Monster96 , to asklemmy in What is the craziest story from your life, so far?

The craziest story I have is how close I got to becoming part of a crazy story. It’s odd now that I think about how my life seems to be censored. Back in high school I was part of a group of friends that would go out on the outskirts of my small hometown to play paintball. We’d play almost every weekend and I’d join them everytime. But, one weekend I didn’t join because I think I had a cold or I was working or something. But, that one time I didn’t join someone called the cops claiming that they were hearing gunshots going off. Someone called the cops on a bunch of high school kids and thus the cops showed up sporting shotguns and pistols. My friends had guns pulled on them. Luckily, the cops quickly realized what they were doing and left without any more trouble.

That was the one and only time I’ve almost experienced something even remotely crazy. That was maybe 8 or more years ago.

Bluefruit , to selfhosted in Has anyone used UmbrelOS or CasaOS?

I tried umbrel and wasnt super impressed. It seemed like it would function alright for the small amount of things i was trying to do but broke shortly after installing. I set up pihole and i think jellyfin since i was just testing it out on an older laptop.

I’ve heard decent things about CasaOS but have not used it myself.

alcoholicorn , to memes in In response to all the pro Taliban responses on my other post.

Before the Americans left, the Afghan people lived in terror of the Taliban, Kabul and its warlords, and the Americans.

Today they live in terror of just the Taliban (OK, the Taliban and starvation).

TheOubliette ,

The starvation is due to their country being invaded and bombed for 20 years, their foreign reserves being stolen, and massive sanctions. We are seeing collective punishment visited in the normal civilians of Afghanistan.

The Taliban itself only came to power due to destabilization of the former (incompetent) government by the US. They were described as God-fearing freedom fighters that should be (and were) materially supported. It was only the militant Islamophobia of the post-9/11 US that led to any pretense of caring about the people of Afghanistan - and to use this as an excuse for invading and bombing them. For the record, civilians don’t benefit from getting bombed.

Now we see this filter down into this discourse, where so long as a person can maintain sufficient hate for the Taliban, it isn’t so bad to starve 10-15 million people in Afghanistan. Taliban bad, so widespread deprivation is okay.

The logic in this thread is, and I am not exaggerating, that used by Nazis on their occupied populations and it is why it is a war crime.

jadedwench , (edited ) to asklemmy in My wife has an iPhone. I have a Samsung S23. Why do videos she texts me look like super low res shit?? Can iPhones not text videos?

I think everyone has explained the how and why, but not any real solutions that don’t involve using a completely different application. I don’t have an iPhone in front of me, but with Android you can share as a link to Google Photos instead of sending the picture/video directly. I am pretty sure you can do something similar with iCloud. Have her try the share as iCloud link instead.

Update: I just tested it. I had them open up Photos, go to the image/video, tap the share button, and then if you scroll down a tiny bit there is a share as iCloud link. I was able to view it just fine on my Android phone.

How is that a better solution than using another messenger app?

snooggums , to showerthoughts in I want an AI TV that blocks all forms of advertising.
@snooggums@midwest.social avatar

But I would love a TV that is smart enough to auto hide & mute every kind of ad. Even little logos on the athletes’ uniforms.

So, the best part about this example is that it is well intended but would have so many side effects it would be hilarious to see someone try to make it work. My assumption is that you want it to just have regular uniform colors where the ads are now.

The first assumption is that the team logo and colors aren’t advertising. They are! Yeah, they make bank on tickets, but the real money is in merchandising. Merchandising only works because the people associate it with the team, so team uniforms at their core are ads. They weren’t as much in the past when the majority of income was from tickets and concessions, but they are now. An easier version of this example is auto racing, where the car colors and entire paint job is an advertisement with a bunch of smaller ads plastered all over. Would the AI need to recolor all the cars to avoid color based advertising like bright yellow and black for DeWalt?

That also means that other media that exists to prop up sales in other areas are also ads. A lot of cartoons like Transformers, GI Joe, and My Little Pony existed as advertisements for the toys. The best way this gets convoluted is that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) was originally a comic book, which someone thought would be a great starting point for selling toys and to sell the toys they made a cartoon. But then they stopped selling the toys for a while, so the cartoon reruns weren’t really ads at that point in time the same way they were originally. So does the TMNT cartoon always count as an ad because of the intent at the time it was created, or is it only an ad while the thing it is advertising is being sold?

Then you get into the fake ads in movies for things that don’t exist. Are they ads? What about media where a real world thing is part of the plot, like how the military being in a movie is likely to be intended as an ad for the military?

I’m sure the idea is that the AI would know what the user means by ads, but the viewer will always be surprised when things they don’t realize are ads get blocked and it would have to adapt to each individual viewer. Even more fun when multiple people try to watch something and they aren’t on the same page about ads that impact the ability to watch!

I still love the post, but thinking how it could play out even if it worked is kind of funny.

2024 I finally tried some Bluetooth headphones after maybe 10+ years.

Still using SBC by default, still no duplex HD audio, and still static driver noise at idle.

What is even the point lol. SBC-XQ only solves the first problem which is still inferior to even the cheapest of quality 3.5mm cable.

Even my Nintendo DS sounds better and it’s limited to 32Khz audio lol.

HandMadeArtisanRobot ,

Jeez, were one of the two devices 10 years old? That hasn’t been my experience for a long time (except the duplex audio issue. I can’t believe it’s still terrible.)

Then again, I mostly use BT for the convenience. Being able to do yard work with zero wires is amazing.
