The term “community” more or less settled, but if you are looking for something more distinct, there is an idea to call ourselves lemmings and the communities /c/liffs that we jump on. Alternatively we could call ourselves lemmons and the communities /c/itrusses.
The plight of the adult gamer with an amount of disposable income. Too many games to play and not enough time.
I get stuck with those problems most of the time I open my Steam library. Too many games that I haven’t started. Too many that I haven’t finished. Yet I still find myself rotating between the same 2 or 3.
I’m not a streamer; I feel that people watching me play would be waaaaay too much stres.
I’m going to have to just reset it, I don’t want to as I have it on at least 5-6 devices. That most likely won’t get the app to work because it is more than likely hashed. Checking password requirements on front end code like that, especially the login prompt is just terrible design.
Technology Connections explaining how TVs, refridgerators, coin operated record players, LaserDisc and any kind of other technological stuff works
Lemmino documentary type videos about all kinds of stuff, not many videos and hasn’t been posting for a while but the backlog is good
Fredrik Knudsen documentary videos mostly about internet culture, also hasn’t posted for a while
Obviously Tom Scott, but also the channels with his friends Matt and Tom (no new videos anymore, but has Citation Needed and Two of these people are lying) and Technical Difficulties
I took over all the cooking about 2.5 years ago. As sad as it seems, I used it to ground me after a heavy coke addiction spanning a few years. And it worked!
Sometimes it does rip my knitting as I’ve 5 weans and the wife to cook for. But I generally love it, and for those times I can’t be arsed there’s always the air fryer and the weans labour to exploit!
I have used aSoundcore Q30, a Soundcore A40 (these are earphones, so not sure if they fit here), Sony XM2 and XM4, and currently I'm using an Astro A50 that I got from work (mostly because of the microphone). The XM4 are the best by far but not very gamey, I wouldn't buy the A50, not think they're worth the price.
On the software side, we already have PeerTube. It’s just the logistics of hosting video are way too expensive for most people to be able to cover:
You need drives to store all those videos, preferably in several quality and codec variants so everyone can watch them.
You need the bandwidth to serve all those videos. PeerTube can “smooth over” the initial new upload bump by using WebTorrents, which is the least worst solution if you quietly ignore all the “but muh IP address” people, but once people stop watching at the same time, you’re back to square one.
Transcoding requires powerful and specialized hardware. Nobody in their right mind will serve videos the same way they’re uploaded, especially with the rise of new codecs like VP9 or god forbid AV1, which you simply can’t encode on a consumer CPU unless you’re fine waiting hours/days for a single upload to go through.
I wouldn’t mind paying a subscription for video if I knew the money actually went to the creators, but YouTube is so anti creator that I don’t want them taking a cut.
Maybe not a cult classic but the highly praised adaptation of Little Women (2019). It did not have the positive flow and feel compared to the 1994 version. Also, having a 22 year old actress playing the young version of Amy was not a good choice, her sitting between the other girls at school looked ridiculous.
Reddit has no intrinsic value. The value comes from the community and mod teams. It was only a matter of time. Reddit found the hill it was willing to die on.
I might offer a slightly different take on this than you tend to see. Yes, it is very common for enjoyment of entertainment to be based on external factors (free time, friends, family). But the modern gaming landscape has changed overall quite a lot. It is entirely possible that the type of games you truly enjoy have gotten lost in the sauce, and just aren’t made as much these days. Likely a combination of the two, but if you’re having the feeling, trust it. That feeling is valid, and claims that everything is the same, you just have external differences feels a bit gas-lighty. Good luck out there~
I quite like your answer and tend to agree. Just wanted to add that while popular games have changed over time, the sheer amount of games that get made these days is insane. I would recommend to see what strange indie stuff is being made, this is something that helped me when I had similar feelings. When not bound by large budgets or investors, really awesome experiences are still possible.
Examples: A Short Hike, Vampire Survivors, Outer Wilds, Undertale, Stardew Valley, Rocket League …
Any imaginable genre is still getting new and interesting stuff IMO, it’s just that mainstream gaming has gotten worse (again, IMO).
But it is true that you shouldn’t simply discard what you’re feeling! I really love that about your answer.
The small indie titles are what is saving my passion for gaming since quite some time now. It’s also what’s saving my wallet as usually they focus on good gameplay more than flashy presentation which helps in not having to spend a ton on a “competitive” hardware.
Apparently lemmy.world will be going down for an attempted server upgrade at 1900 BST, any posts after this time may be lost if @ruud has to roll the update back. If successful, we should see an improvement in performance. 🤞
Edit: back up and seems to be running ok, should settle down soon
