Same here. Even subs (instances? communities? still figuring out the lingo, sorry) are so quiet I’m even posting actual posts. Or on news posts, I have a question about the content where on reddit someone will have already asked and I can just see what responses or vitriol they got.

@ValueSubtracted
IMHO the time travel is more the background for the La'an and Kirk episode.
They rush so through it that it doesn't seem to me the A plot.

triktrek ,

The love interest between them developed to quickly in my opinion. It felt a bit unnatural, especially for La'an who is usually much more in control of her responsibilities and composure.

maegul ,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

On the other hand … it’s Kirk after all, and she was just charmed. Part of it was having her heritage erased which allowed her to open up. Part of it also could have been that it’s just love at first sight for her and she knows it. It was quick, but the speed was consistent with the nature of what was happening.

CaptainProton ,

There is such a thing as love at first sight, besides Kirk is a charmer who treats everyone with respect and he’s a highly accomplished officer. They were also put together in a difficult situation, which is a setting that can bring people close.

FormerGameDev ,

as well as that La’An hasn’t met someone since grade school that had absolutely no idea of her lineage. She’s a little broken in that respect, and it would make sense to me totally that someone would just absolutely fall for someone who not only didn’t treat her differently, but had absolutely no idea whatsoever why anyone would.

wingsfortheirsmiles ,

I agree with you but I think they were trying to get the setup across with her sparring with M’Benga at the beginning, and the doc saying something to the effect of it better not being alone? He’s already established to be a good reader of body language.

But I have to say I did sigh inwardly when the romance angle was hinted at (her looking at Kirk in the night). Would’ve been better to keep it back for something developed over a time. Though I suppose given the end there’s the possibly of a relationship with the Kirk from her reality?

danielfgom , to explainlikeimfive in ELI5: If you're a Christian, why do you have to be good if Jesus will forgive you no matter what?
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

You won’t be forgiven no matter what. If you carry on sinning, there is no more forgiveness. The only thing you can expect is to be thrown into outer darkness forever where you will be mourning and regretting your decision.

Put it this way: you drove drunk and killed someone. You’ve been given the death penalty by the judge. But a person called Jesus steps in and says “I’ll take his place. Let him go free”.

Would you ever drink drive again after someone died in your place to give you a second chance? Surely not! You would be sober, very grateful and even yet to help other people not make the same mistake.

It’s the same with sin. Jesus paid a HEAVY price to redeem you. Don’t spit in his face by carrying on with the same sins. Instead be grateful and find out how you should live instead.

Read the 10 commandments in Exodus 20. And also read the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) to see how Jesus further explains and practices these.

The goal is to become holy like Jesus

Hope that helps.

ARNiM ,

Good ELI5 answer. The “push” to do good comes from the feeling of thankfulness that you don’t have to take a death penalty from a wrongdoing, someone else is taking it instead.

Another take: Imagine when a friend takes you for a dinner treat, you’d be thankful for them that they paid for your food (and the food is not necessarily free, someone actually paid for the food). You’d at least try to be nice to him, as a gesture of thankfulness, and you wouldn’t want hurt their feeling after they took you for a treat. Deliberately or not.

LegoFart , to explainlikeimfive in ELI5: If you're a Christian, why do you have to be good if Jesus will forgive you no matter what?

Romans 6:1 “Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?”

This is typically the best reasoning behind the idea of eternal forgiveness. You can rack up points on your sin bill. But it’s contrary to the overall goal of someone who is following the teachings of Jesus and Paul.

I was raised in a very religious environment. And while it’s taken me many years to rid myself of the scars that caused me emotionally. I still have answers from time to time. And if it helps someone be a better person, I’m happy to share what I know.

Questioning an aspect of a belief structure is important for personal growth. And I hope that some of the comments here help you get what you need.

DmMacniel , to showerthoughts in *****'s API change talk feels similar to the Y2K scare.

The Y2K issue wasn't just a scare though. If the Devs and IT in general didn't had a strategy to overcome that ridiculous windows issue, things could have go bad. Media did media things and pushed it to a world ending scenario though.

Poiar ,

I’m pretty sure that it wasn’t Windows that was the main offender, but instead legacy systems of all kinds made since 1970, where people were not expecting for their programs to run for more than 30 years.

Surprise! Businesses don’t care whether the code is old, as long as it works - so that data type you store the year in only held two characters, and hard-coded the 19 onto it.

1999 would be written as 99. 19 + 99 = 1999 = computers were happy.

2000 would be written as 00. 19 + 00 = 1900 = computers went to shit

ulu_mulu ,
@ulu_mulu@lemmy.world avatar

It wasn't Windows, as someone else already explained, but yeah general media spread misinformation as usual when it comes to technology.

I work in IT and I was there, it was a serious problem that, if not fixed, would have indeed ended up in worldwide disaster, but we knew exactly what it was many years earlier, and exactly how to fix it, and we did so nothing actually happened obviously.

Media spread fear for nothing, instead of accurately reporting the situation and all the hark work IT people were doing all over the world to make sure everything would be fine.

loke ,

In a way, the media hype was not completely bad. It helped ensuring there was budget to fix all those systems.

tentphone ,

Preparedness paradox - if effective action is taken to mitigate a potential disaster, the avoided danger will be perceived as having been much less serious because of the limited damage actually caused.

Very relevant in the context of COVID - “we’re not seeing spikes, why are we still locking down and masking up?!” - and a significant driving factor feeding into those radical anti-COVID-protection “no new normal” ideologies.

what_is_a_name , to fediverse in PSA: Mastodon is NOT Twitter and does not aim to be.

Please take the below as said with the most respect. Especially as I am very empathetic of the struggle of communities finding a space away from hate.

My … concern is:

What you describe is … Reddit / Threadiverse model. Small tight communities focused on openly discussing niche topics. This is why I am on Lemmy.

I use mastodon as “microblogging” - public posting on topics of interest and honestly as an RSS feed since many news orgs’ Twitter feeds are ported over to masto.

But my problem is. If mastodon is a place where we form tight private communities. … and Lemmy is a place where we form tight private communities …, and kbin is a place where we form tight private communities … why do we have all three? What is the difference?

We need fediverse software with clarity of purpose. And the purpose you described … does not fit at all to me with the way things, like replies, seem to work in Mastodon.

Does that make sense?

(And I fully admit I may completely be wrong in this opinion)

cowvin ,

I've been using Mastodon since Twitter was taken over by Musk, so I'm not a super long-term user, but I can give my perspective:

Platforms like kbin / lemmy are more like "topic" communities. Like people on kbin create "magazines" and on lemmy they are actually "communities". From the user perspective, you can just look for these communities you are interested in and sign up to get updates from them.

Platforms like Mastodon are more like you and specific people you like to see content from. So you find people you like to hear from and you follow them to get their updates. They may post on subjects you aren't interested in but oh well, that's up to them.

Both formats can produce desirable, tight-knit communities, but they just use different structure. In my opinion, the kbin / lemmy style is more accessible in terms of finding people interested in a specific subject but feels less personal since you are just all there to talk about a specific subject. On Mastodon, when I find people posting content I like, I end up learning more about the random nonsense they are interested in. Like my feed there has a ton of moose pictures now because one person I followed likes to post pictures of moose. I don't mind seeing them, but I never expected to see so many moose.

TLDR: Mastodon is about following people, kbin / lemmy are about following topics.

yuki2501 OP ,
@yuki2501@lemmy.world avatar

The difference between Lemmy and Mastodon, is that the former is topic centric. There are subreddits and each post is topic specific. Mastodon is people centric. You’re not on Mastodon to see what’s happening around the world or what interests you, you’re on Mastodon to see what your friends are up to. It’s the difference between going to the public plaza and going to an expo.

T0rrent01 , to fediverse in How do I deal with "fractured" communities?

Think these "fractured" distributed communities are the new normal we need to embrace moving forward. It seems like we've been conditioned to think in terms of corporations and monopolies for too long, and maybe, just maybe, a more "splintered" approach could work better.

Why does everything need to fit in one uniform or under one roof? Humanity is diverse, and we have diverse experiences.

Klear ,

It's about ease of use. If there are two very similar communitites both with decent amount of content that interests you, you want to follow both and you don't want to think about which is which. You don't care. You want the content.

Thrasybulus ,

Wanting more diverse experiences and perspectives is exactly why its beneficial having large amounts of people concentrated in one community. People want to be able to interact with a large amount of people, in one place where they can get the benefit of the collective knowledge and experience.

islandofcaucasus ,

This is like saying "why do libraries have categories, we should just all under one roof." I shouldn't have to go to 5 different sections of the library to get self help books

If they really do shut off API access I'll go into partial link aggregator withdrawal. My Lemmy instance still isn't upgraded to the latest versions which are compatible with apps, so I don't browse on my phone.

Isildun ,

Try using the Progressive Web App (PWA) instead. I'm on iOS and haven't found a good app for Lemmy yet but the PWA has helped me get used to Lemmy on my phone in place of Reddit. You just open the site in your phone's native browser (Safari on iOS, probably Chrome on Android?) and choose "Save to Home Screen". Now it looks like any other app and behaves like it too, even though it's secretly just the web page.

anton ,

Give wefwef a try. It’s a third party PWA app already looking very similar to Apollo.

thumbtack ,

hi, do you think you could walk me through how to download something like this or point me in the direction of a guide or something that could? i’ve been using lemmy just on browser but would be interested in something like this, i’ve just never installed anything like it before and don’t quite know what to do :) thanks!

tombuben ,

Open https://wefwef.app in your mobile browser, open the share slid out menu or however that menu is called and click on "add to home screen". That's it.

Helvedeshunden ,

One thing to be aware of is that it should probably be done with the original system browser, so Safari on iOS and Chrome / Samsung Internet on Android. At least I didn't seem to get the option to add to home screen from Firefox on Android, and I'm also not sure every iOS browser will have add to home screen in the share sheet.

SilentStorms ,
@SilentStorms@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

There’s an “Install” button in Firefox in the menu.

Helvedeshunden ,

OK, thanks. Guess I must have overlooked it when I searched for it (because I started in Firefox). I still think it's worth to be aware of in case people use some really specialized browsers with certain limitations.

madjo ,
@madjo@geddit.social avatar

Go to wefwef.app in your browser. Now open the options menu of your browser (the three dots, if on Android, the square with the arrow pointing up, if on iOS) and find the option to put a bookmark on your home screen (in iOS it's called "add to home screen")

This will create a sandboxed version of wefwef.app, tap it and it should load like a normal app. (this is what Apple envisioned as apps way back when, before they realized that they could make money selling apps)

When the page has loaded, in the bottom middle, tap on "lemmy.world", and log in to your Lemmy instance.

Enjoy.

One thing to be aware of. If you have selected more than one language in your Lemmy profile, wefwef fails to post comments because you need to select which language you typed in, and you can't select that (yet?) in wefwef.

thumbtack ,

I still don’t understand how this site works. I sort by Active and get posts from 2 days ago, sort by hot and get posts from last week, and I sort by new to get 10 second old posts.

chagall ,

Your sorting is working properly. When you sort by active, you’ll get posts that people are actively commenting on. When you sort by hot, you’ll get posts that lots of people are looking at, and when you sort by new, well, those are the new posts… so 10 seconds seems about right.

It works the same on Reddit. It’s just that there’s a lot more users, a lot more engagement and a lot more overall content over there.
