nightscout , to fediverse in PSA: Mastodon is NOT Twitter and does not aim to be.
@nightscout@lemmy.world avatar

A lot of this has more to do with the mindset people approached Twitter with than the service itself. Honestly, I always approached Twitter the way you describe Mastodon here. I just wanted to find people who had interests similar to mine and connect with them, as well as find interesting news. Maybe that’s why moving from Twitter to Mastodon has been to seamless. Just a lot less anger and hate on Mastodon from what I’ve experienced. A much nicer atmosphere.

inverimus ,

It's how Twitter started. You followed people because they were your friends or had similar interests. It being a platform mainly for celebrities and influencers came later.

nightscout ,
@nightscout@lemmy.world avatar

Yes people forget that. They also forget how people said Twitter was too difficult or “techie” for the average user.

Usually_Lurker , to mildlyinfuriating in Probably a controversial topic, but A.I and how I feel corporate would abuse it
@Usually_Lurker@lemmy.world avatar

I think just clearly stating that this article or creation was derived from AI would be a good start. . It would allow the user/reader to make a better decision on the value of the information being presented.

JayEchoRay OP ,
@JayEchoRay@lemmy.world avatar

I think that would be a good step to provide a good middle ground yes. Allow it to exist and develop its own identity instead of it being meld together and replacing things outright.

So there can be an A.I. genre and provide transparency to help keep it from going too far

Wow. Friday is here and my list of things to do is getting smaller. Just the one thing scheduled in the calendar meeting wise, but when I got in this morning there has been a massive failure at one location that I have to deal with as top priority.

Put everything in place and all of a sudden I'm hit with the sleepies as a result of our coffee beans running out and there not being enough for my normal IV drip of coffee that would last me the day.

On Sunday I've made a plan to do a bunch of snacky cooking while my wife takes the son to the park for a few ours. By the time they're back I'm hoping to have a smorgasboard of delights for us to kill off the evening with a movie. Maybe OG Space Jam? Other suggestions appropriate for a 3-4 year old are welcome.

Noit ,

I’ve a two year old who isn’t really up to whole films yet, but she really vibed with the 2015 Peanuts movie. It’s a series of vignettes as much as a whole story, so her attention span wasn’t too tested and she could do some colouring or whatever and not miss out.

This is it for me. The Pavlovian posting and upvoting of shitty jokes in every. single. thread. I haven’t bothered with reddit’s comment section in years because of it. Here, the comments so far seem chill and appropriate for the posts.

tburkhol , to homeassistant in Debating between Home Assistant OS or Docker for Raspberry Pi 4

I have HA running in docker on a Pi 3 and Z-wave JS running in another on the same Pi. Added a purpleair integration for outdoor air quality, national weather service, some local sensors, and sql to get data from another node. People have made me paranoid about SD card failures, so I regularly image it to my main server. I mostly use HA to visualize environmental data, but it also runs the lights in a hydroponic farm and the house during vacations, via z-wave outlets. Have not tried to integrate it with google or amazon.

The only inconveniences I’ve found with docker is that you can’t restart HA from its web interface and, if you update regularly, old images quickly fill a smaller card, so you have to remember to purge.

notvans ,

It’s now possible to restart HA from the web interface. P

tburkhol ,

I pulled the latest HA version based on you comment in this old thread, and you’re right! There is a restart button now. Thanks.

closure1170 , to gaming in Should I play Dark Souls original or Remaster?

My play order so far as been Elden Ring -> Sekiro -> Bloodborne -> currently playing DS1 remaster.

DS1 is definitely my least favorite so far, although it's not bad. Much much slower, and the challenge is in slogging through the levels with less challenging boss fights than later entries.

@termus@beehaw.org avatar

Zeus , to linux in What's your opinion on Snap/Flatpak, and why?

pretty unpopular opinion i believe, but i loathe them. they feel like installing apps from the windows store, but worse. i use them on steam deck and my laptop, but they often fail to launch with no feedback[^1], won’t accept drag&dropped files, store their dotfiles in weird places, take up much more disc space (and therefore take literally almost 10x as long to download), won’t inherit the theme (i think because plasma stores the gtk theme in a non-standard place), etc. they feel like they’ve been designed to flout what os developers have built up over many decades and are just a struggle to use.

[^1]: on steam deck particularly (so i know it’s not a configuration i’ve screwed up) no flatpaks will launch unless i launch them twice. even after that, there’s a long delay (~1 minute) and then two instances launch. i know this sounds like i should just wait until the first one launches, but that doesn’t work

unwillingsomnambulist ,

The Flatpak theming issue is really annoying, yeah. There’s a rather limited pool of GTK themes to choose from in Flathub, but as long as you’re running one of those themes in your DE (assuming GNOME or other GTK-based), themes will inherit. Can’t speak to KDE as I haven’t used Plasma as primary.

Other than that, Flatpak has been great. I use it reasonably heavily on a laptop that’s slower than a Steam Deck (Ryzen 5 3500u, 8GB DDR4, 1TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus) and haven’t run into performance issues on multiple distros — EndeavourOS, Pop!_OS, LMDE, Fedora, an early version of Vanilla OS, and most recently Debian 12. On my desktop I don’t feel a performance difference between Flatpak and native.

semperverus ,
@semperverus@lemmy.ml avatar

The steam deck uses KDE, so the most popular Linux desktop device is going to be showcasing what flatpak is(n’t) capable of.

This is largely a problem thanks to the GNOME developers though, refusing to play nicely with anyone else and acting like their way is THE way.

lotanis , to technology in Eric Migicovsky is a generous man

It’s more limited because it’s just WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram but Element One does the same thing (and no waitlist): element.io/element-one

I use it and it’s great - it’s “just” a paid service that runs on a Matrix server with the relevant bridges running. This is actually the same technology underneath that Beeper is built on (Beeper uses all the matrix bridges to do its work).

Jaxseven ,

I was looking into setting up Matrix with all the bridges I need (Discord, Telegram, iMessage, SMS) but wasn't quite sure how to proceed. Since I got onto Beeper, the configuration has been pretty simple, and was pleasantly surprised I didn't need my Mac Mini constantly running to get iMessage working.

At the moment, R***** and their API are popular words on Lemmy. If I were tired of reading those two words, we have the technology to have them omitted or censored on our individual screens.

That other people have APIs doesn't matter. There's presently a business who's API is annoying news. The guy would rather block too much rather than not enough.
