISP) network? It’s a setting you can do on your router and what the videos I was watching were talking about. The YouTube channel is Freethink, and they cover it being done in Detroit, NYC, and Dylan’s Beach.

She can have my slice. No need to steal it. 🥹

OverfedRaccoon , (edited )
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

Same. I’m not going to judge anyone for scrolling All, but that’s definitely not a level of chaos I’ve ever wanted to deal with.

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

It’s tedious, but I found just looking at lists of communities to be more helpful. If something looks interesting, open it up, check it out, and subscribe. Browsing your subscribed communities is an infinitely better experience. Plus, if you’re willing to take the time blocking communities, I feel like that takes just as much time as scrolling through a list of ones for potential matches for your interests.

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

I was on µTorrent for a long time on a really old build (like 2.2.1) because it got even more bloated and crappy with every new release, especially over 3.0. I realized, aside from missing new features and stuff, it was probably a security risk being that far behind. I made the switch to qBittorrent and never looked back. It basically took everything I liked about that old style build of µTorrent and brought it into modern times.

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

Not saying it was a coordinated attack (per your edit), but anything popular is a prime target for various types of attacks, especially easier stuff like DDoS. But with every attack, the developers and various admins/owners of instances learn something new and how to mitigate it. So while it’s annoying, it’s just as much a blessing as it is a curse - better to patch things quickly than leave an exploitable hole open for who knows how long with access to who knows what.

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

Glad someone asked. I was wondering about that just today and debated asking myself. I’ve been using Fedora for a few years and just installed a new SSD in the laptop. I decided to go ahead and try openSUSE again in light of the situation that I don’t quite understand. 😅

EDIT: Plus all the proposed telemetry stuff with Fedora.

Bitwarden with a free account here, and it does everything I need it to do (and more than I’d expect for free). Between the app on my phone and browser addons/extensions on PC, I honestly don’t know what else I’d personally need from it (or any other password manager). Plus, it’s open source.

OverfedRaccoon ,
@OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

This worked. Thank you! The only extra part is going into YouTube’s App info and toggling Open supported links to off, which you have to do before you’re able to set NewPipe as the default for those links. Then you’re able to follow the directions above and select the 4 verified links that the default YouTube usually uses.

Cautiously assuming it’s a false positive, but LASIM is throwing some warnings from VirusTotal for the Windows EXE as a password stealer (VHO:Trojan-PSW.Win32.Agent.gen). Given the nature of what it does, I can understand it being flagged that way. Nothing when scanned directly with AV. Figured it was worth at least mentioning.

OverfedRaccoon ,

No worries. It just felt irresponsible not to say something.
