Morning everyone. It has indeed rained! Had a good heavy shower yesterday evening. Today is a day of housework and food shopping now that it’s a bit cooler. Starting the week in a relatively positive mood - hopefully that continues!

palarith , to nostupidquestions in Why do some people still have hope for Reddit?

I've being feeling that lately reddit had become full of repost bots and fake ads. Was there just because there was nowhere else to go

Emanresu ,

I feel a similar way. The quality just kept going down and down to the point where I couldn’t tell what was real or not. Most just weren’t worth reading either way. Lemmy seems the same way now too. People are focusing on making “content” instead of trying to make higher quality posts.

Although Sarah and Duck is good at any time of day, it’s especially good in the quiet hours.

do you know for sure that nothing is listening on it? Do you scan every device you connect to your network?

jalim ,

This doesn’t really apply if you’re port forwarding to a specific device. In that case you know that you have told your firewall to forward port 80 & 443 (for example) to your web server and you know what ports that has open. I would not be using UPNP on the other hand as that seems dangerous especially in the IOT era.

Felemuso , to nostupidquestions in Why do some people still have hope for Reddit?

I guess because there are a lot of people who just don’t care. Look at Twitter, Musk could do what he wants Twitter still has a big number of users.

Also reddit has a huge and very active community. This is very hard to replace.

briongloid ,
@briongloid@aussie.zone avatar

I disagree with twitter, I wanted to continue using it despite the issues but the tweets and replies I was seeing was such a drop in quality that it naturally phased out of my routine, which I’ve from others in person that felt the same.

Reddit is a sharper change for us, twitter kind of just declined out of being worthwile.

flawedFraction , to android in Monitoring battery current in Android

Not an app, but a device that will monitor power usage, like a kill a watt, is really handy for this sort of thing. You can tell right away if it is in a low power charging mode.

As others have said, the actual problem is probably a dirty port on your phone. The cable will wear out over time as well, so trying a different one may also help.

ProfessionalBoofis ,

You’d probably want something closer to a USB C power meter. A killawatt would measure the overhead from the charger brick rectifying AC to DC. If you happen to have a killawatt on hand it would work fine most likely.

crdz , to workreform in Can we get a three day weekend ffs?

In the US Father’s Day and Juneteenth are the same weekend and some places are doing a 3 day weekend

Kurt OP ,

Juneteenth is a federal holiday, but private employers don’t have to observe it. Mine sure doesn’t. I have never heard of any employer observing Mother’s or Father’s day with a paid holiday.

seeCseas , to workreform in Is this community going to be about organizing and taking action, or just memes and screenshots of tweets?

That’s a good question. If you don’t mind, I’m going to use the “Speak as moderator” button here (although i don’t really know what that does).

I see a few things necessary to reform the current economic system - let’s call it Awareness, Advocacy and Action:

  • Awareness means getting people to realise that the corporate propaganda they’re hearing isn’t the whole truth.
  • Advocacy means going out and telling people to join the cause, form a local union, etc.
  • Action means taking organized action - writing to politicians, organising dialogues and strikes, etc.

I’m completely open to using this community for any and all of the above. When we have a good critical mass of users, we can all vote on this, and I’ll abide by the consensus.

In the meantime, however, we need to get more people to rally behind the cause. We have ~500 subscribers here from all over the world in a variety of jobs. That’s not nearly enough to do any sort of Action. All we can do in the meantime is Awareness and Advocacy. That means posting memes and screenshots, that means posting news that counters corporate propaganda, that means posting news about organised action taking place elsewhere that we can celebrate or contribute to.

If anyone disagrees, please share your opinions here, I’m totally open to suggestions, criticisms, insults even.

dystop ,
@dystop@lemmy.world avatar

I think “speak as mod” adds a red “mod” logo (kinda looks like a shield) next to your username. That’s it, as far as I can tell - it doesn’t pin the post or highlight it or do anything else.

seeCseas ,

ah cool thanks!

TheAmishMan , to youshouldknow in YSK: if you think taking an ambulance to an Emergency Room because you think it'll get you seen sooner. DON'T!
@TheAmishMan@lemmy.world avatar

At the same point though, isn’t that like the ambulance crew acting like a first step of triage? Like it sounds like they’re doing their job, assessing your security and prioritizing those that do need it? I mean if you have a broken arm or feeling not well and called an ambulance, i want to be taking care of the guy that came in coding and needing CPR not focusing on someone who will likely be alive in the next minute, compared to the guy who isn’t breathing

themoonisacheese , to youshouldknow in YSK how to deal with questions about gaps in your employment.
@themoonisacheese@sh.itjust.works avatar

On top of justifying your employment gaps, laying through your fucking teeth is a mighty effective tactic in job interviews in general.

You have the experience they’re looking for. Where did you get it? Toys r us, sears, choose any company that went bankrupt. List your friend (coach them on what to say) as your manager at that place.

You love overtime when it’s necessary. You don’t have anyone at home waiting for you so if there’s work to do you’re happy to get a bigger paycheck instead of being bored all night. It doesn’t matter if it’s true because that guy told you “we don’t ask for overtime often, we work well”. Both of you were lying, it’s fine.

You need a certification from a bullshit company like AWS or Azure (not actually useful certs like forklift mind you, please do stay secure). Don’t fucking pay for it, tell them you had the opportunity to follow the classes but we’re too busy with work to pass the exam! Sure you don’t have the paper to show for it but you know what you’re talking about! And you’re such a great candidate why would you like to them about that?

Lie through your teeth everytime you get the chance, because they’re doing it too. Worse case scenario? They find out and never call you back. Oh no! The thing they were going to do if you didn’t lie!

Rick ,

I do this for every job lol. It always worked out and after they hire you, its much harder to fire you for their petty reasons.

Jo , to nostupidquestions in Why is there such a big thing about prescription opioids when the addiction rate in less than 1% for those who have been prescribed for pain?
@Jo@readit.buzz avatar

Your 1% figure comes from misrepresentation of a 'study', pushed by Purdue and others for criminal gain.

The One-Paragraph Letter From 1980 That Fueled the Opioid Crisis

Purdue Pharma, which makes OxyContin, starting using the letter’s data to say that less than one percent of patients treated with opioids became addicted. Pain specialists routinely cited it in their lectures. Porter and Jick’s letter is not the only study whose findings on opioid addiction became taken out of context, but it was one of the most prominent. Jick recently told the AP, “I’m essentially mortified that that letter to the editor was used as an excuse to do what these drug companies did.”

Don't get me wrong, pain is miserable and treatment needs to be better. But around 80% of opioid addictions start with prescriptions for people in genuine pain. What percentage of prescriptees that is, I don't know. But it's not a trivial issue, and it is a very difficult problem to solve.

SpezCanLigmaBalls OP ,

I have a friend who is in school for being a nurse and she had an exam and one of the questions was about this percentage which is why I brought this up because less than 1% was the correct answer. She told me this figure since she knows I’m on em. Is this school just completely in the wrong then for teaching this to nursing students and I’m sure doctors etc?

athes ,

Honeygain etc… First time I hear about them. Do you mind sharing how much you get?

Im1Random ,

It really depends on the type of IP you have and your location, but it’s really not much for me. From Honeygain I get like 20 bucks every 6 months and when paying out the money around 4$ get lost by transaction fees, but better than nothing and those services use so few resources, you don’t even notice them running in the background.

hadek ,

you might want to check honeygain’s network calls, because I had it running and then suddenly noticed my IP got banned on quite a few websites.

Turns out it was my honeygain traffic that caused it, I quickly uninstalled it after that.

Im1Random ,

Which websites are you referring to? I never noticed any problems from the sites I use. Only when I encounter any kind of captcha I always have to manually select images and it will never solve itself like some did in the past. But not sure if thats due to me not being logged in with Google in my main browser or if it’s caused by Honeygain.
