Beards are great. Shaving was the greatest crime of Romans.

Yeah that too, if the Carthage was not destroyed it would serve as counterbalance to Romans at least for a time, and the vile shaving custom would not spread as much.

Yeah. Nobody’s ever done real communism on a national scale. As in, not just being a dictatorship in charge of everything that funnels money and power to the top while giving communism lip service and the people get screwed.

azimir , to linux in I'm back on that other OS for work

If I’m stuck on a windows machine, one of the first packages I try to install is git-scm.org’s BASH.

It’s not actually Linux, but it’s got a command line and enough programs to really help get work done.

Tenkard ,

Yes it’s awesome, I use it with Microsoft terminal for tabs + themes, thanks to that I still have to learn how to use powershell

WSL for me.

Tanoh ,

Why not just go full WSL?

azimir ,

I used WSL for a job and it worked fine. It’s kind of a weird VM that doesn’t really integrate with the host OS fully, but it works for many use cases.

Git BASH has more direct system integration and hardware access than WSL, though it’s been a couple of years since I had to look at WSL at all. Hopefully they’ve improved the integration over time.

KingThrillgore , to linux in You think Linux is living a Renaissance with Gaming and New Non-Technical Users?
@KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml avatar

No, I think the success comes from Linux becoming normalized in devices like Android and the Steam Deck. We’ll see how it shakes out.

Bakkoda ,

How easy is it for someone who has no PC gaming experience (they are computer literate) and hence no steam library, to buy a steam deck and it be a comfortable user experience?

KingThrillgore ,
@KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml avatar

I dunno I don’t own one.

Blaiz0r ,

Very straightforward.

BreakDecks ,

If nobody told you it was Linux, you wouldn’t know. If boots straight into Steam. It’s as easy as using a Nintendo Switch.

But you can enter desktop mode to get a Plasma desktop, and you have root access, so if you know what you’re doing it’s a great Linux machine.

SquirtleHermit ,

Its the most simple handheld gaming PC by far. As with all unfamiliar systems, there is a learning curve that exists, and person to person the difficulties in this will vary. But at a base level, out of the box, the SteamDeck is almost as simple to grasp as something like a Switch (or any other console). If you just want to game, and just want it to work, SteamDeck is your best choice.

Full disclosure though, the deeper you choose to dig into advanced use, the more complicated this question becomes. If you are more familiar with Windows, then using the desktop on a Windows handheld will naturally make more sense at first. But if you are comfortable with Linux (or put in the time to learn), the SteamDeck is far easier to use fully handled than it’s competition thanks to easy to remap on the fly controls and the track pads. But again, this second “advanced usage” point is moot if you just want to buy games from Steam and have them work out of the box.

Bakkoda ,

Awesome. I keep recommending them to people asking me if they should buy one even though they don’t game on their PC and i love mine but the last console i owned was a Sega so i didn’t feel like I’m really unbiased at all.

SquirtleHermit ,

Lol, oh, guess I was preaching to the choir.

baseless_discourse ,

I have seen tech illiterate people who are very comfortable with steam deck.

She doesn’t even know macbook charger can charge steam deck. She was complaining to me that she is very afraid of losing her steam deck charger, since she doesn’t have a spare.

So the total positive rate, from my observation, is around 100%, with sample size of 1.

qjkxbmwvz , (edited ) to memes in Americans be like

We tried personally evaluating people for loans on their individual merits, and shocker, there was rampant racism and sexism. Having strict metrics, instead of relying on the whims of a dickwad loan agent, is a good thing.

The new system isn’t perfect, and yeah, it completely favors people who have parents who know how the system works. But at least it’s not explicitly racist or sexist (again, there are of course systemic issues that feed into it).

I get that it’s frustrating to, for example, need to have debt in order to qualify for more debt. But in other contexts this is pretty standard — it’s essentially “financial experience.”

But yeah. It sucks that you should pay expenses with a credit card rather than debit in the USA. Personally it doesn’t matter to me (I pay them off every month), but it sucks for merchants who get stuck with the credit card transaction fees.

ryathal ,

You can live without a credit score, even get a mortgage. It’s not exactly easy, but it’s not that difficult. Once you have a mortgage, you have a good credit score.

ShellMonkey ,
@ShellMonkey@lemmy.socdojo.com avatar

The rise of check cards and normalizing paying for everything on plastic was a big tipping point. There’s even a Monopoly game that uses electronic cards these days. It lets activity tracking run rampant and of course the banks get to skim a fee off everything.

Franky I see it as having nothing to do with fiscal responsibility (can’t overspend the cash on hand) and more just a way to funnel more to those with means than anything. It’s funny how cash advances on cards charge a higher rate than purchases despite neither offering a security interest to the card issuer.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

I am nit a big Matrix fan, so maybe my knowledge about the films (I saw 1 and 2, both only once) might be too limited. But I completely fail to understand the symbology.

undeffeined ,

From what I can remember, the simbolism is stronger in the first movie and not so much on the other two. I recall two key things that can simbolize the struggle trans people go through or are references to transgenderism.

  • Neo feels that there is something wrong with the world and that he does not belong in it
  • The Character Switch was originally supposed to be a man in the real world and a woman when plugged in to the matrix.

I’m sure there’s more but it’s been a while since I came across the analysis.

Worth noting that when I watched the movies I never made an association with transgenderism. I think in great part because I was not even aware of it.

menemen ,
@menemen@lemmy.world avatar

The Character Switch was originally supposed to be a man in the real world and a woman when plugged in to the matrix.

This would have been a clear symbol.

laurelraven ,

A bit subtle, especially if you weren’t familiar with medicines at the time, but the blue pill is supposed to represent an antidepressant (Prozac was apparently blue at that time, don’t know about now, and was commonly prescribed to closeted trans women instead of actually addressing the core issue), and the red pill HRT (one of the common hormone pills at the time was red)

Which makes the “redpill” movement extra hilarious.

As said, though, it was really subtle if you knew that and completely opaque if you didn’t

When I started working in the late 90s early 00s, every company had their own It-department. These days it’s just some consultant or subscription to another company offering their consultants to do specific tasks.

This thread reminds me of why having an IT department makes good sense financially - today.

You can add up all the salaries, equipment and training costs and it’ll still be cheaper than wasting time and money in meetings with consultants trying to either explain the task or moan about pricing.

Shit doesn’t work, because they aren’t paid to make shit work.

I can make code that works for me and I can make code that works for you. The price is different, but you also need to know what you actually want it to do, and I don’t know how much money you are willing to sacrifice for us both fumbling around in that equation.
