DrMango , (edited ) to asklemmy in What is your "inexpensive" hobby that turned out to be expensive/ you gradually invested lots of money into?

Running.

Was supposed to be the cheapest way to get exercise. You can do it right from your front door, no gym subscriptions, no specialized equipment (some people will tell you you don’t even need shoes), and it’s far and away the best time-value exercise I’ve ever found. You can get away with like 20 minutes 3-4 times a week and be doing great.

Well, turns out I love running and I love distance running so I’m now putting up enough miles to need new shoes 2-3 times a year, a nice Garmin smart watch and heart rate monitor to track my progress, sign-ups for several long-distance races each year, shorts, socks, you get the picture.

Could I do it cheaper? Yeah. But at the end of the day it’s a hobby and I like it

criticon ,

The races are so expensive! I can’t justify signing into one yet, I’m ready to run a half marathon but I’ll wait until I can run a nice full marathon since it’s almost the same price

DrMango ,

They can be wildly expensive, and some truly aren’t worth it. I almost always opt to donate the shirt I get because frankly I’m a little picky about my gear and they’re rarely good quality, but even beyond that I’ve run a few where the race coordinators just haven’t got a clue how to host a race and I really start to question why I even paid to register at all.

Fortunately I’ve found an amazing local company that hosts trail runs and is managed by a former ultramarathoner and they’re the best races I’ve been a part of. I also feel good about paying a local small business.

Good luck making it to your first marathon 😀

I’m just getting into cycling and I’m super lucky to have gotten my dad’s old tri bike for free. He had it all kitted out and it’s pretty well perfect for me. It was in pristine shape until I wrecked it a couple times. One of them requiring 24 stitches.

So I guess that’s the most expensive hobby I’ve had - not in terms of financial cost, but definitely in terms of blood drawn!

Protip if you’re not used to race bikes: they can be a lot twitchier than you might be used to!

GBU_28 ,

I fucking love trail running gear and I’m not afraid to admit it

DrMango ,

Oh yeah, forgot about that one. You thought you just needed one pair of shoes? Well, no I need a different pair for trail running and road running. And it gets cold here and I like to run in the winter so that’s a whole other set of clothing I gotta have. And let’s don’t even get started talking about how the grocery bill gets hiked up during the training cycle…

Still cheaper than my cycling hobby!

geekworking ,

I was running for a couple of years , and my knee started to give me problems.

I went to an orthopedic Dr, and his advice was to take up swimming and if I wanted to keep running that I should hold on to his business card because someone needed to pay for his kids’ college.

I stopped running soon after and avoided surgery for a decade, but it still caught up with me. Knees are definitely cheap with for-profit healthcare.

qooqie ,

This is why shoes these days are super engineered cushions essentially. Don’t skimp on shoes if you’re young and reading this, buy the good shit because it’s good (and usually it’s more expensive). $200 now saves thousands in replacements and tons of pain along the way.

vlad76 ,
@vlad76@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I disagree that all of Lemmy needs to pick a direction. That’s the nice thing about instances. You can spin up your own and do what you want on there.

I think a lot of this would be resolved by more features. Instance blocking on user side should be a thing, for example. I think some app does it, but it’s not a feature of the whole platform. Also, if there was a way to automatically link multiple communities of the same topic from different instances, I think it would cut down on a lot of the repetitive content we see on All. But that would have to be a feature you can toggle, otherwise I can imagine it breaking horribly.

That’s just inexcusable.

I think some people are just wired to think in a way that makes the ways computers work difficult to understand. (Just like some folks don’t have an inner monologue or can only think in images, or can’t visualize anything at all). I’ve been the liaison between tech folks and non-tech folks in the same conversation with me needing to translate between both parties. They could not understand each other even in the same conversation.

I can’t find files because they’re buried in subfolders or split into separate drives because IT decides to change the structure of everything and who knows where where to find what if there’s not a shortcut to what I need on my desktop. Did they put it on X drive or G drive or H drive? What folders did it get buried in?

…That’s a salt, though, right?

If you’re counting non-NaCl salts as answers, then basically any “mineral” our body needs would probably be delivered at least partly in salt form. Just reading off some multivitamins here:

  • Calcium Carbonate
  • Chromium Chloride
  • Cupric Sulfate
  • Potassium Iodide
  • Ferrous Fumarate
  • Magnesium Oxide
  • Manganese Sulfate
  • Sodium Molybdate
  • Sodium Selenate
  • Zinc Oxide

(I haven’t fully checked all of these are salts— But I mean, a lot of of them are blatantly chemical analogues of stuff that definitely is salt (E.G. “Potassium Iodide” vs. “Sodium Chloride”), plus they’re metals bonded to ionic groups so they’re definitely not alloys or covalent molecules or ceramics.)

This is probably because in order for our body to absorb stuff, it basically has be water-soluble, which means salts work quite well.

When eating real food (plants, animals, and fungi), I assume a lot of this won’t be in salt form, but rather it will mostly be bound up in proteins and DNA and such. For example, iron should be primarily in hemoglobin instead of ferrous fumarate. But some of it, for example the potassium, will definitely be technically in the form of dissolved salts/minerals in the fluids inside the food.

You can of course also rearrange the compounds around. For example, this can of Windsor-brand “salt free salt substitute” I have here further lists:

  • Potassium Chloride
  • Calcium Silicate
  • Magnesium Carbonate

You’ll note that these are some of the same components as in the list above, just a different combination. I’m pretty sure any ionic mineral that includes at least one ion that our body needs technically counts as “food”, as long as the other half isn’t poisonous— They should be basically the same when they dissolve in the water in our stomachs anyway.

Meats can also be preserved by adding nitrates and nitrites to it, though technically I guess that’s more of a likely-carcinogenic additive than part of the “food”.

Fun fact: Your body sorta knows when it’s low on minerals, and will want to start eating dirt and rocks in order to make up for it! Over 100 different types of primate do it too. So in that case, you could probably argue that plain rocks and soil literally are food, in that they provide vital nutrients the body needs and that your brain is smart enough to know that. …These days it’s apparently considered a mental disorder, but I swear it made much more sense back when the likeliest thing you were going to eat was some mud, rather than lead-contaminated radioactive refrigerants or whatever it is we’ve surrounded ourselves with.

Enjoy, also, this lovely video from a chemistry Youtuber and his friends taste-testing which alkaline-chloride salt tastes the best!

@Da_Boom@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Can confirm, did a mandatory highschool weeks work experience in kmart a few years back - was the only person who cared to clean up the shoes.

Nowadays the shoe section is clean af. However I dont necessarily think it’s due to the workers - more likely less customers shopping for shoes offline.

I don’t generally buy shoes from those stores anyway anymore, I have very small feet so the selection sucks, but also none of the shoes last very long. Id rather spend $100 on shoes that last rather then $25-35 on shoes that fall to pieces after a month or two of use.

But when I do shop for shoes in these stores, I make a point to put the rejects back where they are supposed to go. That one week burned into my brain how painful it is to put away a mountain of shoes that people just tossed aside. So I’ll do my part to not be apart of the problem, and to make it easier for our poor retail workers.

Here’s an intuitive reason, have you ever used a wheelbarrow? You’ll notice that picking up a wheel barrow to push it is extremely nimble to spin it up around the wheel and dumping the contents precisely. Turn around and try instead to pull on it, and suddenly you can’t make as sharp turns and maneuvers unless you uncomfortably shimmy your feet around. One fixed point of swivel with a long lever behaves differently being pushed than when being pulled. A car has a similar effect in place, driving backwards a car is more precise and maneuverable than going forward. Because the rear wheels act as pivot points and the front wheels have a long arm of leverage to more accurately direct the car, with tighter turn radius than when going forward. This is why experienced drivers agree that reversing into a parking spot is easier than pulling into it.

When you back in, you already have right of way. Traffic has to wait for you to park and you aren’t reversing into cross traffic.

If you park forward, when you go to leave you have to worry about cross traffic and your head/eyes are far removed from where you need to be looking. You don’t have right of way which means a lot of awkward mashing the brakes when a car or pedestrian pops out of your blind spot.

In short, you can park faster and more accurately and you can leave faster and safer.

The only reason to park forward is there’s a line of cars behind you that won’t let you reverse into a spot. Otherwise, it’s always the right choice.

CptInsane0 , to asklemmy in How many of you are using ChatGpt to help you with your work, and not telling your boss/co-workers?

I don’t have any bosses, but as a consultant, I use it a lot. Still gotta charge for the years of experience it takes to understand the output and tweak things, not the hours it takes to do the work.

    Thaolin ,

Basically this. Knowing the right questions and context to get an output and then translating that into actionable code in a production environment is what I’m being paid to do. Whether copilot or GPT helps reach a conclusion or not doesn’t matter. I’m paid for results.

    @TheWeirdestCunt@lemmy.world avatar

I told my boss that I was going to have to reduce my hours back to weekends only because college was starting back up again which meant I couldn’t do week day shifts, so they put me down for two mid week shifts and didn’t tell me about them, then they used that as an excuse to fire me.

I’m not a lawyer, but that sounds like classic “constructive dismissal”, which qualifies for unemployment in most states. Of course, you’d have to fight for it, which as a college student, would’ve probably been too expensive and time-consuming. Sorry about the shit boss.

(Replying from alt instance cause main one is down)

I’m in the UK and it was a dodgy cash in hand job at a chippy with no actual contract, so I didn’t really have any way to fight against it if I had wanted to keep the job anyway.

Even if I had a way to fight against it I was technically too young for the job and my car didn’t have the right insurance to do it because of that so I didn’t want any extra attention. I got through the college year and got decent grades though so it all worked out alright in the end.

    CmdrShepard ,

Pretty sure they’d get rejected for unemployment (at least in my state) as you’re required to have open availability in order to get it.

I had several bosses like that until my favorite boss of all time. We worked retail in a college town and so she expected this. Every semester she would sit us down and have us write out our availability for the new semester, and then she would give us all set schedules. It made everyone’s lives so easy.

Managers like yours are just lazy and can’t plan ahead, it’s such an avoidable problem if you plan just the tiniest bit

“How are you ever gonna keep a job if you can’t keep juice in a cup?!”
