The only issue is that it’s read-only and you can’t create an account, post or upvote. But given the shitstorm that is the reddit admin team, i view this as a good thing!

I took a trip out to the Rockies earlier this year, and booked an AirBnB. The listing was for the basement of a house where a lovely old retired couple lived. The basement was decorated and furnished beautifully, and we got to chat with the couple every now and then. They gave us recommendations to a farmer’s market which was pretty cool.

It was the first time I’ve ever booked an Airbnb that was true to its original mission. This is what AirBnb should be - renting out spare rooms - and not a turn-an-apartment-unit-into-a-hotel thing.

You can’t keep slaves anymore, but you can own a company and pay your workers an amount that makes it hard for them to pay for basic necessities so they don’t have time for leisure, or organising unions, or finding other jobs. The workers are free to go, of course, but then they’ll fall into financial ruin and not have healthcare.

Yeah, I mean this might my personal deficiency that other people don’t have… but if I see a comment I disagree with and then I see that it has been upmodded heavily, I get a greatly increased urgency to shit on that comment to make people see how wrong it is. Totally toxic and encouraged by the scoring system.

As with anything, this is intended behavior but perhaps taken too far by some people.

A points system is the best way to get a sense of what other people think, and whether your views are generally accepted. When you’re in a social setting, you can tell from nonverbal clues (e.g. if you start saying something and people frown/inch away, you know they don’t agree). This is valuable.

When you see something upvoted highly that you don’t agree with, OR something downvoted highly that you agree with, it could be one of two scenarios:

A. You’re right, but people generally have misconceptions about the issue.

B. You have a controversial take on the issue.

It’s not always clear which of these it is. That’s why a lot of internet yelling matches devolve into some variation of “downvoted for truth” or “downvote all you want, facts are facts and you’re just blind” - people think it’s B, the person arguing thinks it’s A.

To combat this, you need the following:

1. Reasoning and critical thinking skills are important. At the most basic, learn to distinguish fact from opinion, but also learn to understand an argument.
2. Be humble. Don’t approach it from a “I must win this argument” mentality - try and understand why they’re thinking that way.
3. Pick your battles. Sometimes you just have to disagree and walk away. Nobody is going to give you a prize for making the last comment in an argument.

Of course, it’s easier to just not look at the numbers. But then why not just… not use lemmy/reddit/internet forums? If this isn’t giving you any pleasure, why read/comment at all?

I’m taking it as my detox from social media. Facebook many years ago, Twitter last year, Reddit this year, now YT (although to be fair I still use the subscriptions tab, but it’s made me spend less time on YT).

If you haven’t tried any of the newer Samsung, you should!

I hated the bloat on my S5 (only tolerated it because of the awesome IR blaster on that phone), but the S10 was miles better. There were maybe 2 apps I had to disable, the rest could be uninstalled.

No bloat is still better than some bloat, of course, but Samsung phones are still one of the few with a triple camera setup in a small form factor. That, and the new android quick toggles are so ugly - who thought it was a good idea to hide wifi/data behind a second layer of toggles, and then make each toggle hideously big?!

I sold my Pixel 6 pro to get a Samsung S23. Unfortunately the main issues I had with the pixel were hardware-related and recurring, and while samsung isn’t ideal, most of their issues could be solved with a one-time fix.

Main issues I had with the Pixel:

• Fingerprint sensor doesn’t work with privacy screens. Period. It’s not a question of buying cheap privacy screens, the Pixel fingerprint reader is optical and is just not compatible with privacy screens. Samsung uses an ultrasonic reader which is compatible with privacy screens.
• The 6 Pro was unwieldy and ridiculously large, the smaller 6 doesn’t have the triple camera setup. Samsung is one of the few that doesn’t sacrifice phototaking ability in a smaller form factor.
• That godawful new quick toggles UI is horrible. The quick toggles are ridiculously large, and who decided it would be a good idea to merge the wifi and internet toggles?! I managed to use adb commands to split the toggles in 12, but that broke with 13.

Issues I had with the Samsung:

• Bloat - this was mainly in the form of some preinstalled software, but unlike in the early days of Samsung, I could uninstall most of the bloat easily without resorting to root, adb, etc. No bloat (pixel) is still better than bloat that can be uninstalled (samsung), but this problem was permanently solved after about 10 minutes.
• Some Samsung native apps have horrible permission settings - eg Samsung Pay requires access to your contacts, and if you deny it any one permission, the app just force closes. I got around this by uninstalling the offending apps and using alternatives (e.g. google pay) - again, a one-time issue. fuck the intrusive permissions.

Asking for me to pay for a bunch of stuff, including the cab, would be a red flag. Unless I’ve travelled back in time to the 70’s or I’m living in Saudi Arabia, paying for my date should be a nice thing to do, not an expectation.

There’s a difference between a sapient creature drawing inspiration and a glorified autocomplete using copyrighted text to produce sentences which are only cogent due to substantial reliance upon those copyrighted texts.

But the AI is looking at thousands, if not millions of books, articles, comments, etc. That’s what humans do as well - they draw inspiration from a variety of sources. So is sentience the distinguishing criteria for copyright? Only a being capable of original thought can create original work, and therefore anything not capable of original thought cannot create copyrighted work?

Also, irrelevant here but calling LLMs a glorified autocomplete is like calling jet engines a “glorified horse”. Technically true but you’re trivialising it.

Unpopular opinion, but I love my Samsung phone - upgraded from an S9 to S21 not that long ago. I’m not a brand (or even OS) loyalist by any means, and Samsung has its flaws, but it’s the phone that suits my needs the most.

Firstly, I need a “small-ish” phone for one-handed use during my commute in the subway. Of all the flagships, Samsung’s is one of the few that has the triple-camera setup in a small form factor. Every other major phone maker puts the regular and ultrawide camera in the smaller flagship, and the zoom only comes in the bigger version.

Secondly, I’ve absolutely hated the new Android UI since… 12? The quick toggles are ridiculously big, and it makes me feel like i’m using kids’ mode on my phone. And who thought it was a good idea to put the Wifi/data toggles behind a second layer of menu options? Samsung’s UI fixes this right out of the box without a need for root.

As for the cons… I remember my S4 used to have horrible preinstalled software that came in the root partition and couldn’t be uninstalled. But the newest Samsungs aren’t that bad. It came with a few extra things, almost all of which could be uninstalled easily. Samsung also installs their own version of Calculator, Notes etc - some of them aren’t bad at all, and the only annoying thing about their own utilities are that they force you to update them through Samsung’s own app store. Their camera also tends to oversaturate colors, but it’s a one-time effort to dial down the default saturation in the camera settings.

So yeah, the software has a few issues, but they’re all a one-off fix, whereas my issue with other Android phones (no triple-camera setup in a smaller form factor + horrible quick toggles) are not fixable or require root.

Oh yeah. and Samsung DeX is amazing. I’m surprised Android doesn’t have an equivalent feature. I love it when I can plug my phone into a monitor or TV at a hotel or a friend’s house and play movies/games off my phone.

Does this work consistenyl? I tried that with Pinterest’s login popup and it doen’t work (the element changes every time you enter the site). I ended up adding a filter to remove all Pinterest results from all my searches.
