SoonaPaana , to linux in Ask Lemmy: Traditional vs natural mouse scrolling; which do you use?

I never remember which one is natural and which one is reverse. When I use a mouse or a trackpad, I am moving the scroll bar. When I am using a touch screen, I am moving the content.

thayer OP ,

That makes sense and is probably the best no-nonsense rationale I’ve seen yet.

Jumuta ,

my idea is that when I scroll on the mouse, the bottom part of the scroll wheel touches the content

Lantern ,

This makes sense to me too. The way I have always viewed it is that if you were to lay the mouse wheel on the screen itself, it would behave the way as if it were interacting physically.

spaghettiwestern , to technology in I hate how everything requires you to download a shitty proprietary data harvesting app nowadays when everything can be done just fine without an app.

The number of business that just expect that everyone has already downloaded and installed their app has become ridiculous.

Best Buy now demands an app be installed for order pick up. They are so sure you’ll have already done that there are no instructions in their parking lot for pick up that don’t include the app, no way to call them, and the lot employees say, “Just use the app and we’ll get your order.” It’s like the 20% tips programmed into just about every payment machine these days. No, I won’t leave you a 20% tip for handing me a receipt.

Even when going to Best Buy’s service desk the reps looked at me like I was crazy. “No, I won’t install your app to pick up an order” was met with confusion and open irritation. Fuck that.

That’s always the case in the beginning with those apps. And once they have market dominance and/or the shareholders want their ROI, they increase price and hope people still use it. See Uber for example.

AceFuzzLord ,

This is why I hope to god when I’m living in my own we never get to the point where apps become 100% required to purchase shit from a store. I’d rather starve and miss a day’s worth of meals than order off an app.

Policies and practices are often very different things.

Gestrid ,

Weird. I can just go to the mobile Best Buy site, pull up my order from my account, and get the barcode they need to scan from there. No need for the app.

I can do the same with the desktop site.

spaghettiwestern ,

IMO people should not have to know a company’s policies and go through their website to make a purchase. Anyway, it would have been nice if they put that information on the sign in their pickup area, or their pickup reps or desk clerks mentioned it when I told them I didn’t have the app. Instead they made it clear that everyone should either already have the app or install it because they said so.

Way, way too many companies and organizations (like the OP’s) are pulling this kind of crap.

But yeah she was spewing up some nonsense most likely. Although she claims she got the lore from the local native tribe and to be fair, she (and we) were tight with a lot of tribal members. Her good friend, who may have been the source of the “legend”, is currently an elder of the tribe.

Look, I’m not saying it’s true I’m just answering the prompt 🤣.

    Which tribe?
It's gross and racist to make stuff up about native americans to add to your woowoo wicca stories.

Wicca was started as a sex cult by Gerald Gardener a 100 years ago, and it was based almost entierly off a book of complete pulled-from-her-arse bullshit about witch cults in western europe by Margaret Murray.

Do you know what happens when you put lemons in salt? The juices get sucked out and you get preserved lemons. Lemons contain 20% more water than humans but the result would be the same.

If you know wicca is stupid bullshit, stop sharing bad creepypasta about it.

    weariedfae ,

Sorry to disappoint but things are a lot less mysterious than you may be thinking, lol. A comment below called it. United States, new-age/pagan and Gardnerian Wicca. I was raised in it but no longer believe.

Lol, no one is buried in salt for real. Salt is used for what they call “grounding”, and warding/protection, and cleansing (it’s versatile) which is what she was referring to.

I mean…I can’t say no one has ever gotten into a bathtub and filled it with salt but um…that’s not really what she was talking about. Or is it? Who knows.

I’d say Google it for more info but also I am absolutely afraid of what nonsense may come up and make the situation look more ridiculous than what actually was happening.

What she was saying was the equivalent of a superstitions person doing something to ward off the “evil eye” n whatnot. Think a long the lines of spitting on the ground after saying a bad thing, throwing salt over your shoulder, knock on wood, etc.

    DharmaCurious ,
    @DharmaCurious@startrek.website avatar

You were raised in it? I’d love to hear about that. I dabbled in Wicca years ago, as I have in most pagan traditions commonly found in the US. I like learning about religion, but I’ve never met anyone who was raised in it, only converts.

    weariedfae ,

Well, hm, I say “raised” for simplicity. I converted at age 6 or 7 (initiated by me, not converted by another person or family member). Before then, I wasn’t raised with any specific beliefs and when I made a friend who was actually raised wiccan from birth I started hanging out with them and just kind of fell into their religion because it made sense to me. Even at that age I was into new-agey stuff on my own. Before converting, when I prayed (because TV told me to every night), I prayed to “all the gods and goddesses” because I (a kindergartner) didnt want anyone to feel left out. So I wasn’t very traditional in the first place and can you even say a 7 year old converted? It’s more like I discovered the concept of a belief system and Wicca was what I gravitated to, at the time.

Other family members dabbled in the belief but I was the only True Believer until, ironically, my official joining of the religion/coming of age/rite of passage ceremony (think first communion or bar/bat mitzvah but more low key and cheesier because it was made up by a bunch of hippies with no real ties “to the ancients”). I was preparing for the ceremony by doing some ritual self reflecting (meditation stuff) and began to leave my faith.

While I do have some ghosts of pagan beliefs left it’s more like superstitions than a religion or belief system.

Like if I’m in trouble, genuinely afraid lost-in-the-woods trouble, I immediately start praying this specific wiccan song. Because my earliest spirituality wasn’t crafted by the Abrahamic religions so my go-to operating system is pagan.

I can’t think of any real difference between someone who was born in it, converted as a child, or converted later in life except for the fact that I never had Catholic guilt or other Christian or other Abrahamic religious values instilled in me. I was exposed to them a lot because of Western culture (also, Bible camp = free daycare in the summer) but nothing really appealed to me or stuck, especially since I had major issues with the way the Abrahamic religions treated women even as a very young child.

bradorsomething , to asklemmy in What are some commonly known facts that are too bizarre for you to believe to be true?

Let’s stick with the iron in your hemoglobin for some more weirdness. The body knows iron is hard to uptake, so when you bleed a lot under your skin and get a bruise, the body re-uptakes everything it can. Those color changes as the bruise goes away is part of the synthesis of compounds to get the good stuff back into the body, and send the rest away as waste.

In the other direction, coronaviruses can denature the iron from your hemoglobin. So some covid patients end up with terrible oxygen levels because the virus is dumping iron product in the blood, no longer able to take in oxygen. I am a paramedic and didn’t believe this second one either, but on researching it explained to me why these patients were having so much trouble breathing on low concentration oxygen… the oxygen was there, but the transport system had lost the ability to carry it.

    cubedsteaks ,

The body knows iron is hard to uptake

I had to take iron supplements in the past because my periods were so bad that I would lose my vision and pass out from loss of blood.

    ColeSloth ,

I don’t have iron issues so I haven’t completely fact checked this, but I have read in various places that using cast iron skillets to cook with does add more iron to your foods to help supplement.

    cubedsteaks ,

That is super interesting information and kind of makes sense with the seasoning involved.

But I recently learned you can get different enamel types that you don’t have to season.

    boatswain ,

I would think an enameled skillet would not provide any extra iron; the glass that the enamel is made of forms a barrier between the iron and everything else. That’s nice because you don’t have to worry about it rusting any more, but it also means no iron in your food.

    cubedsteaks ,

Yeah, its like a trade off. I’m uneasy about having to season a pan for some reason. I’m pretty sure I have OCD and if I can’t clean a dish the way I clean my other dishes it bugs me to some extent.

    ColeSloth ,

You’ll just develop a new ocd about how sexy you can make your cast iron look. They’re the only dishes related thing I enjoy cleaning up.

    cubedsteaks ,

lmao that’s definitely not how OCD works.

    boatswain ,

Ah gotcha, I can understand how that might be a thing; cat iron is definitely something you treat differently than other dishes. There’s a whole fascinating level of nerdery to proper seasoning, but it’s definitely special cookware that doesn’t fit the usual patterns.

    cubedsteaks ,

yeah, for some reason it gets to me that there is something left on the pan on purpose. My brain just wants me to scrub it all off.

    boatswain ,

What about if you think off it like Teflon on a nonstick pan?

    cubedsteaks ,

I use a ceramic pan mostly and try to stay away from nonstick and teflon because that can scratch over time and get into food.

I also have an issue with rinsing out dishes. I’m worried there is still going to be soap so I just rinse things over and over.

    boatswain ,

Yeah, I stay away from the nonstick stuff as well, for the same reason. Just thought that thinking of seasoning as a nonstick coating target than as something to be cleaned off might be helpful, though I totally get it if not.

    literallydogshit ,

There are also iron “fish”, or fish shaped blocks of iron, that can be used while cooking which do the same thing!

Steve , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in What Does Fabric Conditioner Do? And Should I Use It?

It’s an acid that chemically breaks down the fibers in the cloths, this makes them softer. Some like the feel of it. However, it also weakens the fabric, causing the clothes ware out faster.

If you like the extra soft clothes, and don’t mind replacing them often, it’s fine.
If your clothes are rather expensive, and you want to keep them as long as possible, it’d be better avoid Fabric Softener/Conditioner. In fact use cold water, and Woolite Dark detergent (or whatever local equivalent you have) for maximum longevity of your cloths, color white or other.

I got that advice from a metal music fan site, offering care instructions for collectable tour shirts that you want to ensure remain a black as your soul. They actually suggested using water form a Nordic iceberg, since that’s where all the blackest metal comes from anyway. It was very funny. I’ll try to see if it’s still online.

Edit: I miss remembered much of it, like the Nordic Ice. And the original appears to be gone. But someone else has clipped the important bit.

… for you, the truly elite metalheads, I am here to bestow the darkest secrets of Laundromancy upon thee. I have consulted tomes of ancient wisdom (i.e., I asked my mom) in preparing this guide. May it serve you well… in darkness:

    1. WOOLITE IST KRIEG. Your precious metal shirts are meant to be handwashed, so as to preserve the ink prints and the integrity of the fabric. Woolite is expensive, but it is an investment in your metal cred. In recent years, WOOLITE DARK has been introduced, formulated for dark clothes exclusively. USE IT! Immortal would endorse no less.
    2. COLD WASH ONLY. Allow your clothes to soak in waters as cold as the rivers of Blashyrkh itself, without agitation. HAND WASH, or use the “hand washables” cycle on your washing machine. Your precious metal shirts get enough violent agitation when you’re wearing them in the mosh pit.
    3. NEVER USE FABRIC SOFTENER ON METAL SHIRTS. “Softener” on a metal shirt? Are you kidding? Does the Snuggle bear really look like he knows the difference between Iron Maiden and Iron Angel? Not only should true metalheads welcome and relish Unsoftness, but fabric softener works by expanding the fibers of the fabric, thereby subjecting your battle armor to undue wear and tear. There’s time for that later.
    4. AIR DRY ONLY. Dryers are false metal. The cold north winds will serve you well. But keep them out of the sun’s rays! The sun, as always, is the enemy of darkness.
    DrMango ,

    To add on to this:

General advice for clothing longevity is to always wash cold and hang dry. Taking it a step further though you can make sure all of your zippers are closed prior to going into the laundry so they don’t catch or scratch your other garments in the jumble. Extra sensitive clothings like athletic wear, lace, and other delicate fabrics can be placed into mesh bags for added protection (just search for “mesh laundry bag” at your preferred home goods retailer to find some). You can also wash garments inside out to mitigate wear on the outside surface or designs.

I second the woolite dark recommendation, and add that you really don’t need to use much in each load. Modern detergents and washing machines are pretty powerful, so less is more in this case.

If you don’t like how your clothing is a little crunchy after hang-drying you can toss it in the dryer on the tumble setting (or whatever the NO HEAT setting is called on yours) for 10-20 minutes and the garment will soften right up. This is generally more of a concern with natural fibers (cotton, wool, etc.) than synthetic (polyester, lycra, etc.).

If you don’t have time for all that drying, use the lowest possible heat setting on your dryer, and pull the clothes just before they are totally dry if you can. They don’t need to be damp, but even just letting them finish out the last 10% of drying in room temp can be beneficial as dryers tend to over dry clothes which can also be harmful to the garment over time due to applying heat to a dry garment much longer than needed. Depending on your dryer the “delicates” setting may also help to mitigate some of this.

    scarabic ,

This is good to know. I might get a small bottle of fabric softener just for items that I’d actually like to break down a little bit. Like new towels that aren’t as absorbent as old towels. Or brand new jeans that are too stiff.

    Blastasaurus ,

Great advise. I have always been into fashion and spend prefer to have excitement clothes albeit a lesser quantity. I’ve always washed cold and hang dried. It takes more effort, but I have some tshirts that have lasted 20 years.

I got that advice from a metal music fan site, offering care instructions for collectable tour shirts that you want to ensure remain a black as your soul.

    Ok retard

    ChunkMcHorkle ,

The crime happened in the past when the children were abused.

That’s true. You could look at it that way and stop right there and remain absolutely correct. Or, you could also look at it from the eventual viewpoint of that victim as a human being: as long as that picture exists, they are being victimized by every new use of it, even if the act itself was done decades ago.

Not trying to pile on, but anyone who has suffered that kind of violation as a child suffers for life to some extent. There are many who kill themselves, and even more that cannot escape addiction because the addiction is the only safe mental haven they have where life itself is bearable. Even more have PTSD and other mental difficulties that are beyond understanding for those who have not had their childhood development shattered by that, or worse, had that kind of abuse be a regular occurrence for them growing up.

So to me, adding a visual record of that original violating act to the public domain that anyone can find and use for sick pleasure is an extension of the original violation and not very different from it, IMO.

The visual records are kind of a sick gift that never stop giving, and worse still if the victim knows the pics or videos are out there somewhere.

I am well aware not everyone sees it this way, but an extra bit of understanding for the victims would not go amiss. Imagine being an adult and browsing the web, thinking it’s all in the past and maybe you’re safe now, and stumbling across a picture of yourself being raped at the age of five, or whatever, or worse still, having friends or family or spouse or children stumble across it.

So speaking only for myself, I think CSAM is a moral crime whenever it is accessed, one of the most hellish that can be committed against another human being, regardless of the specificities of the law.

I don’t have a problem with much else that people share, but goddamn I do have a problem with that.
