Not sure if someone else has brought this up, but this is because these AI models are massively biased towards generating white people so as a lazy “fix” they randomly add race tags to your prompts to get more racially diverse results.
I mean, I don’t think it’s an easy thing to fix. How do you eliminate bias in the training data without eliminating a substantial percentage of your training data. Which would significantly hinder performance.
Exactly. I wish people had a better understanding of what’s going on technically.
It’s not that the model itself has these biases. It’s that the instructions given them are heavy handed in trying to correct for an inversely skewed representation bias.
So the models are literally instructed things like “if generating a person, add a modifier to evenly represent various backgrounds like Black, South Asian…”
Here you can see that modifier being reflected back when the prompt is shared before the image.
It’s like an ethnicity AdLibs the model is being instructed to fill out whenever generating people.
I know it’s a rhetorical question, but briefly. I ate a burrito in Fort Smith, stayed at a crappy motel by Fayetteville one time in the shadow of Jesus billboards, and drove through Little Rock. It was very “natural”.
It was a very average burrito in a sit-down Mexican restaurant, one of those places that has a nice building and atmosphere but seems to cater to a midwestern palate. I think it was La Huerta Grill. Probably would have been better any state to the Southwest of there. Looking at the map now, if I was there again, I’d go to a pupusa place… those are always super good.
To be fair, I bet there is a town named Iran in the US. There’s a Cuba, Bolivia, Lebanon, and others.
Okay, I just looked it up and no, but you can see where I coming from - lots of places named after foreign countries/cities. It probably is stupidity, but with included confusion.
I wonder if it asked them to point out “the country of Iran.”
Of course people also confuse cities and states. Like on the game shows, people will say things like Los Angeles when they mean California, and vice versa.
If it was above 40%, I honestly would be incredibly surprised. That is totally me shooting from the hip, I don’t have anything in front of me to give me that impression.
Western european countries would definitely do better. Every time I see one of those videos of a guy on the street asking people geography the Americans are completely worthless but and random european is almost perfect. Americans can’t even get their states of our own country correct
As a professional editor this is honestly hilarious man. I’m sorry. Surely I don’t need to tell you that just because you see a few Europeans get it right doesn’t mean anything. You have no clue how many people they asked!
Neither of us has any data in front of us. I have already said that I assume Americans are worse. I’m not sure how you can narrow it any further than that.
Just want to say that every time Reddit does something shitty like this, Lemmy will get a boost. And with Lemmy constantly getting better (both community and platform), I’m willing to bet these boosts come with smaller user drop offs every time.
At this point (and with Sync, as I used for reddit), Lemmy is indistinguishable from my reddit browsing experience. Except on Lemmy I don’t encounter constant hostility.
There are a couple of communities I miss, like r/fountainpens and r/suzukisamurai. Im sure I could figure out how to create those communities, im not sure I’d be a good mod.
That and the impact. The amount of communism or total and complete anti capitalism without nuance or depth, right or wrong. Reddit was very left, but not like here!
Tankies aren’t communists anyway. They’re Russian trolls, CCP shills. Those are fascist dystopias. Just mention Ukraine being invaded and they go ballistic.
The quality of posts and comments overall isn’t where Reddit was. That comes with volume, though.
Also, I haven’t found a single niche community that does what Reddit did. For instance, if I’m into a specific show, Reddit was my go to place for discussions about a new episode. Lemmy does not have that for any show I watch.
Niche comes with volume too. And really, niche is what’s important, not the broad strokes (I’d argue the boons of Lemmy are broad strokes at least). Reddit is worse for a lot of reasons, but man oh man, how can you convince someone to come over when the value is in the volume? I’m still primarily on Reddit, actively contributing to the problem.
I’ve been lucky so far, but ever since leaving reddit I’ve been in an infinitely better mood. Sometimes reddit would bring out the worst in me as well, and I’d be short with people or needlessly confrontational. You could tell when I was in a shitty place mentally because my post history would shift from light-hearted and sentimental to easily annoyed with frequent cursing. Reddit’s algorithm really fine-tuned its way under my skin, and I found myself increasingly angry as the years went on. US political issues really got me going. I was never more irritable and mad at the world than I was over the past few years on reddit. Now all of that is just gone, and my Lemmy usage is about 20 minutes per day. I’m in a much better place.
but also, with every influx it waters down the spirit of lemmy a tiny bit in exchange for more activity / content / perspectives. which generally is worth it so far, but even still i can already see some discussions on here getting worse, with shittier viewpoints i wish were quarantined in facebook
You can no longer op-out for targeted advertising based on use habits (like if you visited canned sardines you could get ads about sardines on the canned sardines subreddit but not on cheatatmathhomework, now you could get ads about canned sardines in the math subreddit and about brilliant on the sardines one)
No it it also has the effect tof the people who dropped off probably won’t come back. Yah I tired it and it sucked. Lemmy blew it’s big chance. Yes it has grown but could have been bigger.
I don’t think it works that way. A free service like Lemmy can be tried multiple times. People aren’t just going to ignore something forever cause they tried it once and it sucked. People understand that software evolves over time.
Jet Assisted Takeoff - The gif is Fat Albert which is part of the Blue Angels. There was a plan to use jet-assisted landing and takeoff to rescue hostages in Iran but it wasn’t used after a failed test of the landing jets.
C130s were designed to operate from relatively short unimproved runways. If the place has enough runway to operate corporate jets, it should have enough for a C130.
EDIT: This place only has enough runway (2998 x 50 ft ) for small Cessna size aircraft, so no jets or C130s.
I’ve lived under a flight path, ~9km/6miles from the airport - while I understand the difference between a 787 and a Cessna 172, I’ve got no earthly idea why anyone would choose to have a runway in their front yard.
I lived adjacent to a neighborhood like this. It was much quieter than middle aged neighbors with Harley’s. Little Cessnas and Pipers are not that loud.
I live basically across the street from an Air Force base so I get turboprops over the house at 1,000 feet starting at about 7:00 5-6 days a week. Doesn’t bother me or my wife, we just like planes.
It’s a training base so we’ve got both here. I’m just on the prop side. Cargo planes are super fun too, used to fly C-17s over my old house all the time before we moved here.
Yeah, I’m not going to “be kind” to divisive bullshit, I’m going to call it out. Every time. Someone’s pissing on your shoes and you’re telling the person telling them not to to “be kind”. 🤡
Oh wow good to see you here! I remember you from the early days when we had less than 6k subs there!
It used to be such a fun, vibrant and exciting hobby and community. It so sad to see how regulations basically strangled the life out of it. It’s very nice to see familiar usernames pop up here and there!
To any three-letter agencies who might be reading this post, I was uploading Linux ISOs and scientific research papers. I would never dream of uploading copyrighted material…
I'm Detective John Madden with the NFL, you're under investigation.
Steam VR works fine, but you need a headset that supports Steam VR without needing other software. The main options are the HTC Vive and the Valve Index.
Good point! I was aware of ALVR, specifically that it supported the Quest, but I wasn’t sure how stable it was. I didn’t know it supported those other headsets, that’s cool!
Still… There are anticheats that allow Linux, like EAC, Hyperion and many others… If they choose one that does not allow Linux, or choose one that allow Linux but block it, it’s a dev issue
Virtually no anticheat worked on Linux just a few years ago except maybe Valve and Blizzard in-house solutions. Games that are out and already committed to a specific anticheat can’t do much but to wait, so it is not really on them. Changing the anticheat solution mid-way on a released game would piss off so many people you can’t imagine. On a brand new game though, I would agree that this should be considered.
Indeed. What sucks is that it is off by default, I figure most small-time devs simply need to be told it exists. I definitely wouldn’t excuse the big players though, most AAA game companies can get fucked for all I care.
I get your point, and while there is certainly a subset of people who are suffering through no fault of their own, there are plenty of people who are lazy and/or made terrible decisions. Lumping them all together like you are doesn’t help the situation. Those who want help should absolutely be helped. Those who don’t should not be allowed to ruin it for the rest of us.
You’re going to get downvoted into oblivion for speaking the truth. Lemmy is full or libritards who are just as bad as the far right nutjobs. Both don’t live in reality.
We all have our limits. Some people seem to be tougher than others. There are things people go through that I would last maybe two weeks before killing myself. When analyzing these situations it’s hard to balance compassion and being reasonably critical.
I’d guess absolutely every person in a shit situation wants help. No one WANTS to be homeless, destitute, and addicted. The problem is, that for a lot of the worst off people in the world, that’s pretty much all they have. Sometimes, the only source of any light in someone’s life is a chemically induced high. Who am I to tell someone in that situation that they can’t do one of the few things that makes life kind of ok?
This kind of thing is a failing of society, not the person, no matter how deep you drill. Each and every one of the people in this shit needs help, not judgement, not to get clean, not to make money. Start with providing actual help, a home, food, mental and physical healthcare. It doesn’t have to be luxurious, just safe. The rest will follow naturally.
There are also those who make bad decisions and are lazy but have a lot of money and power regardless. Being lazy/making terrible decisions does not equal poor; same as being hard working/making good decisions.
The system at this stage is just geared towards making the poor poorer and the rich richer. E.g. making people pay lots of money to stay healthy rather than give people equal opportunity, making good education only accessible to the rich by making it prohibitively expensive, the wage divide between an employee and a CEO, family trusts and associated taxes etc.
The simple fact of the matter is that most things most people do are simply input -> biology happens -> output. Breaking that hardwired process that happens in the background for every miniscule decision you make is the basis of like, every kind of therapy, self-help, meditation routine, etc.
Literally people born with or contracting disabilities that leave them permanently destitute due to you not being able to eat or house yourself without work you can’t do because your disabled.
They’re being satirical. They’re saying it’s virtually impossible to not succumb to poverty if you have disabilities, trauma, or racial prejudice working against you.
I’d file that under trauma. If there was no trauma caused by extreme poverty like; parent was a sexworker; watching a parent lose it all; emotional neglect; physical neglect; history of incarceration; generational drug abuse, it would be more unlikely they would succumb to homelessness. That said, you are right.
Generational poverty is also historically about racism. Now, that’s changing but it’s changing more because it’s just getting harder to get out of poverty than it is because there’s less racism…
My freaking God. I volunteered at a local charity org a bit this summer and one of the first things they told us in orientation was that “most people think that poverty is about what people lack. But it’s actually a mindset.” That pissed me the heck off not gonna lie.
Even that is too hard for most people, you need to be able to download an app from the appstore and register in under 2 minutes, then lemmy needs to provide enough interesting content easily for the average person to stay.
Lemmy doesn’t aim to captivate and take over your attention like most social media does. If that’s what people want, they should stick to their other platforms.
