Should I watch Megamind?

I know nothing about it except that memes indicate people like it. I’m usually on board with a DreamWorks or Pixar movie but I’d mentally sorted this one into the ‘not for me’ category along with Minions for some reason (not intending to compare the two).

Is everything the worst?

I’m 43, almost 44, years old and went through a bought of alcoholism during the early part of the pandemic. I went through treatment and have been fine since. However, I can’t help but feel that all the news in the last few months is just the worst. Between the AI bullshit, the wars, the effects of capitalism, and the...

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

I think on a global scale we are all dealing with unresolved trauma from the pandemic, related catastrophes and the general economic roller coaster that we all live in every day. The severity of the pandemic lessened over time but there was no definite point where it ended and we all got to go “Wasn’t that nuts? Is everyone doing okay?” Instead it was just a slow crawl back to business as usual. We feel like we shouldn’t complain because it could be a lot worse but all of the other non-pandemic problems still exist and nothing seems to indicate that things will ever get better.

It’s not just you that feels this way, but that doesn’t mean things are hopeless. There are a lot of people out there fighting tooth and nail to build a better future in spite of all the challenges. Try to find a way to improve the world in your own small way. It really goes a long way to quieting those feelings of helplessness and despair.

For months it was impossible for me to get any Pis at MSRP and then my employer suddenly bought 30 of them to use for signage around the office. That’s when I knew the non-profit hobbyist/enthusiast org was gone.

I’m not worried about it though. In the meantime a lot of other stellar SBCs have emerged on the market.

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

Honestly I still haven’t had a chance to try them out myself so I can’t make a specific recommendation but that market has been exploding recently. I have a sort of nice problem where people keep gifting me their Raspberry Pi’s once they aren’t sure what to do with them so I keep accumulating them without trying.

That being said, the big ones I’ve had my eye on lately are things like the Odroid N2+, the Jetson Nano, the Rock Pi or the Banana Pi. Some of these cater more towards being integrated into projects that need a lot of GPIO, others are focused on just being a low cost low power headless server or thin client.

The SBC market seems healthy enough that by the time I need another SBC I’ll have a lot of options. Biggest loss is just that having one extremely popular hobbyist board made it really easy to find solutions to issues in the community and now there is just a lot more variety out there.

Should I play Noita if it mostly caught my eye because of the cool physics? Hades and Vampire Survivors are the two roguelikes that finally clicked for me.

Toribor ,

I think the mundane perspective and ordinary characters were meant to ground the movie. Most kaiju movies follow elite scientists or squads of soldiers so it’s a bit easier to relate to regular people just bumbling around (and a lot cheaper to film). Found footage stuff seems to be real hit or miss for people though. I definitely understand the desire for more spectacle and a more likeable cast.

Astronauts brains are too big, their soft womanly hands incapable of drilling. Wearing a spacesuit and floating around a bit is trivial. Only some yeehaw boys and one man who ‘tells it like it is’ can save us.

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

I’d been pretty eager to see it. Everyone told me how intense it was, I actually put it off for a little while because I wasn’t sure I was in the mood for something really bleak and existential.

Watching it I was like oh okay this is a movie. Not bad but I wouldn’t call it an intense experience.

Shitting on Inception and Interstellar at the same time?

My right hand curls into a fist instinctively. My left hand covers it and pats it gently.

No… I must choose peace.

Toribor ,

10 Cloverfield Lane is definitely an overall better film. Man I should watch that one again.

Also I just remembered that The Cloverfield Paradox exists which I had completely forgotten about. That one was a total mess which is a bummer because the overall premise is in my wheelhouse and I love me some good space horror. I’ll just watch Event Horizon instead.

The biggest misunderstanding of the Dunning Kruger effect is the idea that it only applies to certain people. It applies to everyone, we all overestimate our expertise at times. It’s a cognitive bias that we all have to knowingly watch out for, not something that indicates stupidity.

You’re right. A real bot trained on 4chan would be too busy arguing about circumcision.

Toribor ,

I’m making another generalization about the dredges of content on 4chan. Go to any 4chan porn board or thread from the last 20 years and eventually it devolves into an argument about circumcision.

About two months into dating my now-wife we came across a street piano. I sat down and started playing which blew her mind. She had no idea that I could play. Somehow it hadn’t come up (I’m pretty out of practice) but she acted like it was a big secret I was keeping or something. It was kind of fun to surprise her even though I didn’t do it on purpose.

The whole gaming industry is in a slump because no one is trapped inside due to Covid restrictions anymore so people aren’t buying/playing games at the same rate they were 2 years ago. Studios are trying to trim the fat as much as possible, regardless of the human cost of restructuring.

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

The newer Ecobee’s can run entirely locally through their homekit integration. I tie mine into home assistant and use it that way. I would never have bought the device if that wasn’t available.

If this old version doesn’t have that available then I’m assuming people purchased it knowing that it was reliant on cloud services. It would be nice if they offered customers options besides just letting the device turn into e-waste but you can understand why they don’t want to burn development hours on a device that’s a decade and a half old.

Just another reason to never buy devices that can’t function without a cloud service.

If you primarily game using Steam then it’s easier than ever on most popular distros. Biggest hassle is likely still GPU drivers. I’ve never had any issues there but depending on what card you have you may be better off with either proprietary or FOSS drivers depending on what your distro of choice likes to provide by default. After that most games tend to just work, a handful may require you to pick a beta version of proton or something.

If you want to try it and don’t want to do a lot of tinkering check out PopOS. It’s probably the friendliest distro for gaming out of the box.

Toribor , (edited )
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

Pop_OS is based on Ubuntu. It’s developed by System76 which sells linux laptops that run their distro by default so it’s very well maintained and polished.

It’s a popular recommendation specifically for people looking out to try gaming on Linux because there are specific features built in like performance improvements for gaming and some gaming-specific packages whereas Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora and OpenSuse are generally designed to be a general purpose distro. Pop_OS delivers packages as flatpacks by default as opposed to Ubuntu’s snaps which are a bit controversial and also uses their Cosmic desktop environment by default (though as far as I know gnome, kde, xfce, etc all still work fine if you have a preference).

Mostly I recommend Pop_OS for people that are new to Linux, don’t know about why they might prefer one distro over another, and want to try it out with the minimal amount of hassle. If you aren’t gaming Pop_OS is still great but that’s one of it’s selling points.

I think you’re on to something actually. Back when Saints Row 3 came out I read an article explaining how it’s childish irreverence toward gender was actually sort of progressive. In character creation there is a boob slider and a dick slider (with insane proportions for both), character voice doesn’t have to match the body type, there are no gender restrictions on clothing, characters are available to romance no matter your gender, etc.

Basically the game was so unrestrained and goofy that it subverted some uncomfortable gaming tropes like boob sliders by just letting players do whatever they wanted and not taking it too seriously.

If you could take a single character out of a piece of media (book, film, TV show, video game, etc) who would it be?

They would lose any magical powers they may have had in the book, but anything they are, rather than can do, will stay. For example people from the His Dark Materials world would keep their daemons. You can take them out at any time in the story’s plot, but for all other people consuming the media, it will be shown that the...

Ideally if there is a launcher it should be optional, preferably something that can be bypassed by passing a flag.

Toribor ,

That would require Congress to act and Congress is barely capable of accomplishing the bare minimum to keep the budget running so the entire world isn’t thrown into chaos. Asking them to do anything that actually protects consumer rights is going to take either an emergency or an extreme electoral shift.

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

Congress believes it’s a national security threat which is probably true but they haven’t bothered explaining this to their constituents at all. Ideally they’d pass comprehensive privacy protection laws to setup standards that both domestic and foreign companies would be subject to. Then companies either adjust their behaviors and meet a certain level of transparency or they would be prosecuted under the law.

But no… We get this instead: a confusing and obviously targeted ultimatum with Congress telling everyone ‘trust me bro this is the only way’.

This is about banning their ability to do business in America, not just trying to ban access to their content on the Internet itself.

Toribor ,

Is this tied to a registry key though? I do all my Windows cleanup and customization from Powershell/Ansible so having a GUI settings option isn’t super useful.

Toribor ,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

This seems to be the case, but congress is doing an awful job of communicating the danger to the public. There will likely be a lot of people angry at Biden when he signs this if there is no effort to justify the targeted action.

I write a lot of scripts that engineers need to run. I used to really try to make things ‘fail soft’ so that even if one piece failed the rest of the script would keep running and let you know which components failed and what action you needed to take to fix the problem.

Eventually I had so many issues with people assuming that any errors that didn’t result in a failure were safe to ignore and crucial manual steps were being missed. I had to start making them ‘fail hard’ and stop completely when a step failed because it was the only way to get people to reliably perform the desired manual step.

Trying to predict and account for other people’s behavior is really tricky, particularly when a high level of precision is required.
