Why update on that little battery life left… the power will return sooner or later, going without updates even for a week or two is no real problem. Hell, I update like once every 3 weeks to a month, it’s not that big of a deal.
Yea as opposed to the windows method of “just open regedit and navigate 8 folders below HKEY_CURRENT_USER to change some ambiguous system variable in hex” lmao
I’ll take editing a text file in /etc/ for my configuration any day
Cable internet tends to stay online even if your power is out. You’d need a battery backup for your modem/router, but it is possible to stay online. Houses can be clever like that, almost all of your utilities will partially work, even when service is interrupted.
That depends on the ISP having backup batteries for their equipment. It will usually only last a couple of hours. 5G will usually stay up for a few days. For longer outages, you will need satellite internet and lots of fuel for your generator.
It first downloads all packages from net, then it proceed totally offline starting by verifying downloaded files, signatures, extracting new packages and finally rebuilding initramfs.
Because arch is replacing the kernel and inittamfs in-place there is a chance that it will not boot if interrupted.
This issue was long resolved on other distro.
One way to mitigate it is by having multiple kernels (like LTS or hardened) that you can always pick in grub if the main one fail.
This issue was solved on Slackware in 1993.
It installs a “huge” kernel that contains all drivers to run on almost any hardware by default, alongside the “generic” kernel with only the modules you need. If the generic kernel fails to boot, you always have the backup, which is known to work, cause it’s the kernel you first boot into after installation.
Edit: Did some reading. “Linux-generic” is just the name of the linux kernel that is used in most computers (as opposed to Linux-realtime, which is the only other Linux kernel that’s still relevant).
Nah, cell towers often have some kind of backup power good for a couple hours or more, at least in the city where I am. I think I once had an outage last 3 days when a tornado wrecked the local transformer station, and still had cell service the entire time.
I don’t think I’ve had a pacman update take longer than 10 minutes before. Sounds like OP was updating all their AUR packages too.
Still absolutely a terrible thing to do on 10% battery life. I bet there’s an AUR package for “check battery level before update” out there somewhere though.
OPs meme is "use distro whose model is ‘give users enough rope to hang themselves’ " and complaining he’s at the gallows
Uh… Why are you calling my sensibilities “snowflake”?
I get that they’re in the same weight class, otherwise they wouldn’t be competing.
No I don’t want “shoulder classes”, what kind of suggestion is that? Do you think I’m making some kind of complaint here? I’m just saying that Red’s shoulders are much stronger than Blue’s. Relax.
Hey, I wanted to apologize. I disagree with what you were saying, but that doesn’t give me an excuse to “straw-man” you to hell and avoid understanding what you’re saying. I misunderstood parts of what you were saying and willingly chose to stay ignorant instead of re-reading
The one on the left has their arm in flexion, making their bicep contract, making it shorter and rise up like that. The one on the right has their arm in extension and therefore the bicep is longer and less exposed. We also know nothing about hydration, and all sorts of other things that would make the perceived size of their muscles different.
TL;DR your argument seemed disingenuous or misinformed. I am guessing that is the reason for down votes.
I don’t actually see an argument anywhere? Just an observation, so the downvote confuse me. Is everyone on a hair trigger because of all that manufactured controversy?
She’s also got tan lines that would make a cyclist proud while blonde needs to get out more.
Fair. It is so easy to misunderstand and assume things in text from, and in English in general.
The person I was replying to “could” have been dog whistling as well. Probably that was the thought in my head. I need to get off the fucking Internet.
I’m not dog whistling. Red looks a lot stronger to me, with clearly bigger muscles, arms in flexion or not.
Red’s opponents have said “I’ve never been hit so hard”, as reported in the media.
There is clearly something going on here. I am saying that.
But what I’m not saying a word of is whether or not I think this person should be able to compete against women. That is not for me to decide. I also actually don’t have an opinion on the matter. That’s the doggone truth. 🤷♂️
You’re not dog whistling, you’re just certain that something fishy is going on when one athlete is bigger and stronger than another. You clearly are trying to imply something, why not just woman-up and say it?
The people whose job it is to decide already did and she qualified. What more is there to do, unless you think they need to look at it again because they got it wrong?
Yes, you totally have no opinion on it whatsoever which is why you vague-posted a “just asking questions” type comment on here.
I’m not trying to imply anything, no. Everything I wanted to express, I already have, in words, in these comments. Nothing to hide.
why not just woman-up and say it?
lol

I’m not saying they got it wrong. This is a very ethically tricky question with a large gray area, considering the large protests and anger sent in both directions.
It’s very difficult to be morally/ethically objective in this matter because we don’t know exactly all the details of what it means, physiologically, to be trans, or non-binary, or whatever else. And especially when someone who might have a chromosome anomaly enters the picture, the gray zone expands. “Fairness” is extremely tricky now because of how we set up the binary-separate competitions of men and women, now that we finally know that gender can be very fluid.
Yes, you totally have no opinion on it whatsoever which is why you vague-posted a “just asking questions” type comment on here.
You are confusing “observation” and “opinion”. I have made an observation, that the boxers facing this person as opponents are themselves reacting to the unusual build and strength of this person, and I am also reacting to and observing the visual difference that I can readily see.
But I have no opinion on whether or not they should be able to compete against women, because I have next to no knowledge whatsoever on trans or non-binary physiology/psychology, or for other such LGBTQ+ people. It wouldn’t make sense to try to form an opinion based on nothing at all.
The only opinions that I have on this is that 1) respect comes above all, and that 2) sports should be played on equal terms. 🤷♂️ Whether or not (2) is achievable in this case, I have no idea. Maybe, maybe not. We probably will never know. At least not in our lifetime.
“just asking questions” type comment
I’m not asking any questions either, because I’m not really actually interested in boxing, nor in trying to actually figure out whether or not this person should be able to compete. That would be a huge undertaking, requiring lots of resources, if it’s even possible at all.
Thank you for joining in the discussion. I hope my stance is clearer now. 🤝
Open source is not the same as source available. I’m not going to do a deep dive on definitions and licensing, but open source generally means that you are allowed to do what you want with it. It also usually implies that if the creator updates it, that updated code will also be shared.
The leaked Cyberpunk 2077 source code is from 2022 at the absolute latest (released 2024 from a hack done in 2022), is not open source licensed for re-use (meaning any use of it by people outside of CDPR is illegal), and they have released numerous patches, updates, and an entire DLC since.
I know that. It’s not entirely true that it’s open-source, since it does not actually have an open-source license, but it’s true to an extent that the source code is technically out there and anyone who doesn’t work for CDPR can (illegally) use it. The comment was only meant as a joke, I wasn’t trying to be real serious about it.
I asked this a while ago which is how I discovered Beyond All Reason which has been my FOSS game of choice as of late.
I’d also recommend Naev and Endless Sky (Both are based on the Escape Velocity Series, Naev is getting a 3D PBR renderer in the next release). Mindustry is good fun, actually purchased this one on steam to support the amazing developer. Extreme Tux Racer is a bit of fun and Super Tux Kart seems to get better with every update (did I mention it can run on the Nintendo Switch via homebrew!)
Edit: I forgot about 0ad and Minetest which I used to play a bit of a while back
Quite the opposite—I’ve only played Armada, not that I have any real strategy to speak of buy I like to set up lots of radar as well as claim the airspace early then once I’ve built the nuke the game is pretty much won. Haven’t tried that on a real player yet though
BAR is great – Total Annihilation was always one of my favorite games from childhood and BAR feels the most like it compared to other spiritual successors like SupCom/FA and other community projects. I actually tried to contribute a couple commits to the project but I don’t think they took them.
I have a Switch, which has hundreds of games and great couch coöp. I can’t speak to most of the other concerns except creativity, and to that I say: Any platform open to indie devs is one that won’t suffer from lack of creativity. You’ll have to deal with Sturgeon’s Law, but that was always true.
I don’t know what this sub’s view on that is, but a hacked switch is especially nice, since usually the latest releases won’t be cracked right away but older ones will be
Part of the value of the Switch is being able to put it in the dock and connect to TV. It’s a lot harder to co-op when you only have the little screen.
Out of curiosity: Which operating system(s) can you shutdown while the kernel is being overwritten? I wouldn’t imagine that as a limitation of Arch Linux specifically.
Yes. I have it set up this way. I forgot it wasn’t the default. For the amount of headache it would solve, I wonder if the Arch team has a specific reason for not keeping a number of previous kernels by default.
I haven’t used Windows since Win7 - Is it possible nowadays to immediately cancel a kernel-level upgrade (say, Win7 to Win8) and have it gracefully stop and then boot into the pre-upgrade environment? If so, then Windows has come a long way. We use to be careful breathing-too-loudly around Windows computers during the upgrade process. Microsoft must be getting better.
I assume NixOs would just let you load a previous working configuration if the current one got corrupted (though in this case it probably could simply rebuild the current one).
In a sense - yes it is good to ‘be like everyone else’. Now before you all downvote, ask yourself what do we consider normal? When becomes a behaviour problematic?
we assume behaviour falls on a bell curve. At the extreme ends is behaviour that’s is considered to be ‘abnormal’ as in not normal and in the in-between is what we consider normal and what most people do. Abnormal does not mean bad or detrimental to one’s health however; it often sparks a negative reaction from others.
In line with this is the ‘insult’ to be extra unique, different or special would be not normal because most people are not at the end of the bell curve.
If we apply this to mental health: you may feel depressed at times. Doesn’t mean anything but the more days you feel that way, the further to the end of the bell curve do you move. At some point you are an outlier and we can safely say: you have a major depression. Now this is simplified but it gets the point across.
In other areas it is better to not be extremely unique, too. Think of school, in my experience being different is not a problem but being extremely different to your peers will have negative impact on you. They might pick on you or outright ignore you. This is not justifying this it is sadly how it often goes.
We don’t have to like it, but it would be stupid to deny it.
I suspect it was ingrained into us a long time ago when survival required us to rely on each other more. If the only butcher in town didn’t like you, you either learn to enjoy being vegetarian, or learn to chop them up yourself.
Every generation has taught their kids how to fit in. “You can’t leave the house wearing that. Don’t slouch. Please and thank you. Go to church. Don’t meow at people. Get a haircut. Go to college. Get a good job. Have more sex. Don’t have sex.”
But, I’m noticing every generation is a little more relaxed than the last, possibly because it’s now very possible to exist without directly interacting with anyone.
Right now, Boomers are pissed that they had to dress properly, be polite, pretend to be straight, hide all emotion, never be wrong but don’t be a nerd, show up early, work late, and force themselves into the mold of the families they saw on TV.
They used bullying to “educate” each other on how to “stay in line”. But now, nobody’s beating up the nerds and the freaks, and the gays. People are more comfortable to be who they are, so they aren’t hiding it. I think this is wonderful! Fear doesn’t have to decide who we are! But they see THE ONE RULE OF SOCIETY breaking apart. YOU MUST FIT IN TO SURVIVE! and if people aren’t fitting in, society can’t survive.
