wwaxwork , to cooking in What are the best cooking hacks you've learned over the years?

To actually cook things enough. I wasn’t cooking them to unsafe levels before, and please don’t cook my steak above medium rare, but some foods just taste better cooked more. Almost no one cooks ground meats enough, who the hell wants grey beef, get some color on that bitch. Also if you cook sausage meat enough it gains color and the flat renders out a little it tastes better. Get some colour on those roast veggies and no one likes a pale insipid fry. A change in color is flavor, use it to your advantage. And yes sometimes you want your veggies firm and for the love of god don’t overcook your garlic.

marron12 ,

I agree with you on getting color in your food. I think the best way to do that is to cook it at the right temperature (don’t be afraid of heat!) and don’t crowd the pan. And don’t be too stir-happy.

Ground beef, for example. You don’t have to cook it long it you start with a hot pan that’s big enough. Get a pan with a heavy bottom and heat it up empty for a minute or two on medium or medium- high heat. Plop the meat in. It should sizzle. Break it up enough for it to cover the pan, and then don’t stir for a couple minutes. You can stir it when you see some brown forming on the bottom layer.

wwaxwork ,

That was the hardest thing for me to learn to do, to just let the food be and not stir it all the time. Stirring feels like you’re doing “something” lol.

Gee2oo40 ,

Crowding the pan is my most frequent error due to laziness & rushing. I’m learning to do things in batches.

Also, chopping my vegetables in smaller pieces when stir frying.

space_iio , to nostupidquestions in Can I block posts about Reddit?

I actually prefer Reddit tbh

silicon_reverie ,
@silicon_reverie@kbin.social avatar

I do too, but this thread is about ways to filter or block content so I'm not really sure what that has to do with it?

I'd love a way to filter by keyword, which the Reddit Enhancement Suite and some of the 3rd party apps allowed. Maybe the upcoming Sync for Lemmy will port over its filters by domain, user, subreddit, flair, and keyword.

As for Reddit posts invading Lemmy, it seems like most of them are contained to c/reddit and c/RedditMigration, so blocking those two should fix most of OP's issue and that's easy enough to do without any extra tools.

ApollosArrow , to nostupidquestions in Can I block posts about Reddit?
@ApollosArrow@kbin.social avatar

It will die down soon, once the main migration finishes.

Ech ,

Gonna be another spike in the next week, so probably not soon, but it will die down.

ConTheLibrarian , to nostupidquestions in Can I block posts about Reddit?

Engage content that you enjoy and ride this out.

Right now lemmy’s growth is driven by people pre-emptively leaving reddit even though their choses mobile apps still function. We’ll probably see another influx come July.

But for now all we as a seed community can do is engage the other topics we enjoy and build communities that have substance.

Eventually people will join to engage those topics instead of grip reddits demise.

FearTheCron ,

Very good response. To see less complaining about Reddit, make more posts about other things. Lemmy will be what we make it. I have spent two weeks posting into the void with the community I started and I’m finally starting to see engagement. These things take time.

oshitwaddup , to asklemmy in Favorite Sunscreen?

blue lizard sunscreen sticks are my favorite. They’re really lightweight so great for hiking, vegan/not tested on animals, reef safe, they last a long time, since it’s a stick you can’t get goop anywhere accidentally, and they don’t make my skin feel gross at all like most sunscreen does for me. I’ve never felt any burn in my eyes when sweating. They’re kinda expensive but imo worth it

gina OP ,
@gina@lemm.ee avatar

It’s been a while, but I wanted to come back and thank you for this rec, because I really like the blue lizard sunscreen. I got the stick for my face and tube stuff for the rest of my body and I’m really pleased with them. These actually rub in very well and I’m not leaving white streaks on everything I touch.

Glad to hear!

DarthVi , to technology in I need Podcast app recommendations for Android/PC
@DarthVi@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m using PocketCasts and I paid a one-time fee before it became subscription based (but there’s still a free tier), in order to be able to listen to podcast using the web app on PC. Thus I now have lifetime premium access.

I’m very satisfied with their service, I did not find any problems with both the Android app and the web app, moreover it has almost every feature I need, except voice to text conversion in order to be able to share slices of audio in text format (but there are dedicated apps for that).

Lockely ,
@Lockely@pawb.social avatar

💯 this. Pocketcasts is and has been outstanding for the years I’ve had it. Great UI, and will remember your position on a specific episode cross-platform.

Syldon , to news in Moderation / Rules of "news" community?
@Syldon@lemmy.one avatar

One man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure. Don’t over moderate imo.

HeapOfDogs OP ,

What about light weight rules like ‘no politics’. Ie, a post like this (beehaw.org/post/792997) should go to politics?

AnotherPerson ,
@AnotherPerson@beehaw.org avatar

In the United States (at least) the whole point of a free press is to keep politicians in check. You can’t separate the news from politics.

Bozicus ,

I disagree with that definition of news. Keeping politicians accountable is certainly one of the functions of the press, but there are a lot of possible news items that don’t refer to politicians. “Winter storms hit [location]” is news, but not related to politicians unless it talks about steps local politicians are taking to prevent storm damage (which is not necessary for a good article). Or “Physicists find [particle they were looking for].” That one could be in Science rather than here, but it is definitely news, and I personally think it’s hard to shoehorn politics into a discussion of particle physics without losing track of what actually happened. Very few politicians involve themselves in that kind of research (though, to be fair, it might be news if they did).

Whether it’s possible to have a purely apolitical news forum is a different question, and I am sure it’s possible to put a political spin on almost anything if you want, but I just don’t think it’s true that news must be political to be news.

Syldon ,
@Syldon@lemmy.one avatar

No politics is very subjective. Look at the news from Russia in the last few days. That was highly political, and yet very much news everyone had an interest in. Trump’s ongoing indictment is another political game being played, and yet most want to know about it. It is a difficult one to navigate. Me personally I would say politics that has an effect on the people of a nation is news. Inter-party shenanigans is not news for anyone but those who take an avid interest.

ryathal , to gaming in With the next Elderscrolls still being 5-6 years away, what games can you recommend to scratch that itch

Play skyrim with the ordinator mod, it’s basically a different game with huge talent trees and vastly more options for how to play.

SheeEttin ,

I’ve used it. it’s not that different.

notun ,

It’s basically better talent trees, not all that different.

For an actual different experience you need mods like Apocalypse (155 new spells) and most importantly the mod that instakills you if try to play a stealth archer.

may i ask what being a moderator entails to be? Like what tasks, time investment?

Hurts OP ,

Not much at this point, honestly, but the site admins would like me to add moderators, especially from other timezones.

In this instance, in particular, I can say I have had to moderate exactly zero things. Basically, just check the new feed occasionally to make sure everything being posted is relevant to the instance (i.e. pictures, not memes, not politically fueled photos, not shitposts etc.). If a report comes in check it out and clear it, but overall there isn’t too much moderating to do here.

daniskarma , to youshouldknow in YSK how we can bring more users to Lemmy

Yesterday I searched a question and for the first time google linked a Lemmy thread with the answer.

Asking and solving questions will bring users.

How does someone search Google?

DoctorTYVM ,

Using a browser, navigate to the following URL: www.google.com

In the search bar, type the query you would like to make and hit ENTER

Eh, it's still missing a ton of smaller and even medium sized communities. Pick video games and TV shows for example. A bunch don't have a community or only have a dead one with zero or one posts.

Not to mention a lot of native english speakers are garbage at the language too.

idunnololz , to nostupidquestions in What Android app should I use to browse Lemmy?
@idunnololz@lemmy.world avatar

I’m the developer of Summit. Unfortunately I don’t see anyone mention Summit but I would suggest giving it a try as well.

I think I’ve been a bit slower to implement certain features compared to the other apps, but the app is heavily focused on scalability and performance. Give it a try just in case you might like it. Play store link: Summit for Lemmy

maess ,

Is it open source?

idunnololz ,
@idunnololz@lemmy.world avatar

Unfortunately the app is not open source :(

sambal ,

Is that something you would be open to working towards? Since the growth of Lemmy is attributed to Reddit becoming “closed”, I think many users might see it as a dealbreaker or be less inclined to use a closed-source app.

idunnololz ,
@idunnololz@lemmy.world avatar

My feelings towards this might change in the future. However for the time being, my enjoyment of the project hinges on the project being closed source. Ie. open sourcing the project will likely lead to me stepping away from the project. So even if this significantly impacts the number of users, I would still prefer to keep it closed source. I’d rather have a fun side project I made than to create a popular project that I do not contribute to. It is unfortunate but it is what it is.

valek879 ,

I’m replying on Connect for Lemmy. I just looked at your app and it’s super dope but I’ve got to say the one thing that throws me off is the button for the link is on the far side from my finger. I also like swiping to reply and vote and nonsense like that and your app doesn’t have it.

Take your time however and implement things well and I’ll keep it in mind. My favorite app for Reddit was Relay I think I will be looking for an app until I get something similar or exactly the same.
