idunnololz , to nostupidquestions in What Android app should I use to browse Lemmy?
@idunnololz@lemmy.world avatar

I’m the developer of Summit. Unfortunately I don’t see anyone mention Summit but I would suggest giving it a try as well.

I think I’ve been a bit slower to implement certain features compared to the other apps, but the app is heavily focused on scalability and performance. Give it a try just in case you might like it. Play store link: Summit for Lemmy

maess ,

Is it open source?

idunnololz ,
@idunnololz@lemmy.world avatar

Unfortunately the app is not open source :(

sambal ,

Is that something you would be open to working towards? Since the growth of Lemmy is attributed to Reddit becoming “closed”, I think many users might see it as a dealbreaker or be less inclined to use a closed-source app.

idunnololz ,
@idunnololz@lemmy.world avatar

My feelings towards this might change in the future. However for the time being, my enjoyment of the project hinges on the project being closed source. Ie. open sourcing the project will likely lead to me stepping away from the project. So even if this significantly impacts the number of users, I would still prefer to keep it closed source. I’d rather have a fun side project I made than to create a popular project that I do not contribute to. It is unfortunate but it is what it is.

valek879 ,

I’m replying on Connect for Lemmy. I just looked at your app and it’s super dope but I’ve got to say the one thing that throws me off is the button for the link is on the far side from my finger. I also like swiping to reply and vote and nonsense like that and your app doesn’t have it.

Take your time however and implement things well and I’ll keep it in mind. My favorite app for Reddit was Relay I think I will be looking for an app until I get something similar or exactly the same.

List mode ftw

SirEDCaLot , to showerthoughts in Oceangate Titan silver lining: new execution method

Fairly expensive, as you’d need a new disposable submarine for each execution.

Most execution is actually pretty barbaric. The multi drug cocktail used for executions in the US is a horrible system that was designed by a non-doctor. The first drug knocks you out, the second drug paralyzes you, and the 3rd drug stops your heart. Problem is if they don’t give you enough of the first drug, you can be awake while your heart is being stopped which is apparently quite painful, but since you’re immobilized you can’t communicate that at all.

The only humane way I am aware of to kill a condemned person would be have them breathe pure nitrogen. Nitrogen is all around us- the air we breathe is 80% nitrogen so the body doesn’t react negatively to it. But without that 20% oxygen, the brain asphyxiates and dies in just a few minutes. The prisoner would simply pass out and not wake up.
This protocol is often used to euthanize laboratory animals as it is considered among the most humane.
It’s pretty fucked up that lab rats get a better death than humans.

Sykasa ,
@Sykasa@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll be honest, i never thought about HOW death sentences are executed, mostly because i live in a country where death sentences are seen as barbaric and are not possible thankfully. But now that i think about it, a “mutli-drug cocktail” sounds like one of the worst ideas, next hanging and guillotine.

Deceptichum ,
@Deceptichum@kbin.social avatar

Being drawn and quartered or golden bulled sounds like one of the worse ideas.

Hanging, rifle line, and the guillotine are slightly better as they’re less violent and more ‘matter of fact’.

A multi-drug cocktail sounds like one of the most humane methods, medicinally and painlessly ending a life. Sadly they’ve fucked up even that by not doing it properly.

GraceGH ,
@GraceGH@kbin.social avatar

The problem is you can't get any actual doctors to help make it medically sound on account of that whole "do no harm" thing they're supposed to uphold, so you end up with quacks that use a functionally random set of drugs that make it appear to the crowd as a painless way to die when in actuality its one of the most brutally painful possible ways to die.

Pseu ,
@Pseu@kbin.social avatar

I'd like a reinforced cell with an explosive charge under my bed. When my execution date comes, the charge is detonated. The explosion is so fast and violent that my brain ceases to be before the pain signal from my nerves even reaches it. I would never even be aware that my date had come.

dystop , to showerthoughts in Oceangate Titan silver lining: new execution method

I mean, if you’re going down that route, you can just tie concrete blocks to someone and shove them into the water. It’s cheap and tested thoroughly by the mafia

PrincipleOfCharity ,
@PrincipleOfCharity@0v0.social avatar

I believe the point of OP’s “thought” Is that death-by-implosion is basically instant (30 milliseconds) so it could be considered more humane than other methods.

query , to showerthoughts in Wouldn't it be nice if instead of just bars with alcohol, there were establishments for people to consume cannabis while eating, playing board games, and socializing?

If they replaced individual bars rather than expanded the space where drug consumption is the basis of socializing.

Cruxifux ,

I don’t smoke weed, but phrasing it’s usage as “drug consumption” always annoyed me. It makes it sound like it’s the same thing as heroin or meth, which it’s not even close to the same thing.

They don’t want content from that website on their instance, and they’re an admin, if not owner of it. Part of the beauty of the fediverse is, you get to run your own place and have your own rules. I can’t really fault him for that.

14th_cylon ,

and they’re an admin, if not owner of it.

there is a difference between doing moderation for the good of the community and being kid on a powertrip. when person asks “which of the new trek is worth watching” and then the mod starts deleting and banning people saying “x is not good, you are better watching y”, just because the mod is fan of “x”, that is not moderating, that is just shameful.

the mod is not owner of the community, it is the community that creates the content. we literally just had reddit-exit because of that.

Australian here. Yes, I regularly drink water from the tap without boiling it.

The only exception is if Sydney Water issue a “Boil water” alert. That usually only happens after really major flooding though.

Another Australian here who drinks water on tap. Some places have bad tasting water but it’s still drinkable. It’s probably only bad because it’s different.

MedicareForSome , to piracy in VPN Recommendations?

Basically 3 good choices

ProtonVPN AirVPN IVPN

Proton has a 50% off student discount bringing the price down to $5 a month for all proton services.

IVPN is probably the best but most expensive.

Where do you see Proton being 50% off for students?
I can’t find anything about that.

MedicareForSome ,

They don’t advertise it, just message support from your .edu email and tell them your username. They’ll apply it and let you use the STUDENT promo code. It’s 50% off the year plan so $5 a month.

ElectricTrombone , to retrogaming in Best handheld for GameBoy catalog?
@ElectricTrombone@lemmy.world avatar

All Gameboy Advances play GB, GBC, and GBA. The best GBA is the SP model AG-101 which has a factory backlight screen. However, there are tons of modifications available for Gameboys out there. I say get a used GBA and go to www.retromodding.com and go to town on it. Customize it the way you want

For ROMs only, the absolute best way to play is to get a Nintendo 3DS or 2DS and install home brew software. And as a bonus you can play the entire DS and 3DS library as well.

FYI the Nintendo DS can play GBA games, but it does not support GB or GBC.

I know you said you wanted handheld, but for anyone else reading my absolute favorite way to play is with a Gamecube and a Gameboy Player! It actually plays all GB, GBC, and GBA games! Gameboy Players can be cheap, but the boot disc is expensive. To get around this there is home brew software for the Gameboy Player that is very good, although I haven’t tried it myself. To use it you need an Action Replay and a cheap SD card to GC memory card adapter. The software will boot the Action Replay first, then boot whatever is on the SD card. (I bet there are ways to load roms too but I haven’t looked). I play with a Raphnet SNES to Gamecube adapter.

Admin OP ,
@Admin@startrek.website avatar

Go into your user settings and set the theme to "mintybubble"

It's completely ugly, but it is full-width. yes, it's in our future plans to have a better theme(s).

Zana ,

Hell yeah, thank you! One more question, are there plans to update to 0.18 so we can use it with Jerboa?

ValueSubtracted ,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

V. 0.18 disables CAPTCHA support, which we're not willing to do at this time, as there are a lot of bots on the platform. It's supposed to be re-instated in 0.18.1, so we're probably going to wait for that.

From what we understand, it should be possible to simply bypass the warning that Jerboa sends, and use the instance as normal - let us know if that's not the case.

Also, the instance can be installed as a PWA through Chrome on Android phones - I've found that to be a good experience overall.

Zana ,

That is a fair reason for not updating, thank you for the explanation :) And unless I am missing something it straight up will not let me log in.

ValueSubtracted ,
@ValueSubtracted@startrek.website avatar

Ah shoot, I just confirmed this. We had tried it with Jerboa, but we were already logged in.

While we consider our options, I would suggest accessing the instance through your web browser. I don't think you'll have any issues doing it that way, and the mobile interface is pretty decent.

I like the app and I’ve used it for over a decade. I absolutely hate the UI. It’s extremely confusing.

I just keep the player widget on my home screen, but everytime I go to search for podcasts or to unsubscribe from one it takes me a few minutes to figure out what to do to get there.

Satiric_Weasel ,

Prior to Podcast Addict I used Spotify for my podcasts. So, for me at least, it’s been a big improvement; though I’ll concede that’s a low bar to clear.

PapyrusOsiris ,

I actually noticed recently that it’s no longer maintained so I’ll have to find another desktop solution.

palitu , to selfhosted in Selfhosting Location History

Unfortunately there are no fantastic options. But it is a three part problem.

  1. Server to collect, store and serve the location data.
  2. App to send the data to the server
  3. ui to visualise the data.

There are some larger collection servers, but nothing that provided the data back in a way that i wanted. I currently use a custom script some created, whic provides a number of API endpoints. I will rustle up the link.

There are a number of apps, I use phonetrack. Defaults to next cloud formants but is easily editable.

The UI is where a lot of this fall down. I have phone always recording location, so tracks is no good for me, I wanted to use something like a heat map. The script I talked about includes a simple heatmap using leaflet and openstreetmaps. This fits my ise case much better, but is still not ideal.

I ultimately want to pre process the data to reduce the size of the data set that gets sent to client, to reduce the lag time. Good luck though, as it is a fun and challenging problem!

(I’ll upload some screenshots when off mobile)

github.com/gue-ni/location_tracker

Rogue1633 OP ,

I agree, the first two problems are rather easy to solve with phonetrack or any other of the tracking apps like µlogger, Owntracks, Traccar, etc. and nextcloud or the backend you provided. What is the reason that the simple heatmap is not ideal? Does it also lag or are you looking for filters functionality, etc.? The data pre processing must be challenging cause thats the part really seperating the self hosted solutions to Google’s one. If one could pre process the data on a nextcloud server and could render it on a map without significant lags, that would be really cool. Maybe I’ll try to work on that in the future when I got more advanced in programming.

palitu ,

Yeah, i think my data set is around 14mb when i load it all (and it loads all points to the browser). that is a bit of a loading lag, but once loaded it is ok.

The other issues is when you zoom out, you cannot pan around. you have to do clever scrolling (zoom) in and out to get to where you want.

I think it should be reasonabley easy to do the server side updates, but i cannot javscript front end to save my life!

palitu ,
Rogue1633 OP ,

That looks nice. If you want to share it, I’d totally try it out!
