@Merulox@lemmy.world avatar

I’m a teenage FOSS enthusiast and I’m of the opinion that there are a lot more of us here than you seem to all think.

nbdjd ,

not speaking for OP but when I think about not wanting “kids” around, I mean immature people. I’m looking to be part of something like the reddit prior to them buying Alien Blue.

CoderKat ,

Agree. I suspect that the UX challenge of the Fediverse as well as the fact that you’d largely only migrate here if you’re ideologically displeased with the admins means that people on this site skew more mature.

i_am_hiding ,

The people on here at the moment are the same kind of people that exclusively used old.reddit.com on desktop.

jtablerd ,

Booyah high five! Glad you’re here

theshatterstone54 ,

As a fellow teenager and a FOSS enthusiast, Linux user and Linux tinkerer and hobbyist, I’m glad to see there are more people my age getting into the FOSS space.

Nemethze ,

Same same, it is mostly the matter of your FOSS knowledge, if you were a FOSS nerd you would most likely to switch from reddit in some way or another… (16 btw)

JackGreenEarth ,

Same, also 16, and the ‘mentally kids’ excuse is more insulting than they may have realised.

MECM and rolling reboots? Time how long it takes normally, then use at least 1.5x that time, or as long as you can.

What’s the reason for the ordered reboots? Sounds like you need to review your architecture for better availability.

BEEKAYRANDEE ,

Exactly this. MECM even has this sort of feature built-in with Orchestration Groups. You can set group 1 to perform updates and reboot at a certain time, then group 2 will only begin its update/reboot cycle when group 1 has completed or crossed a certain threshold.

irkli , to nostupidquestions in How are lemmy and other fediverse platforms profitable?
@irkli@lemmy.world avatar

It takes money to run, but it doesn't need money to "be".

Imagine a group of people rent a building to hang out in; of you're a regular you chip in some bucks. Lots of people, a few bucks each, roof over your head.

Get out of that "free" mindset. It was a trap all along. Some of us old pharts have known this, some of us (not me) have been coding stuff like Lemmy and other open software all along.

Right away i knew Lemmy.world was viable; I'm gladly paying 5 bucks/mo! No ads! No corporate extraction of personal data!

Hell, pay TWO bucks a month. Seriously wtf 2 bucks you could lose and not notice.

NutWrench ,
@NutWrench@lemmy.world avatar

Yup. You can be profitable without expecting to get rich. The insane corporate expectations of "20% growth every year forever" directly leads to the enshitification of everything it touches, especially social media.

Rengoku ,

You can pay in Lemmy? New user here. It is confusing enough to understand the concept of federation.

captainjaneway ,
@captainjaneway@lemmy.world avatar

I'm sure popular instances have setup Patreon accounts and the like for donations. Each instance is (essentially) being run by some person. It's just someone who decided it was worthwhile to set it up. They probably started with a small server in the cloud. At the start, it might have been free. But as more people join/interact, it starts to cost money. So the owner of an instance probably looks to the community to keep it running.

It's cheap to run, but it does still scale with the number of uses. So, it's very fair to have a place to ask for donations to keep an instance running without burdening the person who ownsit.

azimir , to books in what book or books have you read that were so good that you didn’t want to put it down?

I scrolled all the down the comments and didn’t see Discworld by Terry Pratchett. Don’t listen to anyone and just start reading it. There’s no right or wrong way to do it.

BendyLemmy ,
@BendyLemmy@lemmy.ml avatar

Maybe the wrong way is to start with Book 1. I’d say try ‘Witches’ first, as I found the first book a bit offputting.

blackconservative , to agora in [Discussion] Should we defederate exploding-heads.com? (Closing arguments)
@blackconservative@sh.itjust.works avatar

I suggest @TheDude @imaqtpie meet up with the exploding-heads admins. I’m sure they will work with you to make any needed changes. They are already calling for such a meeting.

exploding-heads.com/post/162074

Please be mindful that defederation hurts the entire fediverse. If you can workout with the admins I suggest that is a more helpful scenario.

There is currently an attack lemmygrad is carrying out against exploding-heads. Because they are bored or something. Also remember what I said before there are lots of people with multiple accounts here.

Thanks,

Will they actually start enforcing their “No Bigotry Dicrimination” rule? I can’t talk for everyone, but that’s the big one for me.

Edit: corrected the quote after double-checking their rules.

EDIT2: I would accept as proof of their sincerity the purging of all content linked in the OP links calling for the death of LGBTQ+ people.

blackconservative ,
@blackconservative@sh.itjust.works avatar

Please be mindful there are lemmygrad users there purposely posting inflammatory content. This is an opportunity for learning and behavioral changes. I suggest people use it for better communication. Perhaps the offending communities could be blocked and the admins could keep such content to those offending communities.

Kichae , to fediverse in How do I deal with "fractured" communities?

Subscribing to 10 technology communities will likely get you a much, much more vibrant experience than just subbing to r/technology. People actually, you know, discuss things in smaller spaces, rather than just drop drive-by comments that no one will ever read.

HangoverTuesday ,

Or it'll get you a dozen dupes of every submission.

ashley ,

As Lemmy grows, communities on certain servers will die out and some will accumulate all the users. I think the problem will die out eventually.

Though, I think there should be some way to migrate users of a community to a new server. Sounds hard to implement but maybe doable.

SamC , to startrek in Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Strange New Worlds | 2x03 "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"

I enjoyed the episode. I think what makes SNW stand out for me is the characters. All the main crew are interesting, likeable characters, and that for me is generally a key ingredient for great Star Trek.

It has been quite a weird opening to the season. We haven’t had the crew together on the bridge (or even the ship) for 3 whole episodes. I’m guessing there was a real world reason for this (i.e. availability of the cast), but kind of hoping the next episode is a bit more “normal”.

Also, given that Kirk features, it was a missed opportunity to open with “Personal log: We’ve. Travelled. Back in Time…” without further explanation.

StillPaisleyCat ,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

I don’t think we’re going to see in this show any Starfleet officers committing information to personal logs that could threaten history.

SNW seems very conscious that personal logs aren’t entirely personal beyond access.

Una recorded and deleted her personal log acknowledging she is Illyrian in season one.

Later shows in the continuity have revealed to us that some personal logs to become available to next of kin, or are even studied by future Starfleet personnel.

Having Uhura pointedly resist providing the personal logs to La’an in ‘Ad Astra Per Aspera’ also underscored to us that it’s the ethics of communications officers that protect privacy.
