ThorrJo , to selfhosted in PHP and security

I have a background (in the distant past) as a PHP dev, and currently make my income doing mostly Wordpress work.

For a very long time I took a jaundiced eye towards big PHP apps for the exact same reasons. That being said, I just two days ago finally installed Nextcloud in my homelab and exposed it to the world.

It’s worth noting that a lot of PHP’s bad rep comes from Wordpress, which is terrible in security terms in large part due to a huge and very poorly vetted ecosystem of plugins written by coders of all skill levels.

PHP itself had a number of anti-features which made security difficult in the past. A lot of those issues have been worked on. As somebody who was up to my eyeballs in PHP for years during the bad old days, I’m now confident installing big PHP apps if I think the dev team and dev process are reasonably mature.

witten OP ,

Good to hear that many of PHP’s “bad old days” issues have been fixed. That lines up with what other commenters here have said. I actually wrote some PHP way back then but not since, and I think that may have unfairly colored my current-day views on the language.

Opacity9850 , to nostupidquestions in What's the proper way to get rid of books?

In our country we have these peddlers who buy papers, books, metal items for cheap and then they resell them to recycle then ultimately or for other uses.

ErwinLottemann , to selfhosted in What backup service do you use?

borg with an external hard drive and borgbase as a remote. I use the 2-2-1 rule (🙈), as I struggle to find a good way to do another backup and RAID does not count 😬

What’s the 2-2-1 rule?

ErwinLottemann ,

32 different copies of the data in 2 different locations is 1 actual backup (it’s actually 3-2-1…)

Put them in Little Free Libraries, post them on your local Buy Nothing group, or sell them

Seems like the only option for something that can be on a multipurpose PC.

Set up your folders, get your devices synced, and it pretty much sorts itself from there.

I've had minor temporary issues with Syncthing, nothing that hasn't been fixed quickly (and have yet to had them happen again).

Great for music and photos between PC and phone and for transfers between music production PC and gaming PC. Better than Dropbox and GDrive for most purposes (lacking support for online link sharing, which isn't very important)

Just crosspost it. The points don’t matter here. The only time I’d hesitate and ask is if it was very clearly OC.

I think even if it's OC, it's fine if you very clearly credit it.

Leave them on the table in a coffee shop, one or two at a time.

rivingtondown , to gaming in I used to be concerned about a game being too short. Now I worry that it will be too long.

I tend to lean the same way, with a kid and busy job I just don’t have enough time to finish long games. Hearing something like FF16 is not 80 hours makes me happy.

That being said, I also lean toward sandbox games as I get older with no definitive ending. Factory builders, city builders, colony management sims, etc… even though those games can last hundreds or even a thousand+ hours. The difference is sandbox style games typically always allow you to quick save or save anywhere, and I never have to worry about finishing some storyline to feel good about my playtime.

ErwinLottemann , to piracy in Risks of using selfhosted wireguard vpn (hetzner) for p2p

Using a VPN to connect to your own server for torrenting does not make sense, because that may not be ‘your’ IP address the traffic originates from, but it is still linked to you as you pay for the server. If you use a VPN from mullvad or something else it cannot (easliy) be tracked back to you directly. (It can, but to the outside there is just a lot of traffic comming from a single source IP, and it is not just your traffic but from a dozen other users. That’s the point of using a VPN provider)
